Even if we at First Baptist Church in Newton say that we are above the average, say 50 percent, then that means only HALF of our congregation is actively reading their bibles every single day. When we think about Spiritual Disciplining ourselves for the purpose of godliness, there is no discipline that is of more importance than the consistent intake of Gods Word as revealed through the Bible. Remember, this is not an extensive break down of all of these points, but an introduction that I hope will lead you to more studying on this topic and desire to discipline yourself in your lives. With that said there are three main intakes I would like us to consider: hearing Gods word, reading Gods word, and studying Gods word. Hearing Gods Word-Jesus says in Luke 11:28. Blessed rather are those who hear the Word of God and keep it! Too often we take this seemingly obvious task for granted. Especially during this season of life, we have been reoriented in our understanding for the need to gather together as the people of God and hear the Word of God read and preached. This simple fact that we need to HEAR the Word of God out-loud is the main reason that we saturate our Sunday mornings with so much scripture reading. Be encouraged to gather your families every night and read out-loud Gods very Word. Reading Gods Word-John Blanchard wrote this, Surely we only have to be realistic and honest with ourselves to know how regularly we need to turn to the Bible. How often do we face problems, temptations, and pressure? Every day! Then how often do we need instruction, guidance, and greater encouragement? Every day! With that in mind the best way discipline ourselves to go to Gods word everyday is found in three words: time, plan, and meditate. First, find the time in your day to read a portion of your Bible. Second, find a Bible reading plan that will be conducive with your time. Lastly, meditate on a specific word or phrase from your reading. Walk with that thought in your mind on how it can impact your life for Christ that day. Studying Gods Word-RC Sproul once said this of the Christians neglect to study Gods word, Here then, is the real problem of our negligence. We fail in our duty to study Gods Word not so much because it is difficult to understand, not so much because it is dull and boring, but because it is work. Our problem is not a lack of intelligence or a lack of passion. Our problem is that we are lazy. Those words may seem harsh but when we look at scripture, we see the merit behind the words. Ezra 7:10 says that Ezra set his heart to study the Law of the Lord.If we want to look deeper into the understanding of Scripture and what God has for us, then we must set our hearts to do it.
