Weekly Message from Deacon Rob on the Sunday Readings

SAINT OF THE WEEK: St BLAISE February 3rd Back in the3rd Century in Armenia, a part of the Roman Empire, Blaise was a good bishop who

encouraged both spiritual and physical health for his people. Although freedom of worship was just

granted in the Empire, persecution still raged forcing Saint Blaise to become a hermit. He devoted his

life to prayer, making friends with wild animals. A group of hunters stumbled on him kneeling in

prayer surrounded by wolves, lions and bears. The hunters hauled him off to prison where a mother

came to see him regarding her son who had a fish bone lodged in his throat. At St. Blaise's command,

the child coughed up the bone. He was martyred for not giving up his religion. Today's annual blessing

of our throats is attributed to its intercessor, Saint Blaise.

When Adam and Eve sinned, they

sowed the seeds of chaos and

disorder into God’s creation. At

that point in human history, God

had a plan to restore order through

the ministry of His Son, the

Messiah. As we begin our journey

with Jesus after his baptism, and

travel towards Calvary, God’s

Divine Plan is meticulously

unveiled. Step by step, the Divine

Power of God slowly begins to

confront sin and redirect mankind to the original path

God intended for him to take. On this journey, and

accompanied by a variety of miracles, Jesus begins

this restoration, revealing the intense love and

concern God has for His creation. Today’s Liturgy of

the Word beckons all to be that child of God with

whom He is well pleased.

Today’s first reading from the Book of Nehemiah

reveals a time when the Israelites return from the

Babylonian captivity and are called back to their

covenant with God. Ezra, Nehemiah and the Levites

summon all to hear the law. Assembled and ready to

heed the Law of the Covenant, the people listen

carefully to the Law and are filled with tears when

they realize that it is only the Law that remains of

their former society. The conquering armies had

destroyed everything else; yet, now, they reassemble

and are told to rejoice in the Lord who has brought

them home. Ezra reminds them that they have what is

truly important – the renewed Covenant with the

Lord.

This same concept of order is reflected in the First

Letter of St. Paul to the Corinthians. Paul reinforces

the belief that all Christians are part of one Body –

the Mystical Body of Christ. The Apostle to the

Gentiles proclaims that, through their baptism, all

Christians compose one Body with

Christ as the Head. Using the human

body as a metaphor, Paul celebrates

the variety of roles found in the

Mystical Body. Many Christians are

designated by God to fulfill certain

roles, i.e. apostles, prophets,

teachers, healers, etc... It is through

the Divine Plan and Christ that order

will be restored and sin eradicated.

St. Paul calls all to perform the

function that God has given them in

order that Christ will come to His fullness.

The Liturgy of the Word concludes with a selection

from the Gospel of Luke that reasserts the Power of

the Word to restore creation to its original status.

Today’s Gospel begins with the salutation to

Theophilus (God Lover) stating that it is Luke’s

intention to reaffirm the Divine Message in an

orderly sequence. The Gospel then reveals how the

Spirit empowers Jesus to perform many miracles that

prove he is the Christ. Today’s selection has Christ

rising in the synagogue and declaring that he fulfills

Isaiah’s prophecy. Using Sacred Scripture, Jesus

claims that “the Spirit of the Lord is upon me.” Christ

stands ready to fulfill the Will of the Father.

Holy Mother the Church endeavors to impress upon

us the power of that same Spirit. Today, she reminds

us that we are called to walk with Christ on His

journey to Calvary. Just as the Apostles and disciples

of Christ’s time walked with Jesus and were

witnesses to His restorative and healing power, so

too, are we in today’s world. Our Holy Mother calls

us to utilize those same God-given talents His Spirit

has bestowed upon us to further His restoration and

re-creation of His world. The order that Adam lost

can only be remedied through Christ. It is up to His

Mystical Body to accomplish the Father’s Will.

this week. Once we have approval from the city and from the archdiocese, we

will begin prepping the area for placement.
