Listen to the story: https://drive.google.com/open?id=15yLeF9N47c5LJmLz9- cQAveKphZSLLIZ Today we will continue to study our focus book ‘The Gingerbread Man’. We will be making Gingerbread Men and will practice recalling the instructions we followed to do this. Please watch the video posted by your class teacher on class dojo. First, ask you child to recall some of the ingredients they wrote on their list last week. What do we need to make our Gingerbread Men? Then, bake your Gingerbread Men. Please talk through the instructions with your child and encourage them to repeat the sentences ensuring they know what they are doing at each stage. (You can a photo of them as they follow each instruction – they will sequence these pictures on Tuesday) First, mix it all in a dish. Then, roll it flat. Next, cut the Gingerbread Man. After that, put him in the oven. Last, decorate him. Your class teacher will model the actions your child can use to help them recall each of the instructions in the morning lesson video. After you have baked your Gingerbread Men please download today’s worksheet from the Weebly website and complete the activity. Your child can draw and label how they will decorate their Gingerbread Men. They can then copy this design when decorating their cookies with icing and sprinkles. Make sure you keep 1 Gingerbread Man as we will need this for an experiment on Thursday!

Maths Activity Focus: counting on from a given number.

Today we will be learning about adding and we will continue to add on from a given number. Please watch the video posted by your class teacher on class dojo. First you might like to watch the video about counting to 20, encourage your child to count along and say the numbers they can see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aq4UAss33qA Then, ask your child these questions to support them with their mental maths. What is 1 more than 7? What is 1 more than 12? What is 1 more than 17? What happens when we add? Why does the number get bigger? After that, complete the activity in your home learning pack or download this sheet from our Weebly website. Explain to your child that they need to help the Gingerbread Man to count how many sweets he will have altogether. Put the first number in your head and then count on to find the answer.

Example:

The Gingerbread Man has 7 sweets in his jar. His friend brings 2 more. How many does he have altogether? Put 7 in your head and point to the sweets to count on 2 more “7 à 8 à 9. The Gingerbread Man has 9 sweets altogether.” Write this number in the box.

Literacy Activity Focus: To sequence instructions.

Please let your child watch the video posted by their class teacher on class dojo to support their learning today. First, talk to your child about what ingredients they needed to gather before making their Gingerbread Men. Then ask them to recall the steps they followed. Encourage them to repeat the following sentences using the actions their teacher has demonstrated in the morning video. First, mix it all in a dish. Then, roll it flat. Next, cut the Gingerbread Man. After that, put him in the oven. Last, decorate him. After your child has repeated the instructions a number of times download todays worksheet from the Weebly website. Your child needs to look at the pictures (or use the ones you took of them on Sunday) and sequence them explaining how they made their Gingerbread Men. Challenge: Can they say the instructions independently as they do this?

What happens when we take away? Why do we jump backwards on the number line? What is 1 less than 5? What is 1 less than 14? What is 1 less than 10? You could also ask them to recognise some numbers to 20. After that, download today’s worksheet from the Weebly website for your child to complete. Support your child to count backwards to say how many Gingerbread Men are left after the fox has eaten some of them. Example:

There were 5 Gingerbread Men at the river. The fox ate 2 of them. How many are left? Put 5 in your head and point to the Gingerbread Men to count back 2 time “5 à 4 à 3. There are 3 Gingerbread Man left.” Write this number in the box.

Literacy Activity Focus: talk about differences and change.

We are going to investigate what would happen to him if he fell in the river. Please watch the video your class teacher has posted on dojo to see how we will do this. First, ask your child to make a prediction about what they think will happen to their Gingerbread Man. Explain to them that a prediction is a clever guess. Next, create a river (this can be a bowl of water) and gently place the Gingerbread Man in it. Leave him in the water for 20/30 minutes and then check what has happened. After that, send a video of your child talking about what happened to their teacher on Class Dojo. Optional Extension: If you have more Gingerbread Men in your house your child could experiment what happens to them when they are placed in different liquids such as milk, vinegar and oil. Can they talk about the differences?
