PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Book Week Dress Up Day
Week 6 is „Book Week‟ and to celebrate we
will be having a Book Week costume / dress
up day on Wednesday 21st August. Students
and staff are invited to dress up as any
character of their choice. (even Elvis has
been in lots of books !) Further information
in next week‟s newsletter.
Public Education Week / NAIDOC Day
Last Wednesday we had a wonderful
NAIDOC celebration to coincide with
Public Education Week. The students had a
very enjoyable and educational day. Thanks
very much to Miss Gaiter and Mrs Lindsay
for their organisation and to Mrs Di Darcy
for her efforts on the day. Thank you also to
Mr Jay Horsburgh for picking up the meat at
short notice – the crocodile was certainly the
favourite ! Congratulations to all the
students who got up and spoke as well. Our
school captain Kylie delivered a very
interesting speech on the life of Albert
Namatjira. Thank you to all the parents who
attended on the day. I have other photos
which I will collate and email to student
email addresses and parents on request.
P & C Donation / Excursions
Many staff are currently busy planning
various excursions. Our Secondary students
are going to Melbourne, Year 5/6 to
Canberra, Year 3/4 to Bathurst, and K-2 to
the Dubbo Zoo. Last night the P&C donated
$1800 to be divided among the 4 excursions,
very much appreciated! All of our
excursions are subsidised by fundraising so
that they are more affordable for parents.
Facebook Page
After consultation with staff and the P&C,
Tullamore Central School will soon be
launching a Facebook page. This will be an
excellent tool for the promotion of student
achievement and providing information to
parents and community. A separate note will
go home with further details including
information about security and etiquette.
Parents will have the option of not having
their child‟s image or name posted on the
Facebook page.

Future Politicians?
Congratulations to our debators (and their
support crew !) who had another win against
Bourke yesterday. This debate was held
using Video Conferencing technology and
the students acquitted themselves very well.
Mrs McCosker has more information in her
report. Thanks to Mrs Ros Bell who
adjudicated for us and also thanks to Mrs
McCosker and Mrs Bolam for their work
with our debators.
Positive People
Our PBL focus area this week was „A
positive attitude to learning”. Well done to
Dominic Lopez, Jye Langley, Cam
Horsburgh and Jeremy Mahoney who have
impressed their teachers in this area.
Important Notice re excursion transport
After much investigation it has been decided
that the school will not be leasing or
purchasing a bus. This is purely an
economic decision, while it was affordable;
it would have drained school funds rapidly
taking away money from other priorities.
Just a reminder that any parents who wish to
transport students on excursions must have a
registered vehicle that is comprehensively
insured, and a driver‟s licence. Copies of
these documents need to be held at the
school. This is a Departmental requirement.
Trivial Pursuit
Last week‟s answers were 1. There are more
cats than dogs in Australia. Although there
are about 3.5 million pet dogs and 2.5
million pet cats, there are around 12 million
feral (homeless) cats living in the bush and
in urban areas !! 2. Cats live slightly longer
on average than dogs.
This week‟s question : August 1st is known
as the Horse’s Birthday. Who was this horse
and why was he famous ?
All correct answers will receive a prize.
Federal Election
Just a reminder that Tullamore Central
School‟s front office will be a polling booth
for the Federal election on September 7.

P&C NEWS
Sorry but there was a slight mistake in last
week‟s notices and this Thursday 8th
August will be the last week that the P&C
will be selling tickets for the Joker Draw at
the Tullamore Hotel. The joker draw is an
easy and fun way to raise funds for the P&C
whilst also being able to win meat trays or
fruit and vegie boxes and possibly have the
chance of picking the joker on the board and
winning $2900 this week. Thank you to
those families and teachers who have turned
up and shown support for the P&C and the
joker draw.
The P&C is also trying to collect plastic jars
and containers for a stall at the school fete
next year. All jars that have a screw top or
pop on top would be great. Due to allergies
TERM 3 2013 WEEK 4

though we would prefer if NO peanut butter
jars be donated thank you.
The next P&C meeting will be Monday 2nd
September at 7:00pm in the school library.
Come along and have your say. All
apologies can be forwarded to Mel on 6892
5562 or [email protected]

SUCCESS FOR UPPER PRIMARY
DEBATING TEAM
Lachlan, Jye, Jack and Mikala won their
debate against Bourke on Monday. It was
our first debate held via video conferencing
and we were all unsure as to how well it
would go but all ran smoothly and it was
just like being in the same room.
The team successfully argued „That a book
is better than a movie‟. They put forward
clear, supported arguments and their rebuttal
was well grounded.
Thank you to all the debating team, to
Rhiannon as chairperson and Zoie as
timekeeper and to Mrs Ros Bell who
adjudicated the debate.
A very special thank you to the debater‟s
parents who encouraged and helped prepare
the debates.
Janette McCosker and Vivienne Bolam
Round 3 Debate
Tullamore vs Narromine on Thursday 22nd
August 10:30am in the Library. Tullamore is
the affirmative for “That there should be an
age restriction on YouTube”.
The team is Lachlan Curr, Mikala McLean,
Jack Darcy and Jye Langley.

Year 5/6
Over the next few weeks Year 5/6 will be
researching, writing scripts and filming
news reports on natural disasters. Each
group has selected their natural disaster in
class. It would be great to see students look
up some extra information at home to add to
our class research. This may involve simply
watching a Youtube clip and jotting down a
few points. Any extra information will help
their group!
Students will receive their Term 3
assignment next week (after the show).
Homework
Each week students are expected to:
Complete their LSCWC
Read for at least 20 minutes per night
(registered by parent/guardian)
Write and learn their times tables (8s this
week)
Complete weekly Mathematics Unit (Unit
20).
Thank you to all those people who are up to
date with their excursion payments. Please
remember to make final payments by Friday
Week 8.

SECONDARY NEWS
Welcome to week 4!
There are a few short reminders that follow
in this section for secondary students and
their parents:
2014 Subject Selection
Students in Years 9/10 will be receiving a
subject selection package this week for
courses in the Western Access Program.
This is for students who are entering year 11
in 2014 or they are considering an early
commencement subject while they are in
year 10. Students will have a series of VC
lessons in week 5 that will enable them to
select sessions to attend about subjects that
they may want more information to help
them select their final pattern of study.
2014 Electives
Students in Year 8 will be receiving their
elective selection booklet in week 5. This is
an opportunity for students to choose
subjects that they elect to study for a 2 year
period. These choices enable them to try
subjects that they may wish to study further
as part of a HSC pattern when they enter
stage 6.
2014 Adult Education
In week 6 expressions of interest for adult
education courses for the 2014 Year 11
cohort will be available from the school,
Stanbrook‟s store and also in the newsletter.
The expression of interest form will list the
courses available for study. These forms
will be due back by the last day of term to
enable us to determine which courses will be
running.
Careers Focus – Volunteering Looks Great
on Your Resume!
As part of our careers program students in
Year 9 – 12 will be assisting our show
stewards on Friday 9th
August with the
assembly of the show display. Students will
be walking to and from the Showground
accompanied by Mr Richards.
TERM 3 2013 WEEK 4
Page | 6
They will be leaving school at 8:45am and
returning in time for buses. Students will
require their water bottles, hats and solid
enclosed shoes (Boots or Joggers would be
ideal!). If students could wear their sports
uniform on the day it would be appreciated
as students will be lifting and carrying items
and this would be more comfortable to work
in.
This is a great opportunity to add another
area to your resume and volunteering is
looked on favourably by employers.
Careers Focus – RSA, RSG & Barista
Course
Our Western Access Work placement
Coordinator – Narelle Peters has been in
contact with TAFE for the delivery of RSA
& RCG and a Barista course for interested
community members and students at
Western Access Program schools. If
students and/or community participate in all
three courses the combined cost would be
$420 per person.
Students must be 18 years of age and at the
end of the course they receive their RSA and
RCG which is a legal requirement to work in
any establishment that sells alcohol or has
gambling available. Furthermore the barista
course is an invaluable course for people
interested in working in cafes or restaurants.
If students or community members only
wish to complete their RSA & RCG the cost
will be $300. The Barista course will be
$100.
The delivery of this course will be in Week
6 of this term at Peak Hill. If students or
community members are interested in
participating they need to contact Miss
Shankelton at the school by 14th
August
2013.
Participants will be required to pay for the
course before they participate and provide
their own transport to and from Peak Hill.
Further information will follow in upcoming
newsletters as to the exact dates, times and
venue once numbers are finalised.
Senior Assessments (HSC & Preliminary)
Term 3 Week 3
HSC (Year 12)
HSC Trial Week
In weeks 4 and 5 HSC students will be
completing their HSC Trial Examinations.
Students should begin revising and
clarifying material with their teachers.
They should also download past papers
from the board of studies website to
practice answering questions. This site can
