“Cornerstones,” Week 2: Grace

September 13, 2020

This weekend we begin the second week of our current message series, “Cornerstones.” In this message series, we are going to take five weeks to look at some of the bedrocks of out Catholic Faith, and what they mean for us as a parish. Last week we talked about the importance of Love. St. John tells us that “God is Love.” Love is not just something that God does, but it is what God IS. Since we are made in the image and likeness of God, it is the mission of each of us as members of the Church to love God, to love our neighbors, and to make disciples. Love precedes and comes before growth and success. If our parish is going to be successful and making an impact, it will because we have people who love it to that point. This week we are going to look at another foundation of our Faith, and we are going to do so by looking closely at the parable that Jesus tells in this weekend’s Gospel about the unforgiving servant. The bottom line is that we owed God a debt that we could never repay on our own. We owe God the whole of our lives and all of our devotion because he created us and has given us everything else besides. However, we have fallen short of that devotion creating that debt. God in his mercy and grace has cancelled it. He paid the debt by sending his Son who died on the cross. That’s what forgiveness is. It is simply canceling the debt. God doesn’t say to pay it off the best we can. Instead out of grace and personal loss he cancelled our debt through the death of his son, Jesus. This is grace, the most profound grace that God offers us. We all need grace. Grace is a gift. You can’t buy it, you can’t earn it, and you can’t pay it back. You can only pay it forward. The Church was established to be the primary place where that happens. No other organization has as its mission the paying forward of God’s grace. Unfortunately the Church itself and many church-goers can act with an incredible lack of grace. There are lots of people who stopped going to church, not because of religious or theological reasons, but simply because they experienced a graceless environment. Christians should be the most accepting people because we should remember that God accepted us when we were unacceptable. We want to be a grace filled church. What do we want you to feel? Feeling of gratitude that Jesus has forgiven my debt. What do we want you to know? We forgive others because we have been forgiven by God through Jesus’ work on the cross. What do we want you to do? Receive forgiveness so we can forgive others. Mindfulness about the grace we have received.

54-Day Rosary Novena for Our Nation

Beginning October 15, 2020

Finishing December 7, 2020

As we all know, 2020 has been a difficult year. Of course we are now becoming accustomed to wearing a face mask whenever we go out in public, and social distancing has become a norm. However, the Coronavirus Pandemic has not been the only challenge we have been facing as a nation. Since May, there have been many protests – some, unfortunately violent – pointing out the continued racial inequalities in our country. And on top of it all, there is the partisan back and forth of a Presidential Election.

While many have take the extra time at home as an opportunity for deepening their relationship with God through extra prayer, the various crises we have been facing has also brought to light that our country has become much more secularized, and has lost much of its rootedness in God. That being the case, after a discussion with the deacons, I have decided to pray a 54-Day Rosary Novena for the Sanctification of our Nation.

In 1884, in Naples, Italy, in what as become known as the apparition of Our Lady of Pompeii, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Fortuna Agrelli and some of her relatives. Fortuna has been suffering from a very painful illness for 13 months, and she and her family decided to pray a novena of Rosaries (a Rosary each day for 9 days) asking the Blessed Virgin for her prayers. When the Blessed Mother appeared to Fortuna, she told her to pray three novenas of Rosaries for her request, and then another three novenas of Rosaries in thanksgiving, for a total of 54 days.

In this devotion, the novena is always begun with the Joyful Mysteries, no matter on which day the novena is started. There are meditations for the various mysteries of the Rosary, and depending on whether it is during the first 27 days of petition, or the second 27 days of thanksgiving.

We will begin our 54-Day Rosary Novena on October 15, 2020; the feast of St. Teresa of Avila, and conclude it on December 7, 2020, the eve of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, the Patroness of the United States (and the anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor). Our petition will be the Sanctification of our Nation. We will be praying the Rosary each day after the 9 AM Mass, Monday through Saturday in St. Casimir, and on Sunday in Holy Name. If you can join us in church to pray the Rosary, wonderful, but the prayers/meditations for the 54-Day Rosary will also be posted on the parish website for those who would like to join us from their homes.

I hope that many of you will join us for this powerful devotion.

Fr. J.C.

7 DEADLY SINS AND HOW TO OVERCOME THEM: PRIDE

Our country is facing a crisis of faith. It seems that belief in God is disappearing among many citizens. We are straying away from reliance on the Creator and trying to handle everyday problems and situations on our own—without God’s help. The result is a staggering increase in murders throughout the country especially in cities. As of mid-August, Philadelphia is second to Chicago in homicides this year with an increase of 32% including 3 children murdered per week. As bad as Philadelphia is, 10 other cities have a higher percent increase in homicides with Minneapolis leading the way at 85% followed by Fort Wayne, Indiana at 58%. Chicago had 433 murders as of August 11th, which is a 52% increase from last year. These statistics alone reveal a loss of faith. At the root of this crisis of faith is sin. When looking to overcome sin, one first needs to establish a relationship with God. This is best accomplished by talking and listening to Him, also known as prayer. The deeper, more intimate our relationship becomes the more grace we receive from God that helps us turn from vice and sin. While our efforts alone are insufficient, through God’s mercy He will make up for what we lack when we try to do good and avoid evil. One way is to practice virtue.

The reliance on self and not feeling any connection to, or need for God is a form of pride—an excessively high view of one’s importance. Proverbs 11:2 says, “When pride comes then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom.” In other words, to help counter our pride, which theologians have said is the root of all evil, we must practice humility.

Humility has its origin in the Latin word humilis, which means “low.” Humility is having a modest or low view of one’s importance seeing that the good we do is grace from God. Humility is knowing we are incapable of doing good on our own. Humility recognizes our need for God. Typically, when we recognize this need for God we begin to ask Him for help. We increase our prayer life. Thus, humility is recognizing that on our own we are nothing. We are completely reliant on God. And, we must ask Him for help constantly. So, in order to overcome one of the primary sins our culture, country and world is practicing, pride, we must return to tradition and exercise the virtuous habit of humility. In order to do that, I will share some helpful hints.

HELPFUL HINTS TO PRACTICING HUMILITY Take responsibility for your own actions. Don’t blame others. Don’t be afraid or embarrassed to own your mistakes and apologize when necessary. Humility is slow to judge others but quick to judge yourself.

Give the Glory to God. When someone compliments you, thank God for the gifts he has given you (audible and silent praise and thanksgiving are both powerful).

Praise others. Start to recognize the gifts that God has given others and praise them for using those gifts. Humility builds others up. Pride tears others down in order to build up self.

Be filled with gratitude. Each night before falling asleep, try to remember all the graces and blessings you were given that day and thank God for them. Did someone help you with a project? Did you have food to eat, clothing to wear and a home to go to? Do you have family and friends? Thank God for waking up today.

As Dr. John Gottman says, “Admit when you’re wrong; shut up when you’re right.” The famous poet and writer Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Most of the shadows in life are caused by standing in your own sunshine.” God is a Trinity of Persons – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Trinity is completely unified and in total solidarity. Pride is the opposite. Pride tears others down and puts oneself as a “god.” The answer to pride is God’s grace. We can merit grace by practicing humility. Let’s practice humility. Our country needs it.

Cornerstone Series Summary Week Two – September 13 – Grace and the forgiveness of sins through Christ (Grace) In this week we will look at the parable of the unforgiving servant. A foundation of our church is that we are all in need of God’s mercy. We get to heaven because God paid my debt. We have all received his mercy and love and can do nothing to earn it. We are to extend that that to others. A cornerstone of our faith is that we can all have access to God through the person of Jesus Christ and that no one is too far from him. We want to be a grace filled church. What do we want them to feel? Feeling of gratitude that Jesus has forgiven my debt. What do we want them to know? We forgive others because we have been forgiven by God through Jesus’ work on the cross. What do we want them to do? Receive Forgiveness so we can forgive others. Mindfulness about the grace we have received. THAT MAN IS YOU! You cannot hold a good man down, especially during this Pandemic. That’s right. We are back! That Man

Is You! is continuing our meetings. We invite you to join us as we begin our Fall Semester on Saturday, September 19th. We are a group of Men that have become good friends, your fellow Parishioners that meet at Corpus Christi Parish on Saturday Mornings at 6:30am in Bogdan Hall. Bring your own coffee. FALL IS NOT JUST FOR PUMPKINS! Fall is so much more than pumpkins! It’s a good season to get things done, a season for accomplishments. The cooler weather lets us get more done inside and out. I did a lot of outdoor work this summer, but I always get more done in the Fall. The cooler days and nights also allow us to play and relax a bit more outside. I am hoping that the surrounding towns have neighborhood social distance yard sales that would be fun. So here is my next question for this week, “WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT FALL?” Perhaps its warm sweaters, a good book, a yard sale, football, hot chocolate or picking pine cones. Mine is the colors of the trees, flowers and sunsets. The sunsets in recent days have been colorful to say the least. I take a lot of photos this time of year. Taking a drive and soaking up the colors is great for the soul and gets you out of the house! So let me know “What’s your favorite thing about Fall?” by calling 461-6555 or via email at [email protected]. I will publish answers in next week’s bulletin. Stay healthy! Trish A TASTY FALL TREATS APPLE DONUTS Courtesy of The Kitchen (Food Network) Needed: 3 apples 1/3 cup chocolate-hazelnut spread 1/3 cup peanut butter 1/3 cup strawberry Greek yogurt Toppings: small slices of strawberries, raspberries, sprinkles (jimmies), granola and chocolate chips Special equipment: a biscuit cutter or small melon baller and 2 pastry bags, optional Here’s how: Slice the top and bottom from each apple and discard. Slice the apples into 1/2-inch circles. Use a biscuit cutter or small melon baller to cut a hole in the center of each to make a "donut." Put the chocolate-hazelnut spread and peanut butter in separate pastry bags (or put in separate zip top bags and snip off a corner). Top the apple rings with the chocolate-hazelnut spread, peanut butter or yogurt. (Pipe the chocolate-hazelnut spread or peanut butter, then spread carefully with a knife or offset spatula; spread the yogurt with a spoon.) Garnish each with a variety of the toppings. Makes 9 donuts. APPLE CRISP Courtesy of Alyson Gould Needed: ½ cups & 2 Tbsp. packed brown sugar ½ cups all-purpose flour ¾ tsp. pumpkin pie spice 5 tbsp. butter, cut in bits 2 ½ lbs. baking apples Here’s how: Peel apples and cut into 1/2” wedges. Preheat oven to 475 degrees. Grease an 8” square glass baking dish. Mix ½ cup brown sugar, flour and ½ tsp. pumpkin spice in a bowl. Rub in butter. Toss apples with remaining sugar and spice and put in dish. Crumble flour mixture over top apples. Bake 25 mins. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Good treat for any age!

FALL IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER!

RESURRECTION PARISH

WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE OUR

FALL MEGA 50-50 Since Covid has us still social distancing, we feel that we really can’t run a safe Fall Festival and Polish Kitchen. We would never want to put our parishioners or our volunteers at risk. So we are just going to have a FALL

MEGA 50-50. This 50-50 will be split between 3 winners, First 35%, Second 10% and Third 5%. The drawing will be held on November 1, on All Saints Day.

We will be mailing you a letter, two books of chances ($20) and a census card by the end of September. Please return your chances and the census card in a plain envelope, marked MEGA

50-50. Return them the same way you would your collection envelopes, either mail, secure mailbox at office or the collection basket at the weekend Masses. FALL MEGA 50-50 – By having the drawing on November 1, we hope the jackpot climbs so that the winners will see a nice amount for Christmas shopping, household projects or just to catch up on some bills. We will keep the jackpot amount in the bulletin each week on our website. Good luck to all! CENSUS CARD – At the beginning of the pandemic we realized that we did not have a way to reach our parishioners. A Facebook page was created and updates were posted on our website resurrection2.org. We need a better way to reach you in an emergency. With an email address we can send an email that would reach all our parishioners. If you don’t have an email address, that’s okay. Give us the email address of a family member or friend (with permission), someone that would alert you to an emergency email from your parish. Another way of reaching you is FLOCKNOTE, go to our website towards the bottom and sign up, very easy. You will then receive email updates from us. The census card will also be used for any updates to your address or phone numbers. Please send your card back in an envelope to protect your privacy. All census information is kept confidential by the parish office. SPREAD THE NEWS…Please spread the word about our FALL MEGA 50-50! Tell your family, friends, neighbors and co-workers, more chances are available at the parish office. If you would like to take some chance to work with you, please pick some up. Once again thank you in advance for your generosity.
