Controlled Atmospheres (CA) involves:

•Reduced oxygenReduced oxygen

• Increasing carbon dioxideIncreasing carbon dioxide

•Adding carbon monoxideAdding carbon monoxide

•Removing carbon dioxide, Removing carbon dioxide, ethylene and other volatilesethylene and other volatiles

Conclusions

• Decay incidence was reduced and Decay incidence was reduced and delayed by the CA treatment in the three delayed by the CA treatment in the three tested cultivars.tested cultivars.

• In ‘Kadota’, a yellow skin cultivar, CA In ‘Kadota’, a yellow skin cultivar, CA reduced the “off color” incidence thus, reduced the “off color” incidence thus, increasing the percentage of sound fruit.increasing the percentage of sound fruit.

• As a next step, commercial and practical As a next step, commercial and practical application of CA-packaging in the fresh application of CA-packaging in the fresh fig industry should be attempted. fig industry should be attempted.
