Biology of Fishes/Spring 2010 Aquarium Activity/Week 10

A. Introduction

Last week, we began looking at the final superorder of fishes, the Acanthopterygii, the spined fin fishes, considered to be the most derived. We started with the more ancestral series, the Atherinomorpha. This week, we look at the most derived series, the Percomorpha.

B Systematics

The Series Percomorpha includes approximately 12,000 species classified in 230 families – about half of all fishes. The series contains 10 orders. We will look at the first 3 orders thought to be the most ancestral. NEAq Fishes Location Infradivision Euteleostei
