# Quotation Rules Example
1 A direct quotation is enclosed
in quotation marks.
An indirect quotation is not.
“When I learn to ride,” he
said, “I’ll wear a helmet.”
The boy said he’d wear knee
pads too.
2 Use a comma after short
introductory expressions that
precede direct quotations.
My sister warned, “If you
borrow my coat, you’ll be
responsible for it.”
3 Use punctuation (comma, ? or !)
after a direct quotation
followed by a concluding
expression.
“If you sign the contract
today, you’ll have to pay rent
starting today,” the landlord
warned.
Wednesday 10/25/17
# Quotation Rules Example
4 Interrupted quotes need commas
(inside the quotation mark), and
again after the interruption, but do
not need caps on the second part
of the quote.
“If you sign today,” he
repeated, “you’ll pay
today.” (The “you’ll . . .”
is lower case!)
5 Place punctuation inside the final
quotation mark.
Betty pondered, “How
could I fail the test?”
6 Capitalize the first word in the
quotation.
Betty pondered, “How
could I fail the test?”

# Quotation Rules Example
7 If the end mark goes with
the entire sentence, not the
quotation, put it outside of
the quotation marks.
Don’t you dare say “I
disagree”!
8 Use single quotation marks
to set off a quote within a
quote. (Notice the CAPS!)
“The lawyer said,
‘Great news!’ and I
was happy for the
first time today,”
Alicia explained.
