Successful six times at the top level, the dual Oaks winner was last seen beating the colts in the G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown in September and was being coaxed back for a return to action by Ed Dunlop when the setback occurred. AIt is with much sadness that a decision was made this morning to retire Snow Fairy,@ the conditioner said in a statement. AUnfortunately after a routine piece of fast work today she was found to have re-injured her near-fore tendon, which has caused her problems in the last two years. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Mrs. Patino for all she has done, she has been the most wonderful owner of a truly amazing horse. Most owners would have retired her a lot sooner than she did, and if this had been the case, she would not have won the Irish Champion last year, which was without doubt her greatest performance. I would also like to thank all of my staff who have looked after her, ridden her and travelled her around the world.@ In total, the 6-year-old amassed nearly ,4 million in prize money throughout four seasons of racing, which saw her complete the English and Irish Oaks double and go on to annex the G1 Hong Kong Cup in her sophomore year and the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Commemorative Cup in 2010 and 2011. Sidelined off her second Kyoto victory by injury, she added Deauville=s G1 Prix Jean Romanet to her tally last August only to be stripped of that contest when testing positive for a prohibited substance. On her last start, she beat Nathaniel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the Leopardstown feature and was being prepared for the Hong Kong International meeting when suffering further tendon problems. AShe remains the only international horse to have won two Group 1s in Japan,@ Dunlop continued. Snow Fairy will return to Ireland, where I hope she will have a fantastic life as a broodmare.@ Cont. p3 BC RELEASES BOARD ELECTION RESULTS The Breeders= Cup announced election results for five positions to its Board of Directors, including newly elected members Bill Oppenheim (Journalist), J. David Richardson (Chief of Surgery, University of Louisville, M.D.) and Elliott Walden (WinStar Farm). Both Oppenheim and Richardson, along with Roy Jackson (Lael Stables), who was reelected to the Board, will all serve four-year terms. Barry Weisbord (Thoroughbred Daily News, Trakus) was also re-elected, and will serve a three-year term, fulfilling the expiring term of Oliver Tait. These individuals were elected by the 48 Breeders= Cup members whose voting concluded at the annual meeting Tuesday. Jerry Crawford and Walden finished in a tie for the final position in the election, which is a one-year term to fill the expiring term of David Willmot. A runoff election by the members was scheduled to take place between July 22-26 to break the tie. Following the meeting, Crawford and Walden agreed to draw lots and that the person losing the drawing would withdraw from the runoff election in order to avoid the cost and inconvenience of the runoff. Walden won the draw and will serve a one-year term. In addition to the five newly elected/reelected members, the Board consists of Helen Alexander, Middlebrook Farm; Antony Beck, Gainesway Farm; William S. The geldinggalloped out six panels in 1:12.84 before rounding outseven furlongs in 1:27.08. AThe horse worked verygood,@ Rodriguez told Daily Racing Form. AHe=s trainingvery good over here. He had a very good work atAqueduct too. Let=s keep out fingers crossed.@ Vyjack won his first four career starts, including theJan. 5 GII Jerome S. followed by the Mar. 2 GIII Gotham S., both contested at the Big A. Novellist on Course for Ascot... Dr. Christoph Berglar=s Novellist (Ire) (Monsun {Ger})is being prepared for a tilt at the G1 King George VI &Queen Elizabeth S. at Ascot July 27, connectionsconfirmed yesterday. Last seen winning the June 23G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud, the 4-year-old was thesubject of a positive bulletin from trainer AndreasWohler yesterday. AHe came out of Saint-Cloud reallywell and is in good form,@ he said. AWe have alwaysbelieved in the horse, and he is proving it now. He hasto improve a bit further to win at Ascot, but he willhead there in great shape. We have used a pacemakerfor Novellist in the past, because he needs a stronglyrun race, but he won=t have one at Ascot because wethink that there will be a good pace. There=s no rainforecast ahead of next week, and faster ground wouldbe a slight concern for Novellist, but he is a very nicemover and should be fine on good-to-firm going. Wewould be happy to have Ryan Moore on board again, and it looks like he will be available. The King George isthe summer Arc and a very important race in theworldwide calendar. The statistics would say that it isnot possible, but it would be a dream to have back-to-back German winners of the contest.@ Danedream (Ger)(Lomitas {GB}) scored a thrilling nose victory fromNathaniel (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in last year=s renewal.

Pletcher Preps for Summer Stakes... Trainer Todd Pletcher offers a pair of contenders inSaturday=s GI Coaching Club American Oaks atSaratoga in the form of GI Kentucky Oaks heroinePrincess of Sylmar (Majestic Warrior) and GII FairGround Oaks winner Unlimited Budget (Street Sense). Princess of Sylmar, who worked four furlongs at theSpa in :48.54 July 14, proved she was a force to bereckoned with when she pulled off a huge upset in theOaks, winning at odds of 38-1. AWe weren=t surprised she was ableto pull off the win,@ Pletcher said. AIthink, at the time, everyone consideredit to be one of the strongest KentuckyOaks we=ve seen in a long time and Ithink with another strong performance, she can certainly validate herself asone of the leading 3-year-old fillies forsure. She's doing really well and I lovethe way she has been training.@ Unlimited Budget heads intoSaturday=s race off of a sixth-placefinish against the boys in the GI Belmont S. June 8. AWe decided to take a calculated risk[running in the Belmont] and not thatshe ran poorly, but a mile and half maybe beyond her strength,@ Pletcher said. AWe are cuttingback to 1 1/8 miles, which suits her well. Her recordprior to that was outstanding and, like I said, she didntrun poorly in the Belmont either.@ John Velazquez will be aboard Unlimited Budget forthe CCA Oaks and Javier Castellano gets the call onPrincess of Sylmar.

Jockey Mike Smith, who accompanied Princess ofSylmar for her Oaks score, will be riding Royal Delta(Empire Maker) in the GI Delaware H. that afternoon. Pletcher, also potent with his juvenile fillies, will besending out at least one, possibly two, impressivedebut winning young ladies in Friday=s GIII SchuylervilleS. on the Spa=s opening day card. Known for his

success with 2-year-olds at Saratoga,Pletcher is looking for his fifth win inthis renewal. Yes It=s Liz (Yes It=s True), who wonher five furlong unveiling in :57.99 atBelmont July 3, is one of the possibleStonestreet entries. Yes It=s Liz would berunning on just 16 days rest if she goesto the gate in the Schuylerville. AShe=s very fast,@ Pletcher said. AShe=sa precocious kind of filly. We expectedthat type of performance from her. Shehas good gate speed. She came out ofthat race really well and that=s why wethought about running her back.@ The other possible entry is Stonestreethomebred Elena Strikes (Smart Strike), who

was an impressive debut winner at Monmouth June 22. AI think she=ll appreciate the added distance whereshe can break and not have to be rushed,@ explainedPletcher. AShe=s a filly who has shown a lot of quality. She has been training really well up here and she has agood mind. She has been doing well since that maidenrace.@ cont. p6

Pletcher has plenty of impressive colts gearing up forgraded stakes both at Saratoga and elsewhere. GI Belmont S. hero Palace Malice (Curlin) worked fivefurlongs at Saratoga in 1:00.32 over the weekend inpreparation for the July 27 GII Jim Dandy S. APalace Malice breezed on Sunday and he is doingsuper,@ Pletcher said. AHe has moved forward since theBelmont and is doing really well. We are excited to runhim in the Jim Dandy.@

GI Wood Memorial victor Verrazano (More ThanReady) breezed five furlongs in 1:01.67 at Saratoga onMonday in preparation for Monmouth=s July 28 GIHaskell Invitational. Pletcher was happy with the work,as well as, the colt=s victory in Monmouth=s GIII Pegasus S. June 16 in preparation for the Haskell. Pletcher=s turf stars Charming Kitten (Kitten=s Joy)and Jack Milton (War Front), who ran second and third, respectively, in the GII Virginia Derby July 13, are beingprepared for their next outings. AI haven=t really had a chance to talk to Mr. [Ken]Ramsey [owner of Charming Kitten] about what theplan is,@ Pletcher said. AI would say the possibilities arethe [GII National Racing] Hall of Fame [S.] or the [GI] Secretariat [S.]. I have had a chance to speak toGary Barber and we are pointing Jack Milton to theSecretariat.A

MCBURNEY BARN ENJOYING BIG RETURNSFROM SMALLER INVESTMENTS by J.M. Severni It=s been difficult to ignore the success of the PatMcBurney barn through the first half of the Monmouth

Park meet. Thestable, a combinedeffort betweenMcBurney and JohnForbes, for whomMcBurney was along-time assistantbefore taking over thedaily operations in2007, has tallied 12trips to the Oceanportwinner=s circle and ishitting at a 39% clipwith over 80% in themoney. The barnmight be best knownfor their previoussuccess with GIIKing=s Bishop S.winner Tale of the

Cat (Storm Cat) and multiple graded stakes winner GetSerious (City Zip), both yearling purchases. Tale of theCat fetched $375,000 at Keeneland September in 1995and Get Serious was a $130,000 buy as a Fasig-TiptonOctober yearling in 2005. However, in recent years, theoperation has targeted less-expensive yearlings withhigher ceilings. Those smaller investments havecertainly paid off.

Two weekends ago, McBurney racked up three winswith 3-year-olds purchased at yearling sales runningunder the colors of the BDL Stable, Peter Donnely andPhantom HouseFarm. Lucky RagDoll (Silver Train),a $19,000 FasigOctober purchaseout of the Deheremare Here ComesChelsie, romped by6 1/4 lengths inher third start lastFriday (video). Cont. from p7

A savvy approach to yearling sales has become thekey to recent success in the McBurney stable. AWe goto yearling sales now because the two-year-olds intraining sales have gotten too expensive and you get awhole lot more pedigree as a yearling,@ McBurney said

of his team=s newpurchasing process.AObviously, you don=tknow what you=regetting,@ he added ofthe downside. Included on the salesselection team is TerryGabriel, manager ofPelican StateThoroughbreds outsideFolsom, Louisiana, whobreaks the yearlingsbefore they make it to

McBurney=s barn. AIt=s a combination of John, myselfand Terry,@ McBurney noted of the sales draftingprocess. AWe go to the sales with [trainer] Steve Brownand we all work together.@ The team has been able to identify individualsoffering the best value at a certain price point usingpedigree analysis and conformation inspection. AJohn Forbes with Steve Brown have developed apedigree number,@ McBurney explained. AJohn has evenexpanded to another number, which gives the greatestchance to buy a stakes horse with a pedigree we canafford. At the sales we first look at conformation. Afterthey get by me and Terry, we will divide up the list ofpossible purchases. If a horse gets past one of us, thenall three of us go back and look at the horse again. Some get crossed off at that point. Anybody thatmakes it through to that point goes to the veterinarians. If they=ve already scoped the horse and it hasn=tpassed, then they=ll tell us. If they haven=t doneanything, they=ll look at the x-rays and do a scope.@ Like any good investment endeavor, McBurney,Forbes and Co. also try to remain diversified. AWe try todivide it up between colts and fillies,@ the trainer noted.AEveryone is heavier towards the colts, but we=velearned that fillies can sell pretty good, too. A lot of thetime, we might throw a horse out if we think it has toomuch of a turf pedigree. It almost seemed like for acouple of years the numbers were leaning towards turfhorses.@ The BDL stablehas been anintegral part ofMcBurney=simpressivewinning skein. Thepartnership iscomprised of threelongtime friendsfrom New Jersey--Bob Jones, DennisLynch and LeeCarr.

AI've know both Dennis and Lee for well over 20years,@ said Bob Jones. AWe worked in New Yorktogether. Dennis ran his own investment managementfirm, Lee Carr was head of equity trading for MorganStanley and I was head of the sales force for EquitableLife. So, that's how we came up with BDL--Bob,Dennis and Lee. AThe three of us were involved with trotters and thentwo of my partners bought a piece of [2007Coronado=s Quest S. winner] Cable Boy [Jump Start],@Jones said of the beginning of the BDL=s involvementwith Thoroughbred racing. AI spent the year with themmeeting with John Forbes and Pat McBurney and gotto know them very well. So, at the end of that year, the three of us formed BDL Stables.@ The partnership has had other success before thismost recent hot streak, notably with Mary=s Follies(More Than Ready). Purchased for $40,000 as a

yearling atKeenelandSeptember in2007, she madefive starts--winningtwo of them andhitting the board inevery attempt--before beingpurchased by PaulPompa, Jr. for$500,000. cont. p9

The bay would go on to win the GIII Boiling SpringsS. at Monmouth and GII Mrs. Revere S. at ChurchillDowns in 2009. Currently, the BDL partnership has five 2-year-oldsand six 3-year-olds--among them the promisingsophomore Bob and the Gang (Mizzen Mast). The half

to multiple gradedstakes winner JustJenda (Menifee) waspurchased for $40,000at KeenelandSeptember and hasposted two sharp front-running scores in hislast three tries. Theonly 4-year-old in theirarsenal is Dr. Goldfarb(Orientate), a $25,000Fasig-Tipton Midlantic

buy. The bay has steadily improved throughout hiscareer and has two wins at the meet--an impressiveallowance score May 26 (video) and a victory in ahandicap on Sunday (video). AThe BDL plan is that the 2-year-old year is a gimmebecause you never know,@ McBurney said. AHopefully, everyone makes it to the races in their 3-year-old year,so they can be evaluated. If they=re not allowance orstakes horses, they=re either sold or raced aggressivelyto be claimed to make room for the 2-year-olds comingup and, hopefully, we have enough to go back to theyearling sale again.@ The barn hopes its buying strategy has loaded thepipeline for the upcoming years as well. AWe have aJump Start colt [out of Green Jeans {Green Dancer}who fetched $35,000 at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall]who, right at this moment, is doing very well,@McBurney said when asked about the promising 2-year-olds in the barn. AAnd an Exchange Rate filly [out ofTwo Punch mare Winning Punch, who was purchasedfor $40,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall sale]. ANorthern Afleet filly, [the first foal out of This Cat CanDance {Vindication} went for $50,000 at Fasig-TiptonFall] was the most expensive from last year. She=s agorgeous little filly. And we have a little Stroll colt [outof Miss Barbara {Miner=s Mark} purchased for $19,000also at that sale] who acts like he=s okay, too.@ As for the stable=s current success, the conditionerattributes it to a solid stock and a little help from thecondition book. AWe did go to Gulfstream this winter and the horsesthat came out of there all seemed to be running well,@commented McBurney. AThe competition down there isvery tough. Also, the condition book had worked thefirst three or four weeks. Every race we entered wentand that was a little different from the previous year.@ Of the partnership=s commitment to New Jerseyracing, Jones said, AWe really enjoy Thoroughbredracing and we enjoy it at Monmouth. I have four kidswho live within 10 minutes of the park and they've allbecome involved.

In fact, my youngest daughter is now invested withLee Carr and myself in some horses. It's really been afamily affair--the same thing with Lee and Dennis. Wewant to have good horses and have fun, and this year'sbeen fun because we've been winning and everythinghas been going very, very well.@ And if the McBurney and Forbes= buying strategykeeps working, there could be more fun to be had inthe future.

Dear Editor, I thank God we had another strong sale yesterday asit helps everyone in the food chain top to bottom. As Iwatch sale after sale over the years I wanted to give ashout-out to Terence Collier the auctioneer atFasig-Tipton. This man is truly a master of the mic. Hemakes for lively action and great entertainment. If heisn't the best in the business I don't know who is.Michael BronzinoPalm Meadow Farms

$20-MILLION DAY It had been since 2009, when their July sale was atwo-day yearling event, that Fasig-Tipton grossed over$20-million at the yearling sales season opener. There

were a lot of smiling facesaround the Fasig pavilionMonday night; they sold just163 yearlings, which was14% fewer than in 2012,but the gross of$14,635,000 was just 5%below last year=s, theaverage of $89,785 was up10% and the median of$72,000 was up animpressive 20%. It was astrong sale from start tofinish. But the other reasonFasig officials were smilingwas the $5,819,000grossed by 55 horses ofracing age, topped by a$1-million filly, GI Princess Rooney H.heroine Starship Truffles(Ghostzapper) and an$800,000 colt, the3-year-old Eastwood

(Speightstown). Taken together, the two Mondaysessions grossed $20,454,000; no doubt, we=ll beseeing more of these racehorse sales. I don=t think you can really call something a >bull=market until the averages can be sustained withgrowing rather than shrinking numbers, but all thesame, it was a strong yearling market, featuring plentyof demand for the supply. Nine stallions with three ormore catalogued averaged over $100,000, withWinStar stallions capturing the title for overall leader byaverage--Bellamy Road, from his last Paul=s Mill seasonbefore moving to WinStar, had three sell, for anaverage of $191,667--and leading first-year sire byaverage, the 2010 GI Kentucky Derby winner, SuperSaver (Maria=s Mon), who had three sell for an averageof $178,333. WinStar also had the number two sire onaverage, the promising freshman sire Pioneerof the Nile(Empire Maker), whose two sold averaged $180,000. Afourth WinStar sire to average six figures was Harlan=sHoliday, who had the distinction of having eightcatalogued, eight through the ring, and eight sold, foran average of $105,375. Other established sires toaverage over $100,000 were: Spendthrift=s MalibuMoon (four sold, average $135,000); Hill >n= Dale=s hotsecond-crop sire Midnight Lute (Real Quiet; threeaveraged $126,667); and Three Chimneys= ExchangeRate (three sold, average $113,333). Besides Super Saver, two other first-year siresregistered six-figure averages: Darley=s Desert Party(Street Cry), who was transferred from Kentucky toSequel Stallions in New York this year, averaged$125,200 with five sold, including the yearlingsales-topping $460,000 filly; and Spendthrift=sWarrior=s Reward (Medaglia d=Oro), who had six sell foran average of $103,333. Darby Dan=s Tale of Ekati(Tale of the Cat) averaged $93,333 with three sold;Darley=s Midshipman (Unbridled=s Song), winner of the2008 GI Breeders= Cup Juvenile, had two average$87,500, marginally ahead of Airdrie=sMajesticperfection (Harlan=s Holiday), whose five soldaveraged $83,600. Other first-year sires which hadthree or more catalogued included: Spendthrift=s Line ofDavid (Lion Heart, 4/$73,000); WinStar=s Hold Me Back(Giant=s Causeway, 3/$64,000); Lane=s End=s DiscreetlyMine (Mineshaft, 5/$63,000); Ashford=s Munnings(Speightstown, 4/$62,750); former WinStar (nowJapanese) stallion Summer Bird (Birdstone, 3/$39,000);and Lane=s End=s Quality Road (Elusive Quality,2/$37,000). Top F2006 (first foals 2006) sires Tapit (2 sold, average $275,000) and Speightstown (2/$162,500),who stand at Gainesway and WinStar, respectively, were among four other sires with two sold whichaveraged over $100,000. The other two were: Airdrie=sFlashy Bull (2/$125,000); and Ashford=s Tale of the Cat(2/$103,500). One very striking aspect of Monday=s sales was thecontinuing prominence of new, American-basedoperations at the top of the charts. Whisper Hill Farm(Mandy Pope), Regis Farms (Nat Rea), Conquest Stable(Ernie Semersky and Dory Newell), and WoundedWarrior Stable (Chris McEwen) are all relatively new tothe business, and that alone is cause for optimism thatNorth American racing, in spite of our many andwell-documented problems, still has a future as ahigh-end sector of the entertainment business. Withnew investment also, particularly in Europe, from Qatariand other Middle Eastern and Asian and SouthernHemisphere interests, the outlook for the 2013 yearlingsale season looks reasonably bright. A rising tide lifts allboats.

CLARIFICATION: A quote from Castleton Lyons=sGabriel Duignan regarding the purchase of StarshipTruffles (Ghostzapper) on page one of Tuesday=s TDNshould have read that trainer Marty Wolfson loved thefilly. We regret any confusion.

“Prices were strong at Fasig-Tipton’s market-opening July yearling sale on Monday, with the average up 10% to just a tick under $90,000, and the median up an impressive 20%, to $72,000, with the gross down 5% even though 22% fewer were catalogued and 14% fewer sold. Fasig topped up their day’s takings to over $20-million with the addition of the new Horses of Racing Age sale, following the yearling sale, in which 55 horses averaged $105,800 with top prices of $1-million and $800,000. A good day all round for the Fasig team.” – Bill Oppenheim

DUTROW FAILS IN RENEWED ATTEMPT TO HAVESUSPENSION OVERTURNED Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. suffered a setbackTuesday in an attempt to overturn a 10-year suspensionimposed by New York State regulators. Judge Edward O. Spain of the New York SupremeCourt, Appellate Division refused to sign a show causeorder that could allow Dutrow=s case to be re-opened tointroduce new evidence. Dutrow, 54, was handed the suspension by the NewYork State Racing and Wagering Board in October2011, but was able to continue training until heexhausted his legal options in January 2013. The dutiesof the Racing and Wagering Board were absorbed bythe New York State Gaming Commission in February. AMr. Dutrow=s suspension remains in effect and thereis no reason to expect it to change,@ said Lee Park, spokesman for the Gaming Commission. Dutrow, who won the 2008 Kentucky Derby andPreakness with Big Brown, has a long history of finesand suspensions for major and minor violations of therules. In 2011, he appealed a 90-day suspension fromNew York regulators for two separate incidents inNovember, 2010, the discovery of syringes in his officeat Aqueduct Racetrack and a post-race positive atAqueduct. In his report following a three-day hearing in May2011 the hearing officer recommended that Dutrow=slicense be permanently revoked and that he be fined$50,000 because his Aconduct at racetracks in NewYork State and elsewhere has been improper, obnoxious, unbecoming, and detrimental to the bestinterests of racing.@ The three-person Racing and Wagering Board decidedto impose a 10-year suspension.
