KFPS NEWS: No 3 Wednesday 19th February
2020
Welcome to week 4 of the term and what a wonderful week it has been so far.
Neighbourhood newsletters
In the last few days your child/ren should have brought home their ‘neighbourhood’ newsletter outlining what
is happening in their classrooms and neighbourhood for this term. Information about what makes a good
student, a good teacher, an effective classroom were all brainstormed by classes and highlighted in the news-
letter. The Neighbourhood newsletter also informed families of what the current focus is in Literacy, Numeracy
and Science within that neighbourhood as well as informing you of your child’s personal learning goals.
Student Leadership
We have announced a number of our student leadership positions for the school year and we are currently
advertising our school council election process for any parents wishing to take up a 2 year position on our
School Council. I would also like to remind our wider school community that our Parent & Friends Club meet on
the first Monday of the month at 2:30pm – this is another great way for you to be involved in school life. The
Parent Club AGM will be held on Monday 2nd March at 1:30pm. All community members welcome.
It is important for students to experience leadership opportunities during their schooling, to learn the art of
building relationships within teams, achieving tasks effectively and it also provides an opportunity to learn to
identify and display effective communication and interpersonal skills.
At Kangaroo Flat Primary School, we believe all members of our school community should be capable of
exercising leadership in different contexts. The more leadership is encouraged, the more it flourishes. Students
at our school have the opportunity to experience leadership through formal and informal leadership positions;
by striving to uphold our school values of Respect, Responsibility, Teamwork and Being Your Best; and through
the opportunities to achieve success with friends and peers in the classroom, in the yard and through repre-
senting our school on the various sporting teams offered or choir performances.
Some of our 2020 student leadership roles have been announced for this year. I know that each of these
students will be fine leaders in our school community.
School Captains:
Congratulations to Josh Hooley and Lara Priest who have been vot-
ed in by their peers to be our school captains for semester one and
to Jarrell Ratcliffe and Mia Goulter-Clarke who were voted in as our
semester two captains. These students have already demonstrated
leadership qualities and I commend the students from Grades 3-6
for their maturity during the voting process. I look forward to work-
ing with these students over the coming months as they build upon
their leadership skills.
House Captains
The process for the selection of House captains was also finalised last week with nominated students speaking
at House meetings in front of their grade 3-6 peers. There were 2 captains selected for each House –Marong,
Lockwood, Olympic, and Calder. Our House captains will be an important leadership component during the
Athletics Carnivals coming up in March as well as running the House competition at school each term.
Congratulations to the following House captains.
Calder House Jarrell Ratcliffe and
Lara Priest
Lockwood House Paw K Pru Htoo
and Seth Ahearn
Marong House Kaidyn Higgins and

Olympic House Blake Bellis and Ber

Assembly : Friday mornings at 9am in the Gym: It was a joy to welcome the
Room 7 Foundation students last Friday. They all showed such bravery and
confidence as they stood up in front of the whole school and received their
certificate. This Friday morning we will be welcoming our Room 8 Founda-
tion students into our school community. All parents/carers welcome to
attend.
Assembly Team 2020: Our Assembly Team is a very much sought after role within our school. They work each
week to write the script, practise public speaking skills and to set up and pack up the assembly each Friday. The
Assembly team members need to be dedicated to the job, hard- working and above all be able to work collab-
oratively as a team. We shall be announcing the 2020 Assembly Team members at this week’s assembly and
awarding each of them with a badge and certificate. Of course our school captains will also be a part of the As-
sembly Team and support both Mrs Martin and myself in our award presentations to students each week.
Choir Leaders: Choir auditions have been finalised and I wish thank those students who have been keen to
participate in Choir. I am sure we will have a fine choir who will have fun as they learn! Thank you to Mrs Del-
low for her work in this area. Our 2020 Choir Leaders will also be announced at this week’s Assembly.
School Council Elections
Our call for nominations for the 2020-2022 School Council term is once again included in
today’s newsletter. Nominations close next Friday 28th February. A nomination form can be
collected from the office or alternatively downloaded from our website
(https://www.kangarooflatps.vic.edu.au) for your use. Each year we have a group of retiring
councillors and the opportunity for new members to join. We also have a strong commitment from members
who like to commit to more than one 2 year cycle. An election will be held if nominations exceed vacancies.

This week @KFPS …………..
Occupational Health & Safety Week
Week 4 of each term is Occupational Health & Safety week at KFPS. It is a great reminder for staff to check
processes and complete documentation around our OH&S commitments. As part of our OH&S requirements
we organise an evacuation or lockdown drill each term. The purpose of conducting a drill at school is so that
everyone in the building is aware of how to exit the building in the quickest, easiest and safest way possible if a
fire, or other emergency did occur and will help staff and students familiarize with the sound of the alarm as
well as the instructions being given by the teacher in charge.
Lockdown Drill – coming up.
Within the next week we will conduct a Lockdown Drill whereby students and staff are expected to remain in
their classroom and secure it in a lockdown procedure. Staff will follow the lockdown processes to communicate
to the office when everyone is accounted for in their area.
This may be the first time that our Foundation students have experienced a drill. Your child may wish to discuss
with you exactly what happens during a drill. If you have any questions about our emergency procedures,
please do not hesitate to contact me.
Next term we will practise an evacuation – leaving our classrooms to assemble at a
particular site on our premises. Thought of the week: A perfect message
for our student leaders to take note of.
Kind Regards,
Kim Saddlier,
Principal
Student Safety: NB: We have noticed that there are some families who are driving into our school grounds to drop students off in the mornings and to collect them at the end of the day, especially when it is wet. I would like to remind you that parents, families and friends can only drive into the school grounds when: -your child is sick or injured and needs to go home or seek medical treatment. These are safety concerns for our students, staff and our families, especially our younger siblings when cars are entering and exiting the school.
Students and families need to enter and exit the school via the school gates. We have three gates:
One near the gym in Freeman Drive One near the school crossing in Olympic Parade One at the back of the school
Please do not use the front office as a walk way unless you need to speak to the office staff. Your co-operation is appreciated.
Parent and Volunteers form
Our school is very grateful to our parents, guardians and grandparents who support us in a variety of ways throughout the school year. We value our home-school partnership with our school community and ask that you consider volunteering at our school during 2020. Whether you have a little time or a bit more time on your hands, we certainly value your input. Please Note: that all volunteers need to hold a Working with Children’s Check (WWCC). This is free for volunteers and can be applied for online at www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au or at a Post Office.

SCHOOL PARKING
The illegal parking of vehicles adjacent to our school poses a safety concern to children, pedestrians and oth-er road users. Parents are reminded that it is essential
to comply with parking restrictions when dropping off and collecting children from school. Motorists must not stop in no stopping areas, even briefly, with or without the motor running. They must not stop next to a continuous yellow edge line, on nature strips, too close to school crossings, park over driveways or double park. A number of schools have short term time restricted areas, such as 2 minute pick up drop off. These parking areas are in place to allow for ease of access close to schools and these restrictions must be adhered to. Drivers should also be aware that they cannot perform a U-turn over an unbroken or continuous dividing line. With regard to children’s crossings, the law requires that a driver approaching a children’s crossing must drive at a speed at which the driver can, if necessary stop safely before the crossing. Please slow down and take extra care when driving in school zones. City of Greater Bendigo Parking Officers and Bendigo Police do conduct random patrols throughout the school year at various locations to ensure that motorists are adhering to the Road Rules.
Kangaroo Flat FNC are looking for some Under 11 girls or boys (Grade 4 or 5) keen to play netball this year at Kangaroo Flat FNC. Games will be at Golden City Saturday mornings starting in April. Please contact Bridget Chambers on 0407 509 744 for further details. Alternatively, you can discuss with Travis Colley at school.
Immunisation Certificates/Birth Certificates
I am seeking your co-operation in ensuring we have a record of your child’s immunisation status and birth certificate on file. This will ensure the school can respond quickly should a member of the school community contract a vaccine preventable disease. In the event of a disease outbreak children without an Immunisation Certificate will be sent home until the risk of infection has passed. If you haven’t supplied the school with a copy of either certificate please do so as soon as possible. You can get a copy of your child’s immunisation History Statement: Through Medicare online accounts or the Express Plus Medicare mobile app. By visiting a local Medicare service centre We appreciate your support.
