The Pacific Theatre, unlike Europe and Africa, depended on engaging the Japanese on countlessIslands in the west Pacific.
Island Hopping capture lightly-defended islandsthroughout the Pacific, one by one, until they hadHOPPED their way towards Japan. The Pacific Ocean was so BIG the U.S. needed a way to
get closer
This would get the U.S. within striking distance of Japan, allowing it to set up bomber bases in close proximity to thecountry.

Why do you think the United States won the war?
Logistics plays a crucial role in the Pacific. Island Hopping to seize advanced (primarily air) bases and
cut Japanese control and influence
Japanese have qualitative edge in military hardwareat the beginning of war. Choose quality over quantity (Zero, Yamato).
Unable to replace assets quickly.
US is master of mass production. Average quality, tremendous quantity.
Implement ideas from captured equipment.
US subs operate independently and sink Japaneseships faster than Japan can produce them.
