What was the Spanish-American War? The Spanish-American War was a conflict that was

fought in 1898 over the island of Cuba. The war itself was 113 days long; low in causalities on the

American side.

Controlled by the Empire of Spain, Cuba wanted

independence and rebelled in 1895. US split:

Businessmen supported Spain (because it protected their economic interests)

Others wanted “Cuba Libre!”

Atrocities in Cuba were the focus of “Yellow Journalism.” Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst were in a duel for circulation, each attempting to outdo the other with headlines and hair- raising images and stories.

When a Hearst reporter in Cuba asked to come home because little was going on in Cuba, Hearst replied "Please remain. You furnish the pictures and I'll furnish the war."

The exaggerated accounts of events in Cuba that were printed in their papers began to influence the American public.
