Course Design. There will be Quiz assignments and Homework assignments submitted through Canvas. There will be Memo

Assignments submitted through Canvas uploaded as a PDF. Throughout the course there will be in class exams. There will be a project at the end of the course. In addition to lectures, learning resources are available to the student to aid in understanding the material and working the assignments which include online videos found at the website [MDHarper.com], textbook required readings, the Red Book as a reference, and student discussions on Canvas.

The Quiz assignment for a topic will be made available after the material is covered in class. The Quiz is designed to cover basic material supported by the learning resources which include online videos found at the website [MDHarper.com]. When the Quiz is available, the learning resources including the online videos should be fully utilized and the Quiz questions should be worked before the next class period. After the Quiz is available and before the Quiz is due, questions about the material upon which the Quiz questions are based will be addressed at the beginning of a class period only after the Quiz questions have been worked by students before coming to class. Questions will be on the material and not the answers to the questions.

The Homework assignment for a topic will be made available after the material is covered in class. The Homework is designed to apply a problem-solving approach to operations problems. The learning resources which include online videos found at the website [MDHarper.com] are designed to support knowledge of the material but the in-class lectures and discussions are designed to support a problem-solving approach to work the specific operations problems addressed in the homework. After the Homework is available, questions about the material upon which the Homework is based will be addressed only after the Homework questions have been worked by students before coming to class. Questions will be on understanding the material or applying a problem-solving approach and not the answers to the questions.

The Memo assignment for a topic will be made available at appropriate times during the course. The Memo assignment is designed to communicate results from a worked operations problem to an outside client requesting the work and to an internal party documenting the approach taken in obtaining the results. After the Memo assignment is available, questions about the material upon which the Memo assignment is based will be addressed only after the Memo assignment has been worked by students before coming to class. Questions will be on communicating results as an external response or an internal support document and not a specific answer to the assignment.

Course Objectives. This course will survey concepts, methods, and strategies commonly used in the management of operations. Recognition of problems, application of techniques, and communication of results are emphasized through lectures, assignments, and exams. The approach to the material in this course will include the progressive objectives of a basic understanding of the underlying concepts of operations, a proficiency in the application of tools to operations problems, an ability to formulate, evaluate, and critique operational strategies, and an exposure to a selection of operations environments. This course should provide a student the capability to independently acquire a workable solution to commonly encountered operations problems or to be an effective leader or contributor in a team effort dealing with operations issues.

Course Structure. This course contains lectures, reading material, online videos, quizzes, homework, memo assignments, exams,

and a project. Course grade is based solely on student’s performance in the grade measures of quiz assignments, homework assignments, memo assignments, exams, and project. Grades are not negotiated. No curves. No extra credit. In calculating course grades, normal rounding conventions are used.

The rounding convention used in this course: a number, X, with a value 1.5≤X<2.5 is rounded to 2.0 if rounding to the unit digit. This rounding convention will be used for calculations in this course and especially related to grades, assignments and exams.

Assignments consist of quiz assignments, homework assignments, memo assignments, and a project. All assignments submitted through Canvas. No late assignments are accepted. Answers to assignments posted on Canvas after the due date. Exams given in class and returned after graded. Assignments and exam grades posted on Canvas. Course grade will not be posted on Canvas but reported to the registrar.

In taking this course, each student is responsible to know and adhere to the policies and procedures in the syllabus.

Course Management.Although online material is available and assigned as a learning aid, class attendance is required. Each student

is responsible for the content of each class in the course as well as the required material which includes required readings and online videos.

Respectful behavior before, during, and after class sessions is expected which includes refraining from talking during lectures, arriving late, leaving early, use of cell phones, conducting work during lectures, asking inappropriate questions during lectures, or disrupting the learning process during lectures. Respectful behavior is expected during exams which includes refraining from carrying on a conversation with other students or me, listening to music, use of cell phones, or disrupting the exam time for other students.

Collaboration is encouraged throughout this course except for exams and composition of memo assignments. However, each student is responsible to submit work based on their understanding and ability. Collaboration is not required. Lack of collaboration or failure to attend class does not eliminate a student’s responsibility to submit assignments when due. Collaboration can include study groups utilizing external and internal sources. Although groups are not formally organized in this course, study groups organized by the students are encouraged. The only exception to collaboration is exams. No collaboration is allowed on exams.

Communication and Office Hours.I will be available before and after each class period for students to ask specific questions. I will have office hours from 3:30pm to 4:30pm on Monday and Wednesday in my office #4205 in the Business

School Building 4th floor. No appointment is required or made. I will meet with students on a first come first served basis. Office hours are provided to answer specific question as an aid in understanding the material. During office hours, I will not respond to requests such as grading assignments, working your homework for you or with you, giving lectures, or giving out answers to assignments. Office hours are not the only source of help for understanding the material. I expect a student to utilize the multiple sources available in this course in addition to office hours. Respect the time a student has during office hours and do not interrupt. I do not conduct office hours or answer questions about the material between exams or between final exams.

Discussions are provided on Canvas for students to discuss course material. Use the Canvas discussions for asking questions about the course material, answering questions about the course material, organizing study groups, making announcements about study groups, and other communications helpful for learning.

Email should only be used for necessary communication with me that does not include material already stated in the syllabus, announcements made in Canvas, or questions about the material that could be asked through the discussion provided in Canvas. Since accessing the original source is more effective in communications, I will direct you to appropriate sources if necessary. Any student email to me must only be to the email address [ [email protected] ] and must contain “BUSN 6630, 11 Month” in the subject area. If this address is not used, I may not receive the email or read the email. I will read and respond to emails Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday nights after 9pm that have been correctly sent before 9pm.

In summary, I am available in various manners Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. I am available before and after class to answer questions in person. I am not available other times in person or by email.

Quiz Assignments and Homework Assignments. Quiz assignments and homework assignments will be assigned and graded. Quiz assignments and homework

assignments will be available on Canvas and submitted through Canvas. No late assignments are accepted. Answers to assignments posted on Canvas after the due date.

Quiz assignments are based on material presented in the online videos and material available on the website [MDHarper.com]. Quiz assignments are designed as an introduction to a topic and primarily based on the online videos and material. Homework assignments are designed as a progressive learning instrument and based on material presented and discussed in class in addition to the material contained online.

Submit answers to assignments through Canvas. Quiz questions and homework questions will be posted on Canvas at appropriate times during the course. Carefully follow this procedure. Download the questions from Canvas which will be in a Word file. Obtain answers for all the questions. Only when all the answers are ready to submit, submit all the answers through Canvas at one time. Each student is responsible to submit answers through Canvas correctly, completely, and on time. Answers may be submitted only once. Assignments submitted will be accepted as an entire assignment and graded as an entire assignment. Once you begin submission, you have only 60 minutes to submit all the answers to an assignment only if all the answers are submitted on or before the due date and time for the assignment. The due date and time are strictly enforced by Canvas. Canvas will not allow submission after the due date and time even during the 60-minute time window. The entire assignment must be submitted on or before the due date and time indicated. No late assignments are accepted. Assignments not submitted have a grade of zero. The answers to the quiz and homework assignments will be posted online after the due date. No partial credit.

Never round during calculations, only round presentations. The rounding convention used: a number, X, with

a value 1.5≤X<2.5 is rounded to 2.0 if rounding to the unit digit.

Any grading errors on assignments should be resolved as soon as possible. No corrections to graded material will be made after the end of the course.

Collaboration is encouraged to aid in learning the material but not required. Although collaboration is encouraged, students are expected to perform their own work. The quiz and homework assignments are not intended to be a complete coverage of the material.

Memo Assignments. The memo assignments are small case studies. I will make available an “Assignment Memo” online at

appropriate times that will initiate work from each student. For each assignment memo, a student will submit two memos, a “Response Memo” and a “Technical Memo.” Each memo is limited to only one page. Submit both memos in one PDF file.

Design the “Response Memo” for the business environment that effectively communicates a professional response to the party requesting the work in the assignment memo. The response memo shall be succinct but adequate as well as originally composed, professionally prepared, and following a common format. Design the “Technical Memo” to describe the approach and quantitative methods utilized in obtaining the results presented in the response memo. The technical memo shall contain enough detail to support, describe, and adequately generate the technical portion of the response memo. Each memo must be self-contained, complete, descriptive, succinct and limited to one page. Generally, a ‘self-contained’ memo would not reference material in the other memo; a ‘complete’ memo would contain all the content to adequately achieve its objective; a ‘descriptive’ memo would contain a presentation that has literary competency; and a ‘succinct’ memo would not contain superfluous or inappropriate material.

The composition of the memos should reflect their different audiences, objectives, and scenarios as defined in the assignment memo. Although the response and technical memos are self-contained, they must correspond. Any item presented in the response memo must be supported in the technical memo. Consider the response memo an external communication document designed for the business environment and the technical memo an internal support document for internal support and review.

Each memo must be no more than one page in length. Both memos must be submitted together in one PDF file. Submit only two pages, no title page, no attachments, no appendices, and submit only through Canvas. Both memos are required to be composed in a professional manner (typed, dated, etc.) adhering to the following format where the student provides the information in italics.

Grading Guidelines for Memo Assignments:Grading Guidelines for Response and Technical Memos

# DescriptionMinimum

Point Reduction per Occurrence

1 Missing titles “Response Memo #_” and “Technical Memo #_” 1+

2 Improper format for “Response” or “Technical” memo. For example, not typed, lacking header information, or illegible. 1+

3 More than one page for “Response” or “Technical” Memo 1+4 Incorrect statement, values or approach. 1+5 Not ‘self-contained’. Relies on information not contained in the memo. 2+6 Not ‘complete’. Does not adequately achieve objective.

“Response” memo inadequately or incompletely addressing requests in the “Assignment” memo.

“Technical” memo inadequately or incorrectly supporting items presented in the “Response” memo.

4+

7 Not ‘descriptive’. Does not contain literary competency.Inappropriate “Response” memo. For example, not addressing business party

requesting work, not responding to the request, or responding to the wrong request.

Inappropriate “Technical” memo. For example, not creating a memo beyond mere calculations, not adequately describing the procedures taken, or not explaining the technical relationship to the results presented in the “Response” memo.

4+

8 Not ‘succinct’. Contains superfluous material lacking appropriate value. 2+

9 Missing “Response” or “Technical” memo. (Both memos must be submitted at the same time.) ½ deduction

Memo Composition, Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty. These guidelines are not exhaustive. I will be grading on memo content that adequately answers the client’s

requests and appropriately responds to the scenario presented. However, each student’s judgment of content and composition should reflect their knowledge, personality, and communication style. But each memo must be original and should exhibit professional quality and value.

Collaboration is encouraged to aid in learning the material but not required. Most importantly, collaboration should be limited to the calculations, analysis, and understanding of the content of the memo assignment but not the creation or composition of the response and technical memos. Each student is required to do their own writing, composition, production and submit originally composed memos. Essentially the same response memo or technical memo submitted by two or more students will received a zero and will be considered a violation of academic dishonesty standards. Academic dishonesty is cheating. The incident may also be reported to the Internal Affairs Committee of the Business School at the University of Colorado at Denver for further action. Do not assist another student by allowing them to see a copy of your written work. Academic dishonesty includes copying from another student or allowing a student to copy from your work in part or in whole.

The purposes of the memo assignments are to test your understanding of the techniques, your ability to correctly apply the methods presented in a business context, and your ability to communicate these concepts in a business environment.

Page 9

Page 10: mdharper.commdharper.com/.../uploads/2017/01/Syllabus-2017-Fall-1…  · Web viewThe Memo assignment is designed to communicate results from a ... Operations Management: ... Download

Exams. In class examination designed for evaluation will be given in this course. Each exam may be taken only once.

Exams will be in-class and timed. No collaboration is allowed. Collaboration is cheating. Each student is responsible to bring the Red Book, pen or pencil, calculator, and student ID. Each student is required to submit the exam within the scheduled time. If a student arrives late or experiences a delay during the time, the exam is still required to be done within the scheduled time. No other material especially homework or scratch paper is allowed. No other equipment especially communication devices such as phones or laptops are allowed. No sharing of material or equipment is allowed. If academic dishonest occurs on an exam, the student will receive a zero for the exam. Any incident of academic dishonesty may be reported to Internal Affairs Committee of the Business School at the University of Colorado at Denver for further action.

Answers to the exams will be posted online. Exams will be returned during class. Any corrections should be made as soon as possible. Answers to the exams will not be discussed until after they are returned. Exam grades will be posted on Canvas. Course grades will be reported to the registrar and will not be posted on Canvas.

Any absence at an exam will result in a zero for the exam. Make-up exams to replace a zero should be scheduled with me and taken as soon as possible. Make-up exam must be taken before the end of the course. No make-up exams will be given on or after the end of the course. Make-up exams are not the same as exams administered during the term but are equivalent exams based on the same material. Make-up exams are not subject to review and will not be returned.

Team Projects. Small teams will be formed by students to select and conduct independent research on a project topic based on

material from this course. Topics are selected from a list that I will provide on the website [MDHarper.com]. Each team will research one topic but each member of the team will research an individual aspect of the topic. The deliverables will include a team presentation of each student’s results and an individual report by each student. The project grade for each student will be 10% on the presentation and 90% on the individual report.

The originally composed individual report shall demonstrate the student’s knowledge of the research and an ability to effectively communicate the knowledge appropriate to a business professional. Each individual report must be unique. The length of the report should be more than two pages and follow the guideline of “succinct but adequate”. The length must be enough to adequately present your work. Length will be considered a negative if content is not significant.

Submit the completed individual report only through Canvas as a PDF file on or before the due date and time. Each report may only be submitted once, may only be submitted as a complete report, and must be submitted by the due date and time. A report not submitted has a grade of zero. No late reports accepted. Each student is required to submit original material for their individual report. Although collaboration is encouraged to conduct research, collaboration does not include copying from another student or allowing a student to copy from you on individual work that is submitted.

Submit your report through Canvas as a PDF file. Do not use a cover page but use the title below on the first page where the student supplies the information in italics.

The team project presentations are presentations on a topic consisting of a summary of each person’s research. The primary purpose of the team project presentations is to inform your colleagues on the research finding from each person on the team. Each person on the team is required to present a summary of their research. Each person on the team will be limited to approximately two minutes of presentation time. For each individual presentation, do not read your report or cover detail in your report but present a general overview and significant findings that will be of interest to your colleagues. Consider each presentation as a formal production beginning with PowerPoint slides and moving smoothly between each presenter. The presentation could incorporate other media, possibly including but not limited to, pictures, Word, Excel, or video. Each group may be as creative as they wish. Only one submission of presentation material is necessary through Canvas for each team.

Assignments. Assignments consist of quiz assignments, homework assignments, memo assignments, and a project report assignment. All assignments are submitted through Canvas. Each assignment not received when due has a grade of zero. No late assignments are accepted. Grades will be posted online during the course. Final Course Grades are submitted through registrar and not on Canvas. No corrections to the grade will be considered after the last day of class.

Last Day of Class. The last day of class represents the end of the course. Nothing will be considered after the last day of class. All make-up exams must be scheduled and taken before the last day of class.

Academic Dishonesty. In the event academic dishonesty occurs on an assignment or an exam, the work will receive a grade of zero. Any incident of academic dishonesty may be reported to Internal Affairs Committee of the Business School at the University of Colorado Denver for further action.

Conduct. I expect strict adherence to the code of conduct as stated in the Catalog of the University of Colorado at Denver.

I will take action and initiate due process against violations of the code of conduct. Violations include verbal and physical disruption or intimidation. Actions to initiate due process can include a formal report to the Behavioral Assessment and Threat Assessment Team (BETA)

the Campus Assessment, Response, & Evaluation Team (CARE)

or the Internal Affairs Committee of the Business School at the University of Colorado at Denver. Conduct also includes etiquette before, during, and after each class that is respectful to all people, the facilities, and the institution.

Commitment Expectation. Taking this course represents your commitment to perform the work when due. Faculty policies have stated that classes in the business school should require of their students a workload in and out of class that enhances quality education and is consistent with the amount of academic credit granted for a course. It is expected that a student will spend time out of class, on the average, from two to three times the time spent in class. This course requires work due on a regular basis.

Incomplete Grades. No incomplete grades are given.

Statement. Policies in this syllabus apply to each student equally. I will consider special circumstances but standards will not be compromised and all work must be completed during the course. Any action taken by me that might be taken as varying from these policies shall not be a cause to eliminate or alter any student’s responsibility to adhere to all the requirements of the course or to prevent my action in enforcing the policies in the course to every student.
