March is here!! I want to thank all the parents who come to the recent parent instructional tour. We shared our writing program and observed students writing in classrooms.

There is a lot of excellent information included in this newsletter, especially on the 2017-2018 school calendar. I encourage you to read that section. Also, please look at the calendar for upcoming events.

Richard Montgomery HS Educator Named MCPS Teacher of the Year

Richard Montgomery High School teacher Nancy Shay was named the 20172018 Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) Teacher of the Year on April 26. Shay, who has worked for MCPS for nearly 30 years, was named Teacher of the Year during the 15th annual Champions for Children Awards Celebration, an event honoring excellence in education. Shay will now go on to compete for Maryland Teacher of the Year.

Shay was one of three finalists for Teacher of the Year honors, along with Melissa Segal, fourth grade team leader at Luxmanor Elementary School, and Cherin Hershkowitz, math content specialist at Roberto W. Clemente Middle School.

2017 Graduation Schedule

The 2017 high school commencement season is set to begin on Friday, May 26, and will end on Wednesday, June 14. The graduation ceremonies being held at DAR Constitution Hall will stream live online for families and friends that cannot attend the events but still would like to be a part of the celebration. Operation Safe Ride to School

The Montgomery County Police Department Operation Safe Ride to School initiative is both an educational and enforcement campaign that focuses on distracted driving, and seat belt and child safety use around Montgomery County public school entrances and drop-off lanes during the morning arrival of students. The initiative began in April and will continue throughout the month of May. The Police Department has received numerous complaints and concerns that drivers are talking on cell phones during school drop-off and are not properly securing children in car seats or are not using safety seats.

This month, Traffic Division officers will begin the enforcement component of this initiative and will enforce the illegal use of cell phones by drivers and seat belt and safety use violations around public schools during the morning arrival of students. A blurb is provided below.

Board of Education Seeks Applicants to Fill Position on Ethics Panel

The Montgomery County Board of Education is seeking to fill one vacancy on its five-member Ethics Panel. The vacancy is for a three-year term beginning on July 1, 2017. Members serve without compensation. A blurb is provided below.

Public Comment Sought on Nondiscrimination, Equity, and Cultural Proficiency Policy

The Board has tentatively approved changes to Board Policy ACA, Human Relations, and recommended changing the name of Policy ACA to Nondiscrimination, Equity, and Cultural Proficiency. The revised policy includes the purposes and expectations of current Board policies ACA, Human Relations, ACB, Nondiscrimination, ACE, Gender Equity, GBA, Workforce Diversity, and GMA, Human Relations Training of MCPS Staff.

The renamed policy affirms the Boards desire to create an educational community guided by its five core valuesLearning, Respect, Relationships, Equity, and Excellencethat is deeply committed to ensuring that all students are supported to succeed and all staff are empowered to do their best work. The draft of Policy ACA is available for public comment until Friday, May 26. Nine MCPS Schools Placed on U.S. News and World Reports Best High Schools List

Nine Montgomery County public schools earned spots on the 2017 Best High Schools list, published by U.S. News and World Report. Five high schools received a gold medal, including Winston Churchill High School, which ranked 1st in Maryland and 75th nationally. Additionally, four MCPS schools received a silver medal for being among the top 2,609 high schools in the nation.

Move More Montgomery Festival Set for May 6

Montgomery County Recreation will host the second annual Move More Montgomery Festival on Saturday, May 6. The Move More Montgomery Festival, a field-day athletic festival, will feature a community walk, sport and fitness demonstrations, active performances and mini-classes, interactive wellness booths, and the Fido Fitness Arena. The event will be held rain or shine and is free and open to the public. A blurb is provided below.
