Possible extra activities to support outcomes
Note for teachers:
The Engage exercise recaps the Pentecost story. This offers another opportunity for any pupils who has not yet mastered the content. In Acts the Story of Philip and the Ethiopian refers to the Ethiopian as a eunuch. In the adapted version I have left this out but also tried to make some of the points slightly clearer.
Engage
Sing together the song Colours of Day (or play it to them) (This music does introduce symbolism but it is mainly being used so you can recap the story)
Look at the words of the song and link these words back to the Pentecost story. The PowerPoint looks at the first verse and chorus and then looks at the Fruits of the Holy Spirit. In order to help the pupils learn the fruits of the Spirit you may want to watch and play https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3J1mqpLXnCc (Brentwood Kids sing Fruits of the Spirit)
Explore and Express
Make sure pupils understand what each of the Fruits of the Spirit mean then give each pair a fruit of the spirit and ask them how they (or if more appropriate Christians) could show that gift in their lives. Create a display. You could use the fruit templates for pupils to write their examples on. Explain that the disciples after the coming of the Holy Spirit tried to display these gifts in their lives. We are now going to hear one story. The story of Philip.
Read the story of Philip and the Ethiopian. There is an adapted version of the story on the PowerPoint (If you read the account from the Bible you will have to explain lots of extra details)
In pairs pupils could create a drama about the story and/ or create questions they would want to ask either Philip or the Ethiopian
Design a poster about the story giving the key messages of the story. For those working towards you may need to give them some key messages or switch to a simpler activity- ask what fruits of the Spirit Philip put into practice. He was Faithful to God and did what God asked, he was kind to the Ethiopian etc. Pupils working at age related outcomes should be able to arrive at some of these by themselves or pick up the key messages. (Philip trusted in God and in order to be close to God he spent time in Prayer. He allowed himself to be guided by the Spirit. Sometimes you need help in understanding God’s word. (The Ethiopian needed Philip to explain what it all meant). Jesus came for everyone. (Or the Good News is that God is there for everyone) Following Jesus can make you happy etc.
4
Look at the Isaiah Quote 52:7 (attached). How might this apply to Philip. What does it mean to Christians today? Each person in the class creates a footprint on it they write the most important piece of Good News that Philip might have told the Ethiopian. (Note rather than just something vague here pupils should use a scripture quote- on the worksheet I have offered ten possible quotes they could use. If pupils are confident they could look up the quotes so delete the actual quotes from the table otherwise you may need to give them the table with the quotes on. If working beyond they may want to choose their own passage completely independently. I have just included soundbites but equally good would be paraphrasing a parable or incident from Jesus’ life. If they can give reasons for their choice this would be AT3
Look at different newsletters from Parishes. Have pupils identify the different activities the parish does and link these to the Fruits of the Spirit. (With a reflective question AT3 just identifying AT2)

Read carefully the words of this song
Colours of day dawn into the mind, The sun has come up, the night is behind. Go down in the city, into the street,And let’s give the message to the people we meet
So light up the fire and let the flame burn,Open the door, let Jesus return.Take seeds of his Spirit, let the fruit grow,Tell the people of Jesus, let his love show
Go through the park, on into the town; The sun still shines on, it never goes down. The light of the world is risen again; The people of darkness are needing our friend.
Open your eyes, look into the sky,The darkness has come, the sun came to die.The evening draws on, the sun disappears,But Jesus is living, and his Spirit is near.

The Prophet Isaiah wrote this:
“How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger who
announces peace,who brings good news,
who announces salvation”
Who was the messenger in our story?
Why would he definitely have had to use his feet?
Who did he bring Good News too?
The Word Gospel means Good News. What do you think the most important piece of Good News is? Look at these quotes from scripture. Draw round your foot and in the footprint, write what you think is the most important piece of Good News.
