Introduction

• Sinusitis is an inflammation of one or more sinuses

• The main functions of these sinuses are to warm, moisten and filter air in the nasal cavity

• They also play an important role in our ability to vocalize certain sounds

What is sinusitis?

• Inflammation of nasal cavities as a result of a common cold or allergy which has become complicated

• The nose and sinuses become infected and produce excess mucus

• People with allergies have an increased

risk of chest infection

What is sinusitis?

• When maxillary sinuses become blocked and filled with fluid, bacteria can grow

• Sinusitis can occur from time to time or occur more often, especially in cold weather

Types of sinusitis

• Acute - Symptoms may last less than four weeks

• Sub Acute - Symptoms can last from 4-8 weeks– May begin as a common cold and then become an infection

• Chronic - Symptoms can last 8 weeks or more

Symptoms

• Yellow or green mucus from the nose or down the throat

• Bad taste in mouth or bad breath

• Nasal congestion and headaches

• Pain or pressure in face and head

• Tooth pain

• Coughing

• Headache

• Fever and chills

• Swelling around the eyes or cheeks

• Fatigue

Diagnosis

• For a correct diagnosis, a physician performs a physical examination and various tests, including:

– Allergy tests

– Sinus X rays

– Tomography (shows sinus cavities)

Treatment

• Use of medications, such as:

- Decongestants

- Saline nasal rinse

• Surgery - only considered if the prescribed treatment has failed

Preventive Measures

• Get vaccinated annually against influenza

• Wash hands frequently with antibacterial soap and warm water

• Eat fruits rich in antioxidants to boost your immune system

Preventive Measures

• Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke

• Avoid contact with hair and animal dandruff

• Keep your home clean, preventing dust accumulation

• Avoid having carpeting in the home

• Avoid alcohol – it can worsen sinus swelling

Treatment

• Talk to your physician before using any medication, even over the counter drugs

• Apply a warm cloth or towel on the face
