- In a letter conjunctions are used to make the writing flow. Time conjunctions are often used at the start of a paragraph.

- Fronted adverbials are words or phrases which go at the beginning of sentence to provide extra information.

- In a letter you must include the address of the sender and the recipient.

- The greeting in a letter often starts with ‘Dear’ or ‘To’.

As Big Billy Goat’s Gruff you will be writing a letter to the Council to convince them to get rid of the evil troll!. Remind yourself of the story ‘The three Billy Goats Gruff’. Your letter will have an introduction, 3 middle paragraphs and a conclusion.

Have a look back at the features you found in the first lesson and try to include features you identified to help you make your fact file effective.

Use the planning format on the next page to write your key points in note form. You can add extra lines if you need to.

P1 – Who? What? Where? Why? Why are you writing and what are you asking for?

P2 – When did you first notice the troll being a problem? How is the troll affecting you?

P3 – How is the troll affecting your family? What is the troll stopping your family from doing?

P4 – How is the troll affecting your friends and the community? Is everyone scared to go out?

P5 – Summarise your main points. Why is it so important to you as the oldest goat?

Today you are going to write a letter to the Council to convince them to get rid of the evil troll! Remember that the letter is from Big Billy Goats Gruff.

Re-read the examples from the first lesson to remind yourself what a good one looks like, use your work from the word class lesson, gathering language lesson and your plan yesterday.

Start by writing out your checklist so that you have something to tick at the end to check you’ve included everything that you thought would make your writing effective.
