Bognor Regis WI THE BUZZ Issue 87 April 2018 Our Next Meeting – Tuesday May 8 th 2018 This will be our resolutions meeting, when we will discuss the resolution which will be proposed at the Annual Meeting in Cardiff, and let our delegate know how we wish her to vote. The resolution this year is …. Mental health matters as much as physical health. The NFWI urges all WI members to recognise the importance of parity between mental health and physical health, and take action to make it as acceptable to talk about mental health issues as much as physical health issues, and to lobby government for better support for mental illness. We will also be holding a Swishing session (see below). There will be an accessories sale (so bring in your unwanted shoes, belts scarves, jewellery etc) As May 8 th will be the 100 th anniversary of VE Day – our competition will be to make a VE Day Flag. Swishing At the meeting next Tuesday, you will all receive a note, prepared by Katie, which explains how the swishing in May will work. We will need clothes rails if you have one? This is not just a chance to refresh your wardrobe but also helps with the really serious environmental problems caused by textile waste. Below are eight reasons, supplied by Gina, why we need to think about how we buy and dispose of clothing: 1

THE BUZZ Issue 87 April 2018

Our Next Meeting – Tuesday May 8 th 2018 This will be our resolutions meeting, when we will discuss the resolution which will be proposed at the Annual Meeting in Cardiff, and let our delegate know how we wish her to vote.

There will be an accessories sale (so bring in your unwanted shoes, belts scarves, jewellery etc)

As May 8th will be the 100th anniversary of VE Day – our competition will be to make a VE Day Flag.

SwishingAt the meeting next Tuesday, you will all receive a note, prepared by Katie, which explains how the swishing in May will work. We will need clothes rails if you have one? This is not just a chance to refresh your wardrobe but also helps with the really serious environmental problems caused by textile waste. Below are eight reasons, supplied by Gina, why we need to think about how we buy and dispose of clothing:

If we changed the way the UK supplies, uses and disposes of clothing, we could reduce the carbon, water and waste footprints of clothing consumption by 10-20% each. This could cut around £3 billion per year from the cost of the resources we use to make and clean clothes.

Around £140 million worth (350,000 tonnes) of used clothing goes to landfill in the UK every year

More than 30% of our unwanted clothing currently goes to landfill. In the UK, we send 700,000 tonnes of clothing to be re-used or recycled

each year – enough to fill 459 Olympic-size swimming pools. 57% of people say they recycle their textiles. 41% of people say they’re not aware of recycling facilities for textiles. More than 60% of householders in the UK say they have unwanted clothes

and textiles stored in their homes In 2010, we threw out an estimated £238m-worth of textiles for waste

collection and sent to landfill – but all of this could have been re-used, recycled or sent for energy recovery.

Free Yoga Taster Session:

Hello, my name is Nicola Whitehead and I am a local yoga instructor. I would like to offer your members a free taster yoga session at 1 of my 2 gentle yoga classes:

Mondays 9.45-11.15 Willowhale Community Centre, Aldwick, PO21 4JF (regular price £7)

Tuesdays 12.15-1.30 Swanfield Park Community Centre, Chichester, PO19 6GH (regular price £8)

These classes are very suitable for beginners, older practitioners and more experienced practitioners wanting a gentler practice. We explore breath techniques, gentle postures & movement, balance, relaxation and sometimes use essential oils.

I am eager to connect with the local community and am especially passionate about engaging those who haven't tried yoga before.

Note from Kate: I had my free session on Monday and found it very good, plenty of room, I could do most of the exercises, and Nicola was very nice – will go again - recommend it.
