3 EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

3.1.1 Examine substrates, structure and installation conditions. Do not proceed with architectural concrete masonry work until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected.

3.1.2 Verify items provided by other Sections of work are properly sized and located.

3.1.3 Verify that items to be built in are in proper location, and ready for roughing into masonry work.

3.1.4 If substrate preparation is the responsibility of another installer, notify Architect of unsatisfactory preparation before proceeding.

3.2 PREPARATION

3.2.1 Clean substrate surfaces thoroughly prior to installation.

3.2.2 Verify that pocket recesses or chases provided under other section are accurately located and sized.

3.2.3 Establish lines, levels and coursing. Verify anchors and flashings are correctly located and installed.

3.2.4 Furnish temporary bracing as required during installation of masonry work. Maintain in place until building structure provides permanent support.

3.2.5 Prepare surfaces using the methods recommended by the manufacturer for achieving the best result for the substrate under the project conditions.

3.3 INSTALLATION

3.3.1 Install products in accordance with manufacturer's instructions, approved submittals and in proper relationship with adjacent construction and the following:3.3.1.1 Arrange coursing pattern to provide consistent joint work throughout.3.3.1.2 Locate and secure perimeter metal chase.3.3.1.3 Coat sill under units with asphalt emulsion as a bond breaker.3.3.1.4 Mortar joints must be solid. Furrowing is not permitted. Neatly tool surface to a

concave joint.3.3.1.5 Place panel reinforcing in horizontal joint above first course of block and not

more than 18 inches (457 mm) on center for Standard Series, every other course for Thinline Series. Panel anchors if used shall be installed in the same joints as reinforcing.

3.3.1.6 Isolate panel from adjacent construction on sides and top with expansion strips. Keep expansion joint voids clear of mortar.

3.3.1.7 Maintain uniform joint width of 1/4 in (6 mm) plus or minus 1/8 in (3 mm).3.3.1.8 Maximum variation from plane of unit to next unit to be 1/32 in (0.8 mm).3.3.1.9 Maximum variation of panel from plane to be 1/16 in (1.5 mm).3.3.1.10 Do not use retempered mortar.3.3.1.11 Do not tap glass block with steel tools.3.3.1.12 When mortar has set, pack backer rod in jamb and head channels. Recess to

allow for sealant.3.3.1.13 Apply sealant as required.

3.4 CLEANING

3.4.1 Remove excess mortar from glass surfaces with a damp cloth before set occurs.

3.4.2 Strike and tool joints as required for proper sealing/

3.4.3 Number 4 (0000) steel wool can be used to remove remaining mortar and dried film.

3.5 PROTECTION

3.5.1 Protect installed products until completion of project.3.5.1.1 Protect top of wall until covered or capped to a waterproof condition by

subsequent construction.3.5.1.2 Prevent grout, mortar, and soil from staining the face of masonry to be left

exposed. Remove immediately any grout, mortar, and soil that comes in contact with such masonry.

3.5.1.3 Protect base of walls from rain-splashed mud and mortar splatter by means of coverings spread on ground and over wall surface.
