(Sometimes the bird tells us extra parts of the story which are not in the book, and the words which the characters say are not written down either.) Talk about the hare and the tortoise: What do we know about each of the two main characters? Can you think of 5 things that we know about each of them? The hare stops three times in the race. What are his three reasons for stopping? After the race is finished, the hare and the tortoise are kind to one another. We can tell they are being kind from what they say and what they do. What does hare say and do? What does tortoise say and do? Think about a time when you have been in a race or a game. Perhaps you were competing on your own or maybe you were in a team. Can you remember if you were the winner or came in second or third or fourth? Can you remember how you felt before it, while you were taking part and after the finish? Did other people support you like hare and tortoise did by saying ‘Well done!’, or ‘Good race!’ or ‘Good game!’ or ‘Thank you?’ Did you support others by congratulating them or saying thank you for taking part? We cannot always be the winner but trying our best while we are taking part is important. Reading-L.I – To discuss the reasons for events in a storyActivity 1 - Have fun listening to the story of ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’ which is a traditional fable by Aesop.https://www.youtube.com/w atch?v=P6kLLB9twzc

Think about what happens to the characters. Who is the faster runner? Who should win the race? What happens at the finishing line? Why?

Activity 2 – The characters and the plot.Have fun reading again the story of ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’ which is a traditional fable by Aesop. Join in with reading as many of the words as you can when they are being highlighted in the story. (Sometimes the bird tells us extra parts of the story which are not in the book, and the words which the characters say are not written down either.)

Talk about the hare and the tortoise: What do we know about each of the two main characters? Can you think of 5 things that we know

about each of them? The hare stops three times in the race. What are his three reasons for stopping? After the race is finished, the hare and the tortoise are kind to one another. We can tell they are

being kind from what they say and what they do.

Did other people support you like hare and tortoise did by saying ‘Well done!’, or ‘Good race!’ or

‘Good game!’ or ‘Thank you?’ Did you support others by congratulating them or saying thank you for taking part?

We cannot always be the winner but trying our best while we are taking part is important. At Craiglockhart Sports Day we normally earn house points for our teams for taking part, trying our best, supporting and congratulating our friends, thanking them for a good race, being kind and helpful as well as for being in first or second or third place.

Activity 3 – Have fun reading again the traditional fable of ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’. CHALLENGE - Find two toys to be the tortoise and the hare or make little puppets from paper of card or a sock to act out the story. Design a racecourse for the characters. It could be in your home or outside. The route might have twists and turns, hills to race up and down, things to jump over or crawl under or through. Tell the story of The Hare and the Tortoise as you move the puppets around the racecourse. Don’t forget to have a finishing line!

Activity 4 – Reading the story by yourselfHave fun reading again the story of ‘The Tortoise and the Hare’.Today try switching off the sound by muting the speaker icon and see if you can read the story yourself. You might want to try a few pages or even the whole book. The highlighting can be quite quick, but you can take as long as you need.

CHALLENGE – If you could rewrite the story what would you change to make it different? Would you change anything about the characters? Would you make the race different? How would your version of this traditional fable end? Have fun!

Writing-L.I – To form letters correctly

HandwritingThis week we are continuing to practise our handwriting. We are writing the letters l, i, t, u, y.

Follow the link to Doorway Online.https://tp3-2018-cs19.herokuapp.com/letter_number_formation/

Click on the little cross in the letter boxes to delete the letters which were there already. Now select the letters l, i, t, u, y. Watch how the letters are formed. Try writing them on the screen if you can, or follow with your finger. Select shuffle for a different order. Experiment with different sizes and speeds. You might also be able to write the letters by selecting ‘free draw’.

Now write the letters in your yellow jotter or on your whiteboard. Make sure that you always start at the top and do not lift your pencil or pen until the letter is complete (except for t where you will need to finish by adding the line across travelling forwards). Please check that you are sitting properly and that you are holding your pencil correctly. Leave a space between your letters. Write 5 or 6 of each letter in a line. Put a dot or tick beside a good one that you are pleased with in each line.

Have fun practising writing your letters correctly in different ways. You could use coloured pens, chalks on the ground, water and a brush outside, a sponge or cloth in the bath or shower, with your finger on the carpet or table or cushion, with your whole hand in the air pretending to wash the windows, gently with your finger on

someone’s back. Can you help a teddy or a toy to make the letters? Make sure that they are writing accurately. Can you think of your own ideas too?EXTRA CHALLENGE – Can you make the letters with your toe? With your elbow? Your nose? If someone in your family writes the letter gently on your back can you guess which letter they are writing? Have fun!

SPORTS WRITING CHALLENGE – This activity is linked to our Health and Wellbeing and Mathematics Sports Theme this week.

Using paper or your whiteboard, make a Sports Checklist of what you will need for your Sports events.

Think about the different events. Write or draw the equipment you will need in a list e.g. potato, spoon, ball… Remember you also need to take your tally mark score sheet and a pencil. Don’t forget your water bottle! When you are ready to do your Sports Events, read each item on your list and check that you have it

ready. Tick and move on until you have everything you need. If you are going outside, you might need a big bag or box to carry it all!

When you have finished your sports events, you can check your list again to make sure that you have not left any equipment behind. Have fun.

Talking and Listening-L. I To listen to a story, making simple notes to aid retelling of the story. This week our listening story The Smartest Giant by Julia DonaldsonListen to the story. Remember to pause the video to answer questions, share your ideas, opinions and predictions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAP-46zi6qI&feature=youtu.be

There are some lovely suggested activities at the end of this story that you might like to try.

Listen to the story again this time can you pause the video to take a note every time George stops to an item of clothing to someone in need. What does he give away? Who does he give it to? Remember a note is a word or a picture that will remind you about what has happened.

Use your notes to help you retell the story. Practise using different voices for different characters. Can you make up your own tune to sing George’s song?

Expressive Arts (Art)- L I- I can create musical ideas using sound and rhythm. Here are wonderful art ideas from Mrs Watson our Specialist Art Teacher.

P2 – Can you make a funny face like the artist Arcimboldo using paper cut-out fruit and veg? (see attached resource sheets and help-sheet) All you will need is paper, glue and scissors and lots of imagination!

Expressive Arts (Music)- L I- I can create musical ideas using sound and rhythm. Here are Mrs Guinney’s wonderful music ideas for this week:

P2 Minibeats cont.

Following on from our lesson last week about minibeasts, we are going to try to add our own ‘sound effects’ to a poem about minibeasts, called ‘The Bugs and The Stars’.

1. Firstly, see how well you can remember the song you learned called ‘Minibeasts.’

Words below……

11

Page 12: craiglockhartprimary.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewPrimary 2 Weekly Home Learning Grid for School Closures W/B 8.6.20. Below are lots of links to resources and activities,

2. Now listen to the poem ‘The Bugs and The Stars.’ (see words below.) Can you draw pictures of these creatures mentioned in the poem, or your favourite one? Do you know what they all look like?

3. Now listen to the poem again, this time it has music played while the poem is read. It has a ‘backing track.’

4. Try to think of any sounds that you’d like to add to this poem. Can you think e.g. of a tinkly sound for stars….? or a short sound that could imitate a nod, a rustly sound perhaps for grass…. there are no right or wrong ideas…. you decide what type of sound effect you would like to add!

5. Once you’ve decided on your sound effects, see if you can add / play/ them at the right time while the poem is being read, then try to add them to the sound effect version. Have fun!
