Reading-L.I - To comment on the writer’s choice of words and other featuresActivity 1 - Have fun listening to the story ‘The Dragon Machine’ by Helen Ward illustrated by Wayne Anderson.https://www.booktrust.org.uk/books-and-reading/have-some-fun/storybooks-and-games/the-dragon-machine/

Now read the story again. Join in with reading as many of the words as you can when they are being highlighted in the story.

Activity 2 – Talk about the ‘wow’ words in this bookHave fun reading again the story ‘The Dragon Machine’ by Helen Ward illustrated by Wayne Anderson.Join in with reading as many of the words as you can when they are being highlighted in the story. Talk about the words which the author Helen Ward uses in this book. There are many amazing ‘wow’ words in

the story. Here are some questions to think about:

Who in the story goes unnoticed, unseen, ignored and overlooked? What does this actually mean? The writer uses a lot of words to describe sounds. What was it in the story that clicked, whirred,

rattled and clunked, clattered, banged and crashed? What were the mischievous things that the dragons were doing to cause havoc? The dragon machine lumbered off to the Great Wilderness. Can you move in a lumbering way to

show how you think the dragon machine was travelling?

CHALLENGE – Using the sound words above can you find things around your home to create the sounds? What would make a whirring? What might rattle, clatter or bang? Can you find something to make a crashing sound? A clicking sound? And how about clunking? Have fun!

Activity 3 – Punctuation Have fun reading again the story ‘The Dragon Machine’ by Helen Ward illustrated by Wayne Anderson.Join in with reading as many of the words as you can when they are being highlighted in the story. Look for punctuation as you go. Can you spot capital letters and full stops? Are there any exclamation marks? What about commas? On the page where George is at the library reading the dire warnings, there is a semi colon. This is a dot with a comma underneath it. Can you find it? The author has used it because there are two separate ideas one after the other in the same sentence. She has chosen NOT to use a connective to join the ideas together. CHALLENGE - Can you find several ellipses or dot dot dot ‘ … ‘ punctuation symbols in the story? Why has the author put them there? Do they change the way you read or tell the story?

Activity 4 – Reading the story by yourselfHave fun reading again the story ‘The Dragon Machine’ by Helen Ward illustrated by Wayne Anderson.Today try switching off the sound by muting the speaker icon and see if you can read the story yourself. The highlighting is quite quick, but you can take as long as you need. You might want to try a few pages or even the whole book.CHALLENGE – At the end of the story George gets a dog which no-one else notices is actually not a dog! What do you think could happen next after the end of the book?

Writing-L.I – To form letters correctlyHandwriting

This week we are practising our handwriting. We are writing the letters r, n, m, h, b, k, p. These letters all start of at the top.

Follow the link to Doorway Online.https://tp3-2018-cs19.herokuapp.com/letter_number_formation/

Click on the little cross in the letter boxes to delete the letters which were there already. Now select the letters r, n, m, h, b, k, p. Please select letter the letter k lower case which has a loop. Thank you. Watch how the letters are formed. Try writing them on the screen if you can or follow with your finger. Select shuffle for a different order. Experiment with different sizes and speeds. You might also be able to write the letters by selecting ‘free draw’.

Now write the letters in your yellow jotter or on your whiteboard. Make sure that you always start at the top and do not lift your pencil or pen until the letter is complete. Please check that you are sitting properly and that you are holding your pencil correctly. Leave a space between your letters. Write 5 or 6 of each letter in a line. Put a dot or tick beside a good one that you are pleased with in each line.Have fun practising writing your letters correctly using the 10 new ways you discovered last week. E.g. gently on someone’s back with your finger; with a stick on the ground.

CHALLENGE – Use your beautiful handwriting to make a card to say thank you to someone special.Think of someone kind who helps you or looks after you. It could be someone at home, or someone else in your family who is not living in your home. It could be someone at school, or at a club you go to. Make a card to say thank-you to this person for the care and help they give. Think about what kind of thing you could you say on your card – it could be a simple ‘thank you’ or a longer message. What would you like to draw on your card? Something you like? Or something that the person receiving the card will enjoy? Or a picture of you saying ‘thank-you’?Remember to use accurate and beautifully neat handwriting. Think about bright colours for your illustrations, too. Try to deliver or send your card or take a photo of your card to send.

Spelling-L.I - To read and write compound words, tricky words and sentences. This week we are continuing with compound words. These words are made from joining two short words together to make a new longer word e.g. rain + coat = raincoat.

Activity 1 – read and write these new compound spelling words. Can you put some of them into a spoken sentence?

raincoat, sunset, nightdress, downstairs, earplug, rainbowAdult please write these sentences – ‘Bruce will paint his bedroom walls and his friend Vince will help him. Why don’t we go into the greenhouse and plant some seeds?’ Read the sentences. Ask your child to find the compound words. Read the sentences again, pointing to the words as you both read.Write new tricky word ‘those’. Read it, write it, hide it and say the letter sounds.CHALLENGE – Read your tricky word cards one by one and keep in a pile all the ones that you get right. How many are in your pile?

Activity 2 – read and write these new compound spelling words – toothbrush, woodland, daydream, playroom, bookshelf, seafood. Talk about their meanings.

Adult please write these sentences – ‘Jack threw his huge coat on his back and ran outside into the

snowstorm. Those cupcakes are hot and are very good to eat!’Read the sentences. Ask your child to find compound words, tricky words, punctuation. Read the sentences again, pointing to the words as you both read.Write new tricky word ‘buy’. Read it, write it, hide it and say the letter sounds. Say a sentence using the word ‘buy’.CHALLENGE – In your jotter draw lines to make 4 boxes at the top of the page. Write 4 compound words and draw a picture for each. On the lines underneath write a clue for one of the words.

Activity 3 – read these new compound spelling words – seashore, whiteboard, chopstick, teabag, campfire, footprint. Can you find the two short words in

each?DICTATION – in your yellow jotter write these words – spaceship, teacup, outside, bathroom. Now write this sentence remembering capital letter, finger spaces and full stop: ‘I will make a campfire myself then cook hotdogs for tea!’. Read your sentence through when you have written it. What is the connective?

CHALLENGE – FUN QUIZ TIME! Guess the word from these clues: An area with lots of trees like the area we go to for Forest Schools.

Something you can write and draw on and then wipe clean again. Many people have been putting pictures of one of these in their window. This will give you a clue that animal has walked in the sand or the mud.

Activity 4 – read and write the new tricky word ‘first’. Read it, write it, hide it and say the letter sounds.Make up a spoken sentence with each of our new tricky words this week – those, buy, firstCHALLENGE – Can you invent a sentence using all three of our new tricky words?

Play this compound word game. Please ask an adult to help you with the scissors. Choose 5 of the compound words this week. Make word cards with the whole word. Now cut the words in half so that e.g. rainbow gets cut into rain and bow. Shuffle the 10 cards and place them face up. Can you read the short words and match them to make the compound words?

CHALLENGE – SILLY WORDS! Can you make new silly words by mixing up the beginnings and the ends e.g. toothbrush and woodland could become toothland and woodbrush! Have fun!

Ratounet teaches family vocabulary in French

Numeracy and Maths-L.I To use knowledge of addition and subtraction facts to complete missing number problems. To estimate and measure height using nonstandard units of measurement.Activity 1 We have practised recall and counting on strategies. Today we are going to practise double addition facts. Listen to the double number bonds to 20 song:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e-KTHfrFit0

Make a note of all the double bonds to 20 on your white board e.g. 1 + 1 = 2 2 +2 = 4……..10 + 10 = 20

Challenge: Can you continue the double bonds beyond 10 + 10? 13 + 13 = 26 or 26 + 26 = 52 or further?Practise quick recall of double strategies on Hit the Button.Choose the Doubles section on the menu.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/hit-the-button

Extra Challenge Choose a double fact between 1-10. Write it down and then follow this example by doubling the answer.E.g. 4 + 4 = 8 8 + 8 = 16 16 + 16 = 32 32 + 32 = 64

Activity 2 Using your double addition skills we are going to practise near double strategies or doubles plus 1.E.g. 2+2=4 so 2+3 ( is 1 more so) =5

Watch this clip to help you.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/z7svcdm

Complete this sheet. Remember you do not have to print it out you can copy it on to your whiteboard.

Now complete these number sentences:

1 + 1 = so 1 + 2 =

4 + 4 = so 4 + 5 =

5 + 5 = so 5 + 6 =

6 + 6 = so 6 + 7 =

10 + 10 = so 10 + 11 =

You can use this layout to write down double facts from 11 - 20

Challenge: Play this game to practise your near double recall skills. If you do not have a dice at home write the numbers from 1-6 ( or 7-12 or 13-18 depending on your challenge level) on paper and instead of rolling the dice close your eyes, spin 2 fingers in the air and point to a number.

Have fun!

Activity 3 Using your addition skills to solve missing number addition problems.

If 3 + 4 = 7 we know that 4 + 3 = 7So, we can work out the missing number by recall or we can use counting on or double/near double strategies to work it out.

3 + = 7 Either recall the answer Or count on from 3 to 7 Or use 3 + 3 = 6 so 3 + 4 = 7

Have a go at answering these missing addition problems

You can also play this game to practise missing number addition. Can you say which strategy you are using?

Expressive Art (Drama/Music/Art)- L I- I can create musical ideas using sound and rhythm. Here are Mrs Guinney’s wonderful music ideas for this week:

P2If I Were A Minibeast!

In this lesson about minibeasts, think about the creatures you like the best. Which type of minibeast would you like to be? Would you like to be able to fly, or to crawl underground?

1. Listen to our new song called ‘If I Were A Minibeast2. See if you can follow the words below while you listen.3. Try to sing along with the song. Can you remember the order, in which the minibeasts are named

in the song?4. Now look at the grid below. You will see 4 different creatures. All have a different rhythm to

sound their name. Can you clap their names? Owl – 1 long sound, Spider – 2 sounds, Ladybird – 3 sounds and Caterpillar – 4 sounds.

5. Now see if you can clap the grid. Move from left to right and then move on to the next row of

pictures until you can clap all 4 lines!

6. You can try turning the grid round. Rotating it 90°, this will give you 4 different rhythm patterns to tap / clap!

7. You could now try and create your own new and crazy looking minibeasts. Ladybirds with stripes, or worms with fins, beetles with a shell behind them…… you could give them new names, you could even try to work out the rhythm sounds of your new creatures or design, draw your own rhythm grid using your new ‘minibeasts’!

Building Resilience-L.I To know that looking after my mental health is just as important as looking after my physical healthBuilding Resilience – Expect the Unexpected – Looking after our mental health

Our mental health and wellbeing are important. We can look after ourselves and strengthen our mental wellbeing with our tools and strategies. Knowing that we are not alone and that there are people who can help us is important too. We know that sometimes we are not okay. It’s okay not to be okay and we can talk to people to get help and support if we need it.

This animated clip tells the story of a girl called Jay who gets help to support her when her big feelings are too much for her to manage on her own. Jay gets help and support and finds out that she is not alone and lots of

people can help her.https://youtu.be/nCrjevx3-Js

Talk about what happens in the film. What are the tools or strategies that Jay uses to care for herself? Who does she talk to? Who can help and support her when she realises that she can’t manage all her feelings on her own?

If you were feeling not okay, what tools could you use to help yourself? Who could you talk to? Who could help you to look after yourself and strengthen your mental wellbeing?

You and a grown up at home could write or draw your ideas about tools that you could use and people who could help you to look after your mental health.
