Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Center
What is Cardiac Rehab?
o The Shimberg Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation Center at Florida Hospital Pepin Institute offers monitored exercise programs to patients to help recover and maintain cardiovascular fitness after a cardiac incident.
o Cardiac rehab programs provide education and counseling services to help heart patients increase physical fitness, reduce cardiac symptoms, improve health and reduce the risk of future heart problems. (American Heart Association, 2012)

Lunch Informationo Lunch is from 12:00-1:00 p.m.o Florida Hospital has a cafeteria and a deli. Food may be
purchased and eaten there.

o If you prefer, you may bring your lunch and eat in the staff workroom. The workroom has a microwave, refrigerator, and a coffee maker you may use.
How to act when at the centero Be personableo Be encouraging o Be prompt. If you are not going to be there on time you
will need to call.
What to expecto You will need to know how to do a manual blood
pressure while the client is resting and while they are exercising.
o You will be cleaning the equipment o You will be getting out the files of clients that come in.
Manual Blood Pressure Tipso Bring your stethoscope everyday o The client’s chart will tell you which size blood pressure
cuff you will need. o Make sure the patient is relaxed before taking the blood
pressure.o Support the arm so you have all the weight. o Make sure the blood pressure cuff is on tight
Difference between phase II and phase III clients o Phase II clients are the people who have recently had a
cardiac health problem. They will be hooked up to a 4 lead heart monitor while they work out and they are given instructions based on their condition on what machine to use and on what level.
o Phase III clients are previous phase II clients but decide to use the cardiac rehab center as their personal gym and to continue their healthy exercising while monitoring their heart rate and blood pressure.

Attireo School required uniform
Filingo The phase III clients come in at anytime of the day.
When they arrive, you will need to ask them their last name and pull out their chart.
o You will need to check if they are a charge and pull out their paperwork they will need for the day to record their data.
Cleaning the equipmento The equipment you will be cleaning is the heart rate
watches and belts along with the heart monitors.o You will be cleaning the equipment with Cavicide spray
Proven one minute efficacy against 26 pathogens o You also may need to restock the towels.
Warm up exercises o You are responsible for instructing the warm up
exercises.o The exercises are attachedo You are responsible for assisting and setting up exercise
equipment. o The phase II patients come in and take a class where we
can monitor them while they workout. o The classes hours are:
8:00 a.m. 9:30 a.m. 11:00 a.m. 1:30 p.m. 3:00 p.m.

Sittingo Take a deep breath in through your nose and out
through your mouth. Repeat 3 timeso Turn your head side to side 3 timeso Bring your ear toward your shoulder an back 3
timeso Bring your chin toward your chest and then look up
3 timeso Roll your shoulders 5 time forward and 5 times
backwardso Raise your leg (from the hip) 5 times for each lego Pump your ankles up and down 5 times (both
together)o Make circles with your ankles 5 times in each
direction (both together) Supine- On your back with knees bent and feet on the mat
tableo Bring one knee to your chest 5 times with each leg o Straight leg raises 5 times each leg (keep opposite
leg bent with foot on the mat table)o Place your hands across your stomach and raise
your head and shoulders off the mat (5-20 times) Standing
o Make circles with your arms 5 times forward and 5 times backwards
o Side bend to each side 3 timeso Twist from the waist 3 times each directiono (Hold onto something) Bring your leg out to the side
5 times. Repeat with opposite lego (Hold onto something) Bring your leg behind you
keeping the knee straight 5 times.
