Grade 5 – Assignment for week of (5/4 to 5/8) Beginning Earth Science: As we begin our Earth Science unit we will take a look at what planet Earth is made of. We can think of the Earth as being made of all three kinds of matter (solid, liquid, and gas). This week we will study the gas part of Earth which is called the atmosphere which extends hundreds of miles above the surface of the Earth. Science Vocabulary: Matter: Anything that has mass and takes up space Air: A kind of matter made up of different kinds of gases Atmosphere: The layers of Earth hundreds of miles tall; 80% Nitrogen 20 % Oxygen Troposphere: The layer of the atmosphere closest to the Earth; where the weather is Air Pressure: The force of the weight of the air pushing down on the Earth’s surface Altitude: The height above Earth’s surface; sea level would be zero altitude Humidity: The measure of how much water vapor is in the air Barometer: The tool that measure air pressure Task #1: Making Word Cards Using the science vocabulary, choose (5) words that you would like to make word cards for. The word card will have the word on the front and a picture of the word. You can use google images if you are not sure what the vocabulary word looks like. On the back of the word card you will write a definition or what the word means. You can use any paper and fold it into four parts. Study your word cards and have someone test you. Example: Earth
