Keywords: During observations in Orissa, India, in 1980-81, Atherigona oryzae Mall. attacked rice from the 4th week of June to the 2nd week of August, with peak abundance in the 2nd or 3rd week of July. The larvae caused 0.79-3.23% and 0.08-6.65% deadheart in Annapurna and Jaya rice, respectively. A. oryzae was the dominant tissue-boring species in young plants up to the 2nd week of August.
