King’s Lynn Embroiderers’ Guild Exhibition Special : The World in Stitches 11 th -12 th July2105 April 2015 With just three months to go before our exhibition, welcome to our Exhibition Special, with lots of information about the exhibition and details of where your help and inputs will be both needed and much appreciated. We hope that all members can get involved in one way or another. CALL FOR EXHIBITS FROM OUR CHAIR, RUTH HOLMES This year’s exhibition entitled THE WORLD IN STITCHES is beginning to gear up. We are hoping for a good showing of work from all our members. Even the tiniest piece would be wonderful. So far we are hoping to exhibit work from: Pippa’s workshop in Needle Felting (more below) Sashiko work and Covered Buttons from the Young Embroiderers The Travelling Books Jenny Furlong and Deb Matthysz are this year’s show case members (more below) Drawings from Tod’s workshop – I, like many others, went home from this mini-workshop having had a great time but with some of the drawing still to do. Please find a quiet moment to sit down and complete the pictures, and bring them in to any branch meeting, and I will start to collect them up for a display at the exhibition World textiles - if you came to Tod’s drawing mini-workshop last month you would have seen a selection of beautiful textile pieces from different parts of the world. If you have any pieces that are traditional to any country and you would be willing to lend then for a display around the walls of the exhibition room we would love to hear from you. We will also have some of Jamila’s Central Asian textiles Sketchbooks - it is always a great pleasure to look at people’s sketchbooks and see the way they develop their work. If that is the way you work and you would be willing to show it at the exhibition we would love to see it. We have Pauline 1

With just three months to go before our exhibition, welcome to our Exhibition Special, with lots of information about the exhibition and details of where your help and inputs will be both needed and much appreciated. We hope that all members can get involved in one way or another.

CALL FOR EXHIBITS FROM OUR CHAIR, RUTH HOLMES

This year’s exhibition entitled THE WORLD IN STITCHES is beginning to gear up. We are hoping for a good showing of work from all our members. Even the tiniest piece would be wonderful. So far we are hoping to exhibit work from:

Pippa’s workshop in Needle Felting (more below) Sashiko work and Covered Buttons from the Young Embroiderers The Travelling Books Jenny Furlong and Deb Matthysz are this year’s show case members (more below) Drawings from Tod’s workshop – I, like many others, went home from this mini-workshop

having had a great time but with some of the drawing still to do. Please find a quiet moment to sit down and complete the pictures, and bring them in to any branch meeting, and I will start to collect them up for a display at the exhibition

World textiles - if you came to Tod’s drawing mini-workshop last month you would have seen a selection of beautiful textile pieces from different parts of the world. If you have any pieces that are traditional to any country and you would be willing to lend then for a display around the walls of the exhibition room we would love to hear from you. We will also have some of Jamila’s Central Asian textiles

Sketchbooks - it is always a great pleasure to look at people’s sketchbooks and see the way they develop their work. If that is the way you work and you would be willing to show it at the exhibition we would love to see it. We have Pauline Wrighton giving us a talk this month and her sketchbooks are inspiring, hopefully it will give us some ideas for our own books

Round the World Stitches Postcards (to be introduced at the April Meeting)

As far as pieces of work from individuals are concerned, some of you have talked to us about your work in progress but we would really like to hear from as many people as possible about your plans, so do talk to anyone from the committee and let them know what you are hoping to contribute or to any branch member to help get ideas started.

For those of us who did Pippa’s delightful workshop in Needle Felting we all have two pieces of work that could go into the exhibition. I just need to complete my landscape and do a bit of embellishment and sort out my poor bird’s wobbly legs and I am done. Please do see if you can get your pieces ready and feel free to bring them in to any meeting and I will look after them until the exhibition. Don’t forget to fill in a form to go with any piece you hand in.

Just a couple of pictures from the felting workshop

There is a simple exhibit form with this newsletter – please give as much information as possible so that visitors can learn about your piece. The information will be used to develop the catalogue, and the insurance value, size and hanging requirements re essential for your piece to be exhibited. Please return completed forms to Jamila as soon as possible, even if the piece itself is not yet finished so that we can get ahead with planning the layout and the catalogue.

Exhibition Showcase

Here are just brief tasters of Jenny and Deb’s write up for their summer exhibition showcases. As you can see from the pictures, they are going to be a real treat. I hope this will encourage you to do a showcase in the coming years, as it is fascinating to read about other people’s textile journeys and see a range of their work.

Deb Matthysz

“Joining the King’s Lynn Embroiderer’s Guild has really helped to get me motivated. I’ve had a few pieces of work (drawings and textile art) in local exhibitions, had a few commissions and made quite a few things for family members – I really feel I am just getting started but am loving being creative and am enjoying trying out a lot of new techniques across drawing/painting and textiles.

Below are a few examples of recent “stitched” work to show a variety of my work. I do love hand embroidery which is evident from the photographs – this may be something to do with the feeling of control I have when working on a piece compared with using my sewing machine. That said I have experimented with machine embroidery and like the unpredictability of it and the speed with which a piece of work can be completed! I keep saying I must do more of it.”

Jenny Furlong

“Over the past few years I’ve stitched happily away with my textile art going into exhibitions at Blickling Hall, Sutton Hoo, Maldon and Wisbech and Fenland museum. I feel really privileged that people have even bought my work to put in their private collections. I’ve been invited to various groups to show and talk about my work and to run workshops, meeting lots of lovely people on the way. Commissions have also come my way, including making banners for Chatteris In Bloom, a wall hanging for the Town Mayor, and designing and overseeing a millennium embroidery of Chatteris, now in the community centre.”
