1. Scenario and Analysis
A. Storyboard can be found in the appendices.
B. Use the storyboard to conduct a context of use analysis for the design case:
Users: Elderly People. They are usually capable of taking the products from the shelves. Most of them cannot read small letters. Do no not know what particular codes mean. They are also easily manipulated. If a package says ”Diet Coke”, they may buy it, while the products still is unhealthy.
Stakeholders: People working at the Supermarket try to help the elderly people. They may help to take a product from a shelf, or try to read the small letters. They may also use their knowledge about a product.
C. Specify experience goals for your target group (see Ch. 1 of Interaction Design)
The interaction with the system feels:
- Impersonal
- Out of control
- Dependent
- Misleading

2.1 Conduct and analyze Pilot Interview
First, I made a draft set-up for my interview. I conducted this interview once. I asked the participant to speak his mind about the questions, in order to receive feedback. The user liked the structure. The questions were divided into categories. Also the fact that some words were in bold, was received positively by the user. Question two was not clear. The user wanted to check more options.
2. Describe for who do you do shopping in a supermarket, by checking one of the options below.______ For myself______ For someone else______ For my work_____ Other (please explain) ___________________________
I took this into consideration when discussing the interview with the 3 other students. We eventually changed it into this:
2. Describe for what purpose do you do shopping in a supermarket, by checking one options below.___ ___ Private______ Business______ Both private and business______ Other (please explain) ___________________________
Question six:
6. What would you like to know when you are in the supermarket? Check the option which applies to you most._____ Availability products_____ Prices products_____ Ingredients products_____ Other (please explain) ___________________________
Was also not clear to the user. The user assumed that this applied to before he entered the supermarket. The user wanted to know all of the information therefore we changed it into what information do you think is the most important.
6. What information do you think is the most important when you are in the supermarket? Check the option which applies to you most._____ Availability products_____ Prices products_____ Ingredients products_____ Other (please explain) ___________________________

2.2 Revise and conduct Interviews
I used the feedback I got from my pilot interview, when discussing the interview with the other students. None of the other students used such a clear structure as mine, so we decided to use it. We focused on the Physical Characteristics because we found this information especially important for our user group. Compared to my individual interview, we included more questions which had a more direct connection to the design case. We for example included many question about the information delivery. We wanted to investigate the importance of the problem we are solving. Besides that we included a very direct question:
Are you capable of distinguishing healthy and unhealthy products?
The four of us had a few questions in which we were trying to receive the same information. We compared our questions and discussed which one would be best. The question I had about the user’s sex:
9. Are you:_____ Male_____ Female
Changed into:12. What is your sex:
__ __ Male_____ Female
The question itself was more clear. This also enabled us to make one word in the sentence bold. This contributed to the clearness of the interview. The same thing happened to a question about the user’s age. My question:
11. How old are you?_____ 50-60 _____ 61-70_____ 71-80 _____ over 81
Changed into:
11. To which age category do you belong?_____ 50-60 years_____ 61-70 years_____ 71-80 years_____ over 81 years
We found this question better because, the relationship between the question and the answers was more obvious.

3.3 Conclusions and Design implications
Elderly People
General Description
Even though elderly people’s attitude and motivation are fairly low, they still are very aware of what they buy in the supermarket. They find it important to know what products (33.3 %) are available and what are the prices of these products (33.3 %). Even though they say that they are usually able to distinguish what food is healthy or not (92.3 %), 83.3 is interested in additional information about this.
Their physical characteristics are quite poor. All participants suffered with a vision problem. This means that 66.7 % has trouble reading the fine print. Half of the participants have a physical problem.
Usability Requirements
Elderly are quite experienced in doing shopping. Most of them (42.6%) knows exactly where to find the products he or she is looking for. Even though they know where to find the products, they are still interested in information. They would like to know whether a particular product is healthy or not. Most elderly people are women, which have a vision problem. The design should not contain small letters. It should also not involve more walking inside the supermarket since nearly half of the participants have difficulties walking.
4 Qualitative Design Goals
The design should enable elderly to get to know information about the products they want to buy.
The design should not contain small letters.
The design should maintain the position of the products in the shelves.
5 Week 3 Assignments
Type of Requirement: A Functional requirementDescription: The product will inform elderly about the appropriateness of the food according to their diet.Rationale: To enable the user to buy healthy food according to their diet.
11 Martijn van den Broeck | s098671
Fit Criterion: The food bought by the elderly when using the system should be more healthy than the food bought without using the system.
Type of Requirement: A Look-and-feel requirement Description: The product shall look inviting and easy to use.Rationale: Elderly people are less open minded towards new technology. Therefore, the product must look simple and invite them to use it.Fit Criterion: The product should be used by elderly without forcing them to do so.
Type of Requirement: An Ease of use requirementDescription: The product shall make it easier for elderly to determine whether food is appropriate for their diet or not.Rationale: For elderly it is important to eat healthy because they have a low resistance towards diseases.Fit Criterion: The products the elderly bought as well as the time it took, can be analyzed.
Type of Requirement: An Ease of learning requirementDescription: The product shall be used by elderly with no training.Rationale: Elderly have difficulties learning new things.Fit Criterion: The elderly should get to know the information about the products within 20 seconds.
Type of Requirement: A Performance requirementDescription: The system should be able to handle requests by multiple users simultaneously.Rationale: Multiple elderly inside the supermarket should use the system simultaneously.Fit Criterion: This can be testing by letting multiple users use the product simultaneously.
B. External cognition: Take one of your collections of virtual items (your photographs in your computer at home, your laptop or your phone, or your folder system on the harddisk or the server).
1. Describe how it is organized to support your memory.
Folder system on my hard disk. It consists of multiple layers. The files are positioned in the last layer. The layers above support the user to find the file. The user can give these a logical name. This will support him to find the file.
2. Analyze what information you need to recall in finding a particular item and what information involves recognition.
I need to recall what file I want to look up and where it is vaguely positioned. Different folder names are displayed. This enables me to recognize the folder, in which the file I am looking for is positioned.
C. Mapping, Affordance, Constraints:
1. Mapping: Suppose that you want to change the ringtone of your mobile phone. Does your phone make it easy to predict what to do; that is, is the mapping good? Support your opinion by arguments.
12 Martijn van den Broeck | s098671
On my mobile phone I go to settings. Then, I menu is displayed containing the following items:
General
Phone
Connection
Applications
I think this mapping is bad, because the difference between “general” and “phone” is small. I first navigate to “phone”, but I cannot change my ringtone here. Then, I go to “general”. A list which is displayed then, contains an item called “personalize”. Here I can find a submenu “ringtones”, which enables me to change my ringtone.
2. Affordance: Give an example of the Affordance principle for your mobile phone.
The flashlight on my mobile phone is really bright. However, I cannot turn this permanently on to use it as a pocket light. The hardware is available and I would expect it to be able but unfortunately I cannot.
3. Illustrate how the interaction with your mobile phone is supported by constraints: Give an example of a physical, a logical and a cultural constraint each.
Physical: The camera can only be used when removing the cover with a simple slide.
Logical: The phone is hold in the proper way.
Cultural: the |____| sign on my keyboard is for inserting space in a text message.
6 Reflection on Process and Outcome
I found it quite easy to gather data about the users. Once we had made a revised interview, the user could conduct it without inconvenience. I learned that it is important that the preparation is really important. This will make the actual test easier. A pity was the fact, the participants could not speak English. I had to translate the questions. I tried to avoid giving extra information when asking the question. Fortunately I did not have to explain the questions, because they were clear.
In my project (Liberation of Light), my target group is elderly people who are a member of a Reading Group in Eindhoven. This is my first project in which I am dependent on the information from the users. I have experienced that it is really hard to achieve the right data. I have for example asked the users directly for their needs. I experienced that they found it very hard to tell what they are missing.
13 Martijn van den Broeck | s098671
Because of my project, I realize how much I have learned in the last weeks because of this assignment. I would totally change my approach to the user if I would do this again. I am now aware of the importance of making a user profile. This is the basis for a successful design for a specific user. In my project, we never made a user profile. We did conduct interviews to get to know the users, but we did not analyze and summarize the data. I experienced that it is hard to design something with just the results of an interview. It is necessary to process the results in order to be able to design to the user needs.
Looking at the results I noticed that some of the answers to particular questions are excessive. The question:
1. Do you wear glasses or contact lenses?______ No
______ Yes (please describe your vision problem and correction method, for example nearsighted : contact lenses).
______ I am blind.
Could have been changed into:
1. Do you have a vision problem?______ No
______ Yes (please describe your vision problem and correction method, for example nearsighted : contact lenses).
The answer “I am blind” from the initial question is hardly ever picked. The question: “Do you have a vision problem?” would take away this answer, making the interview more clear.
Looking at the interview results, I realised that the question:
1. Describe for what purpose do you do shopping in a supermarket, by checking one options below.___ ___ Private______ Business______ Both private and business______ Other (please explain) ___________________________
Is really poor. Mainly because the target group are retired people. This makes the answer “Business” excessive. Besides that, the answer “Other (please explain)” is also unessary. Besided “Private” or “Business” there are no purposes to do shopping.
I have become more aware of how important it is to revise an interview. When the interview is conducted by a large group of people, it is important that the questions are absolutely clear so no one misunderstands them.
14 Martijn van den Broeck | s098671
I can conclude that even after revising the interview, there are still some things I would revise after I conducted the interviews. In the future, I will conduct more pilot interviews to make sure the interview is of high quality. In the project I will also analyze and summarize the data we gathered about our user. This will make it easier to design something which fits the user group.
Often, the different answers to a question are picked about evenly. This makes it hard to draw conclusions from the results. Like I expected, physical problems will be an important factor in the design. Many participants state they have a physical problem and all the participants state they have a vision problem. This means that the final design should not include small letters. I should not also involve more walking in the supermarket, since many participants state they have difficulties walking.
