Summer Term 1

Topic: ‘Greece is the word’

Welcome back after the Easter break. In the first half of the summer term, our topic based on Ancient Greece will take a combined Geography/History focus whereby children will find out:

Who were the Ancient Greeks? Learn about Ancient Greek Democracy. Discover how the Olympics began? Find out about The Battle of the Marathon and The Trojan War.

Here are some (not all) of the other areas of focus for this half term:

HOMEWORK

The Year 6’s have continued to impress me with their completion of the CGP homework books. Please remember that these books should be brought into school each day should the children need them and they most definitely need to be in school on Friday’s for when we mark them as a whole class. Please remember that it is absolutely fine for children to leave any sections which they are unsure on, nor does it matter if children make mistakes in their homework through trying.

P.E:

In P.E, we will focus on developing our dodgeball skills including throwing, catching, dodging and game-based tactics.

French:

In French this half term, children will re-cap French foods and drinks focusing on traditional French breakfasts. They will create their own descriptive paragraph about their typical breakfast experience before designing their own ‘balanced’ French themed breakfast.

English: In the lead up to SAT’s our English lessons will focus mainly on reading comprehension and recognition of GPAS. In the final few weeks of this half-term the children will use our ‘Greek’ topic as inspiration for their writing of myths! This task will involve children inventing their own mythical creatures, Gods, Goddesses and settings.

The Year 5’s have also done brilliantly with returning their alternating maths and English homework each week. Remember that team points are at stake for those who return homework promptly before the final day.

PE KIT

This half-term our P.E focus will be Dodgeball and Rounders. Please make sure that you child comes to school equipped with the correct P.E kit which adheres to school expectations: a plain white t-shirt and navy or black shorts/tracksuit bottoms, and trainers. As the weather cools, I would advise that children have a tracksuit top/hooded jacket to layer on top of their white t-shirt, which again is either plain navy or black.

To avoid clothing going missing, please label your child’s PE kit and school uniform where possible.

LIBRARY - Children will be able to change library books (if needed) on Wednesday. If your child’s library book is ready to be changed can you please ensure that they have it with them in school at this time. Please be aware that children are allowed to keep the same library book for a maximum of 2 weeks.

WATER BOTTLES - Please be advised that children are allowed to bring a water bottle to school to keep in the classroom. Bottles must contain water only, and it would be greatly appreciated if your child’s bottle is labelled to avoid loss.
