Christmas 2019

Fáilte is fiche chuig Nuachlitir na Nollag 2019. We are fast approaching the end of what has been a very busy and productive term. As you read through the newsletter, you will see just how busy we have been. Our Board of Management, Parent’s Association, Student’s Council, Teachers, after-school facilitators, Margaret our secretary and Seán our caretaker have worked really hard this term and I wish to thank them all for their great efforts. I also wish to thank everybody involved in our school community and parish for their continued support.

Christmas is a very special time of year in our school and for all our families. It is a time for

each other and for caring and sharing.On behalf of everyone here in Loreto National

School, I wish you and your families a very happy and safe Christmas and we look forward to

welcoming you all back here in 2020.

Christmas shoebox appeal;


Pupils and staff, along with their families put together Christmas Boxes filling them with toys and everyday goods which we sometimes take for granted. The response was amazing and everybody got on-board. We received over 80 boxes. We really appreciate the huge effort that everybody made. These gifts were transported to countries like Albania just in time for Christmas. Thanks to everybody for making this wonderful project possible.

Halloween dress-up:We had some spooky visitors to our school during Halloween!! We all dressed up in aid of Temple Street Children’s Hospital!


Parent Teacher Meetings:

GAA;


We held our parent-teacher meetings in the school in the middle of November. Thank you to all parents for making the effort to attend. Please remember that if you every wish to discuss your child’s education, do not hesitate to contact us.

Thanks to Mr. Vince Cooper for attending the school during the term and doing some GAA skills with our school. His dedication is greatly appreciated and we look forward to welcoming him back here again in the new year.

Book Fair;


A book fair was held in the school on Monday and Tuesday, November 18th and 19th of November. Thank you to everybody for the huge support . It enabled us to upgrade our school libraries to the value of over €900. Thanks also to our parent’s association for organising volunteers to help out.

Muckross Lotto;Our School has been facilitating the Muckross Lotto. This is a great local initiative and also a great fundraiser for our school. Thank you to all the parent’s who continue to support it and to all the winners from our school!!Science Week; Our school took part in science week this year. There were some wonderful experiments going on throughout the school.


Holy Communion and Confirmation:Holy Communion will be held on Saturday May 23rd 2020 and our Confirmation is on Friday March 20th 2020

Christmas in Killarney: Loreto National School were very well represented by pupils, teachers and parents at the recent Christmas Parade. The pupils really got into the spirit of it all. It was a very enjoyable evening!


Creative Cluster;5 th and 6 th Class are involved in a creative cluster with three other schools in Kerry. They are working hard on a project which includes art, music and movie making!It makes for an exciting 2020.


Tick kitsPupils representing the student council of Scoil Bhríde, Loreto National School were invited to give a presentation to the Healthcare Trainee Class in Fitzgerald’s Stadium, Killarney on Wednesday 11th December. The pupils prepared a powerpoint presentation in which they spoke about the prevalence of Lyme’s Disease in the Killarney area and the history behind the school’s Junior Entrepreneur project entitled ‘Tick Kits’ in 2018 for which the school was awarded the title of ‘Community Champions’. The pupils answered questions about the project and distributed Tick Kits to all present. The ‘Tick Kit’ aims to make everyone more aware of what a tick is, how to remove it safely and precautions to be taken. The school is still working to spread awareness of Lyme’s disease and Tick Kits are available to purchase from the school.

Christmas Jumper appeal; On December 6th, Loreto National School really got into the


Christmas Spirit in aid of St. Vincent de Paul. Staff and pupils wore their brightest Christmas jumpers and donated €2 to this great cause. We raised over €200 and this was presented to Michelle and Tim from the Killarney St. Vincent de Paul. It is important to think of those less fortunate especially at this time of year so thank you to everybody for supporting this great cause.

Christmas Concert and bake sale;Wednesday, 18th December was a day which stands out for us all in here in Loreto. We held our Cake-sale, Coffee morning and Christmas Concert. If people were not in the Christmas mood when they came, they certainly were when they were leaving. There was some amazing baking by both pupils and parents delivered to our school on Wednesday morning. Pupils were delighted to attend and sample some of the


beautiful baking. This was followed by a coffee morning for parents and families. The day culminated with our wonderful performances of some traditional Christmas songs and some modern hits!!!. We also had a wonderful display of instrumental music. Thanks to our Parent’s Association for helping on the day with teas and coffees and for providing some lovely hampers which were raffled on the day. Thanks to all who donated prizes and all the staff in the school for making the day possible!!


Board Game Club; New Board game club began recently. It runs in the morning time from 8.30am-9.00am. Look at all the skills they develop!!!!Social skills: following rules, making new friends, bonding with peers, developing a sense of fair-play, turn-taking, working as a team, cooperation, communication, enjoyment of the games.Educational skills: reasoning, detecting patterns, oral language, predicting, planning ahead, literacy skills, numeracy skills, organisation skills, etc.
