10 minutes to start class.
Stephanie Shultz, 02/22/14,
2 min to complete. 3 min to review. Remind scholars that they should think about the criteria listed above? Does it require a lengthy explanation? Will it have more than one correct answer? (emphasize this)CC: Scholars to read what they have written. CC: Scholar to explain why answer choice 1 is not a good research question. Answer: Choice 2 is stronger because it requires a lengthy explanation and people could have different ideas about why he deserved it. It also makes me asks more questions. What acts did MLK do that were deserving of the peace prize? Etc. Choice one can be answered in probably a few sentences., and there is porbably only one answer.

CC: students to read each step.

Not a paragraph but an entire essay!

Hook: Today we are beginning our unit on research paper. Who here has heard of research papers? Maybe your siblings have written one. You have heard a teacher talk about it?A research paper is a paper that is produced after you have done extensive research on a certain topic/issue and you have analyzed what many different reliable sources have said about that issue. Today, we will focus on the very first thing that one must have before they begin writing a research paper and that is a question. More specifically, a research question.

Try It Out!Directions: While you are watching the next video, write down questions that you begin thinking.

Question 1Question 2Question 3Question 4Question 5Question 6

Directions : Circle one question from above that you think would make a great research question. Use the checklist below to make sure it meets the right criteria. If you need to edit the question to make it strong, that is OK!

Research Question Criteria☐ It requires a longer explanation☐ It is open ended (has more than one

correct answer)☐ It can lead to many more questions

Directions: Share your research question with you shoulder partner. As a team, decide which question you will present to Ms. Shultz. Again, use the checklist to make sure you have a strong research question. When you have your questions, put up a thumb to be checked.

Stephanie Shultz, 02/22/14,
Explain to teams that I want them to compare their research questions. They should use the criteria to decide which question is better. It is not a contest- this is just to help you really think about what makes a strong research question. 3 minutes to deliberate. Thumb up so I can check your answer. If I check you off, you can move to showtime. Pull students back if I see a lot of the same problem:Too specific, close-ended. What is wrong with this question? How can I improve it? Do you think this will have multiple correct answers?Would this only take a couple of sentences to answer?Show Call strong answers and award merits one everyone is finished. Ask scholars why it is strong?
Stephanie Shultz, 02/22/14,
One minute to choose their question and edit it.
Stephanie Shultz, 02/22/14,
I tell them a non example before giving them one minute to choose their question and edit it. Non-example: What is a sustainable material? CC: Why is this a non-example? (could be answered in a few questions. Probably has only one correct answer)Example: Why is it important to build sustainable homes.
Stephanie Shultz, 02/22/14,
15 minutes to complete Try It OutI explain that the best way to think of research questions is to do some basic research on a topic that is interesting to you. When I was in college, this video was posted to facebook and it made me think a million questions. I want you all to watch it and write down questions that come to your mind. Remember to think of questions that would require lengthier explanations!CC: What are you about to do, before we begin the video. Goal here is to have students try it out on their own- and they will most likely have some struggles. I will get to circulate to see what the major struggles they are having (too specific and closed-ended questions are probably going to be major struggling points.)

SHOWTIMEDirections: Read the following article. While you are reading, write down questions that

you begin thinking. Then, create a research question that fits the criteria we have discussed.

Stephanie Shultz, 02/22/14,
Tell students they can put a thumb up for me to check their work. If I am with another student, they should keep working or read AR book.
Stephanie Shultz, 02/22/14,
Questions should be not about specific parts like “what does the keyboard do” should be broader questions about technology. I will challenge answers like “how does the internet work” because even thought it requires a lot of info, it is not debatable. Point this out to students making this mistake. Strong questions: Why is technology advancing so rapidly now? Why is it important to expand the internet? Is it a good thing that we are all so connected? etc
Stephanie Shultz, 02/22/14,
They can tear off this page so it is separate from their packet. They will have until 20 minutes left to complete this assignment Remember to CC questions about what they are about to do.

15 minutes to view presentation and complete exit ticket. Show Presentation to students. After I am done, they have the remaining amount of the 15 minutes to complete the Exit ticket. Remind them that they do not have to fill in all question blanks. Students should be asking. Why is it so controversial? How will AMP help people? How will it effect Nashville? Etc. As I take exit tickets up, explain that this will be what we are working on. Will look up different websites, facebook pages, newspaper articles, etc to figure out what is going on!5 minutes to wrap up class.
