Home learning for Year: Six Week Beginning: Monday 22 nd June 2020 Spelling: This week we would like you to revise the use of hyphens. These are used ( - ) to join words to indicate that they have a combined meaning or that they are linked in the grammar of a sentence, for example: rock-forming minerals. We would like you to go on this website: https://spellingframe.co.uk/spelling-rule/37/44-Use-of-the-hyphen Work through some of the games and tasks, looking at the different word endings. Spelling: This week we would like you to revise the use of hyphens. These are used ( - ) to join words to indicate that they have a combined meaning or that they are linked in the grammar of a sentence, for example: rock-forming minerals.

We would like you to go on this website: https://spellingframe.co.uk/spelling-rule/37/44-Use-of-the-hyphen

Work through some of the games and tasks, looking at the different word endings. Please make a note of any spelling rules, as these are important!

Once you are confident, have a go at some of the practise games and tests! https://spellingframe.co.uk/spelling-rule/37/44-Use-of-the-hyphen

Why not have a go at practising some of these words using the spelling strategies that we sent out a few weeks ago? Can you create a way of helping you to remember when to use a hyphen?

Reading:

Task 1

Task 2As part of your main reading task this week, we would like you to continue exploring different inspirational people. We have given you a reading comprehension which explores the life of Martin Luther King Jr. Please read through the text carefully and then answer the attached questions about the text.

Remember to continue to read at home. You can read alone, to parents or to anyone in your house!

Read the following extract about the picture and have a go at answering the following questions:

He had only been away for a short time.

Upon returning to his home-town, Jake found that it was no longer there: something terrible had happened. After eventually locating his house (it had moved several hundred miles from its previous location) Jake stood on top of it and surveyed the calamitous scene around him. What could have caused such a thing to happen?

Can you continue the story? You could write a flashback, describing what happened to the town, or write about how Jake tries to solve the mystery.

What do you think caused this event to happen?None of the houses appear broken or damaged. What does this suggest to you?Are there still people inside the houses? If you were Jake, how would you manage to save them? How is it that the lights are still on?

Why not have a go at creating your own word ladder for someone to solve?

English and Grammar:GrammarThis week for Grammar we thought it would be a good opportunity for you to revise the different word types, such as adjectives, similes, verbs, adverbs, etc.

Please watch the following YouTube clips to recap the different word types (they are all MC Grammar)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldeqKZvBpNs https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9bXWY1nioE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caxLA9HWQ5M https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cfenLGAYDeg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p_1JE12xa18 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prb1Vuu_m4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=2&v=MDpdCbct-4U&feature=emb_title

Once you have watched the videos, please have a go at the Grammar activity.

EnglishFor your English work this week, we would like you to look at our new theme ‘Inspirational People’. We thought it would be a great opportunity to explore Nelson Mandela, who was a tireless campaigner for equality and justice.

In order to start planning our biography, you need to gather information about who he is and what he did. Please have a look at the following information and take notes using bullet points. Please ensure you focus on the main points to ensure your biography is informative and interesting to read. You may want to turn your notes into a time line, just like we did when writing about Charles Darwin!

https://safeyoutube.net/w/rcuJhttps://www.theschoolrun.com/homework-help/nelson-mandela https://www.natgeokids.com/uk/discover/history/general-history/nelson-mandela/ https://kids.kiddle.co/Nelson_Mandela

You may also want to do your own research, however the links above are a good place for you to start!

Tuesday (Plan)Once you have completed enough research and have taken enough notes about Nelson Mandela, it is time to start planning your biography.

Use your timeline/notes to help you. You need to think about turning these into a boxed-up plan. Consider the following points to help you:

What part is going in the beginning bit?Which parts are going to go in the middle sections?End paragraph?

You may want to use significant dates/events to help structure your biographies (early life, significant events, later life, death).

Wednesday and Thursday (Write)Once you have planned your biography, please spend some time writing it up. Make sure your biographies are factual but keep it interesting. Do you need to write about everything? We don’t just want a list of facts!!!

Don’t forget about your non-negotiables. This includes all of your punctuation!

Friday (Edit)Please spend some time editing your work, using the editing poster below to help! This is the poster we have displayed in our classroom. Don’t worry if you don’t have access to a green paper. Choose a different colour if you can, or use the pen you have written in.

- Read backwards to check for spellings- Spelling corrections are written 3 times under your writing- Read forwards, does your writing make sense?- Read forwards to check for punctuation and capital letters- Read forwards – one final check- Now start your self-assessment using the success criteria

Finally write your next step.

Maths:This week’s maths is a little bit different. We would like to give you the opportunity to apply lots of your maths skills to a variety of problems! These are story-based problems, which we would like you to have a go completing throughout the week.

Monday and Tuesday (Escape Room)You have been helping your teacher to tidy up the sports equipment after a P.E. lesson. You hear a loud bang and turn around to find that you have been accidentally locked in the school hall!

Solve the clues and puzzles and reveal the keypad code needed to open the door. Good luck!

Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (Plan a Summer Music Festival)For the rest of this week, we would like you to spend some time planning a music festival! This will require you to apply a lot of your Maths skills that you have developed over the last few years at Queensway. Follow the activity pack and the instructions on the PowerPoints, which should guide you through the design of your own music festival. You can always share what you have created on the class blog!

You completed the first two a couple of weeks back, so should be quite familiar with them. These would be great activities for you to complete with your parents/older brothers and sisters. As the transition to your new school approaches, please make sure you are talking it through with the people who are closest to you. Remember, you can always post on the blog, ask questions when Mrs Bridges or Miss Hoffman ring you, or ask questions in school.

10 top tips for staying safe on the internet

1)      Don’t post any personal information online – like your full name, email address, mobile number, etc.

2)      Think carefully before posting pictures or videos of yourself.  Once you’ve put a picture of yourself online, most people can see it and may be able to download it, it’s not just yours anymore.

3)      Keep your privacy settings as high as possible!

4)      Never give out your passwords.

5)      Don’t befriend people you don’t know.

6)      Don’t meet up with people you’ve met online.  Speak to your parent or carer about people suggesting you do.

7)      Remember that not everyone online is who they say they are.

8)      Think carefully about what you say before you post something online.

9)      Respect other people’s views, even if you don’t agree with someone else’s views doesn’t mean you need to be rude.

10)   If you see something online that makes you feel uncomfortable, unsafe or worried: leave the website, turn off your computer if you want to and tell a trusted adult immediately.
