Father's Story Week 2013 at Everton Nursery

School and Family Centre took place during the

week Monday 10th to Friday 14th June.

There were a range of events held across

Cresswell and Spencer to promote parents and

    carers, espacially dads, brothers, grandads,

uncles and a variety of other male carers and

role models to engage with the children.

Parents and carers were invited into the classrooms to engage alongside children, and many

books and storysacks were shared, much to the children's delight. Matthew Farrell led an

e-book workshop for parents/carers and their children to engage adults and children to

work together to create their own e-book with words, pictures and sounds using our school

iPads. These, and other e-books the children have created, can all be accessed via weblinks.

On the Thursday, some children were also involved in a visit to

the new Central Liverpool Library to explore the children's

library area and get their own library cards! We hope this

fosters a love of books and reading.

Did you know that Everton Nursery School

and Family Centre has a page on Facebookand also a twitter account?

On Facebook search for Everton Nursery

School and Family Centre or Twitter search

    for EvertonNursery.

We have used Twitter to share our

    childrens experiences throughout the

    school year.

Caryl Hart is the author of How to Grow A

Dinosaur. Children in Cresswell were very

excited about her book so we tweeted her

a picture of photographs taken by children

    and she replied!

    Social Networking

Twitter is a great way for our setting to share our childrens work across the world.

All School leavers from Spencer andCresswell were invited along with their

    Our ExhibitionOn Monday 10th

    June 2013 some

    children from

    Cresswell and

    Spencer wentwith their

families to celebrate the opening of Our

Exhibition at Tate Liverpool. This was a

fantastic event that enabled parents to learn

about all of the exciting work that children

have been involved in over the past eight

    months.

The interactive exhibition was designed in a

fun and creative way which excited children

and their families to engage with artists and

    modern and contemporary artwork. Our

work with the Tate has been inspirational

and we have been astonished by the high

levels of involvement children have shown as

they have explored a number of exhibitions

    and engaged with artists.

We are currently evaluating this process and

making plans to continue our collaborative

working with the Tate Liverpool for

    September 2013.

In May we received a phone call and learnt that

Everton Nursery School and Family Centre had

been awarded Eco Schools Ambassador status.

Ambassador schools are leaders who are the

    forefront of the Eco-Communities Campaign.

Eco Schools have acknowledged the Inspirational

Leadership at Everton Nursery School and Family

    Centre.

You may have also noticed our new green flag to

celebrate our award and the plaque at the front

    door.

    Our Solar Panels have

    been busy with the

    recent sunny weather

    turning the suns energy

    into mains electricity.

    Each month in 2013 has

    seen an increase in

    electricity produced.

3.21 MWh were produced in June compared to 2.88MWh in May. Will

July be another record breaking month?

    Summer is the warm

    season. The English word

    comes from the Old English

    sumor and derives from the

    Indo-European root sem- which

    also produced the Sanskrit sama,

    meaning half year.

    When UV radiation

damages the DNA in your skin

cells, your body tries to repair the

damage. The blood vessels in the

local area swell, allowing blood to rush

into it. This is why sunburn looks red.

Blood inside your body is also hot,

which is why it feels likesunburns give off heat.

You can still get sun burnt if

    you're under water. When swimming

or snorkelling in the sun, it's best to wear

clothing that covers your arms, back and

    upper thighs and wear waterproof

    sunscreen on all exposed areas.

    Remember to reapply

    sunscreen regularly.

    Every Wednesday during summer.

    1.30pm-4.30pm a range of family

    activities.

Summer is a great time to start a new outdoor hobby. So why not

    try cycling?

Liverpool City Council has a series of initiatives which enables

    people to cycle.

    1. A new cycle hire scheme is being launched. From 9th -17th July

there will be free trials available on Mount Pleasant and St Pauls

    Square, see http://www.liverpoolexpress.co.uk/2013/07/08/tell-

    us-which-bike-you-like/ for more info.

    2. Contact Bike Right on 0151 482 5706. Bike Right host a range of community bike

rides and are able to loan bikes to local parents/carers. Bike Right will also be in Everton

Park every Wednesday throughout this summer.

    3. Staff at Everton Nursery School and Family Centre have access to cycle storage and

washing facilities. 3 staff now cycle to work on a regular basis.

Kate Doolan and Matthew Farrell have also recently taken part

    in the Liverpool-Chester-Liverpool cycle.

They are just two of the staff who have taken up the cycle2work

scheme with many more set to follow their example in July.10

We have 10 new parent volunteers who have put their names

forward for supporting local families with children under five.

Some of their work will involve helping families across

Liverpool to apply for the FREE 2 year nursery places, as well

as supporting in the community or nursery. Our new Parent

Champions are taking part in training and support to become

volunteers. They have attended an Open Day on 10th July to

learn more about becoming a Parent Champion. Parent

Champions can offer as much are as little time to volunteer as

possible from one hour per week to as much as they can do.

If you are interested in becoming a Parent Champion and you have some time to offer, please come and see Andrea Vaughan, (Early Intervention Coordinater) at Everton

Nursery School and Family Centre. There may be extra funding available for those parents

wishing to volunteer their time and need childcare.

Ihave enjoyed being an NQT at Everton,

    Ifeel

Ihave gained valuableexperience and received all the support I've needed to further my learning

    as a newly qualified teacher.

I have really enjoyed being part of the teaching team and working along-

side such wonderful early years practitioners. Teaching Spencer One

children and watching them grow and develop has also been a very

    enjoyable experience!

Katy Curry and Faye OConnor have both be in

role as New Qualified Teachers (NQT) at Everton

Nursery School and Family Centre. Here are their

    comments about being an NQT.

I never expected the year to go as fast as it has, I can't quite believe my

NQT year here at Everton is almost complete. I've had great support from

all the staff here, they really helped me to settle in and become a part of

    the team.

Having my own class of children has definitely been the most enjoyable

part of the year! Cresswell One have been a fantastic class and watching

them learn and develop over the last academic year has been the mostrewarding experience. I'm looking forward to the next academic year and

would like to wish all the school leavers lots of luck in their new schools!
