We say that Jesus is the light of the world, but Jesus said that YOU are the light of the world! With our new sign going up on Central Boulevard and the renovation of the Guyton Depot nearly complete, we are about to become very visible in this community. We cannot be hidden. We are that city on a hill!

What will we do with this new visibility? “In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” We haven’t exact-ly been hiding, but we also haven’t been making a lot of noise. We have been quietly serving this community for 200 years! Our light shines bright, but you have to know where to look. With the new sign, the new meeting hall, and new ministries, we are about to set our light high on a lampstand for Guyton and Effingham County.

Our Sunday morning service, Sunday evening singalong, active children and youth pro-grams, and massive food bank are bright lights in the community. We are about to put those lights on a very tall lampstand. Are we ready to draw more people to our church? Are we pre-pared to be more visible, to draw more attention to our ministries?

Disciples of Christ churches are notorious for working behind the scenes, out of the spotlight, content to promote the ministries of others. Clearly, we want something more for Guyton Christian Church. A quiet little church that wants to stay little doesn’t erect big signs and renovate big buildings. It looks like we’re planning to grow! It looks like we’re planning to serve more people with more ministries.

Some of us may not be ready for this attention. Some of us might want to stay in the shadows, but Jesus wants our lights to shine bright! After all, this is not self-promotion; we’re lifting high the name of Jesus! We’re not just telling the Good News; we’re showing the world what a difference it makes. goal is to make sure they know that the fuss is about Jesus and the Amazing Grace that God has for us through Him.

“Keep on loving each other as brothers and sisters. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by doing so some people have entertained angels without knowing it.” (Hebrews 13:1-2) In my view, “having church” means loving each other, lavishly and with grace. It means treating every visitor as an honored guest and a member of the family. It means reaching out to our neighbors, inviting them to the banquet.

As the Church, we are more than keepers of the flame. Our goal is to set the world on fire for Christ, starting in our little corner of the world. Our goal is to accept our Christ-given role as the light of the world, to set that light high on a lampstand, and to give that light to everyone in our community.

You are the light of the world. Your church leaders are building a big new lampstand. Set your lights on it, and let your little light shine!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Joel

I just got back from World Changers and boy are my arms tired. And legs. And

everything else.

In all seriousness, this year’s Youth Group summer mission trip was a truly amazing experience. Getting to see the Lord at work in the lives of our youth and teens from across the nation was quite possibly the most uplifting thing I’ve witnessed since being called into Youth Ministry. The theme of the week’s lessons and devotions was “Uncharted” and we took a unique look at the life and mission of Moses. It’s interesting how the theme and the story matched up with each other, as Un-charted means unfamiliar, but Moses is one of the better-known characters in the Bible. Yet for each chap-ter in the story, he had no idea what was around the corner for him, and in similar circumstances, I believe many of us would do what we could to stay out of it. We might pick a quiet life without all of that uncertain-ty and danger. Moses, however, trusted God, and followed Him to lead the nation of Israel out of captivity. Beyond and underneath and through this Uncharted theme, though, was a question that kept coming up: “Why are we/you here?” This was a question with as many answers as there were people involved. For Joel and Dawn Dramis, the couple in charge of the whole operation, they were there because they lived close-by, and had been working with World Changers for over 20 years in this community and had grown such a love for the people of Ft. Pierce that they could scarcely do anything else. For Allen Altvater, the Project Coordinator, he had developed such a love for Joel and Dawn in particular, as well as the community in general, that he felt hon-ored and delighted to serve. Some of the kids from other churches were there because their parents made them go. Some were there because their church had been going for years and they wanted to see what all of the fuss was about. Some had been before and were eager to go back. For me, I was there to facilitate our teens having a spiritual experience like what I had when I was their age. I believe that God accomplished that, but it’s clear looking back that, the Lord had plans to grow me in my faith as well.

It quickly became apparent that, whatever we thought we were doing in Ft. Pierce at first, God was working out His own plans through us, just like Moses. Now, that I’ve returned home, I’ve prayed that God would show me anew why he’s brought me to this church. I’ve learned that, no matter how nice my plans might be, God can supersede them or work through and beyond and past them to accomplish something that we might never otherwise believe possible. It’s been a few months since we last had someone give their elevator-testimony for why they love this church. But this month, as you pray, I’d like to ask you to re-flect on that. You might think you’re here because this is the church you grew up in. Your parents went to this church and their parents, straight on back to the founding. Or you might think you’re here because a friend invited you and you liked the traditional service. You might personally have any number of reasons for your membership in this church. But whatever your reasons might be, God has His own reasons. We are all the hands and feet of Jesus as members of His church, and I encourage you to ask God to reveal to you His plans for your service in this church. He will gladly show you, and trust me: it’s going to be more amazing than you can possibly imagine. For Christ and His Kingdom
