Sermon Noah and the Ark Rev. Jamie Armstrong Of all the stories in the opening chapters of Genesis, the story of Noah’s Ark is most often read as a children’s story. It is depicted in art in calming pastel colors, as a sort of delightful adventure as we board the giant boat with Noah for a cruise with all those animals, ending with a beautiful rainbow that stretches across the sky. But for the writers of Genesis, this was not a delightful children’s story, but a very “grown-up” and serious story about crime and punishment and the cataclysmic destruction of the world. The waters of chaos that covered the face earth in the beginning are unleashed and chaos reigns again as the waters cover the deep.

Almost every ancient culture tells stories of floods that covered the earth, often survived by only one man and his family. So the plot line of the Noah story is not unique, but the Hebrew story is unique in its understanding of God. Most pagan gods were all too human – jealous, lustful and violent – but the holy God of Genesis grieves when people chose to live evil, hurtful lives.

In many of the other ancient stories, survivors were almost “accidental,” but not so with Noah. God seeks Noah out and makes provisions for Noah and his family and for the animals who will survive the great flood. Why Noah? Because Noah was a righteous man, living in an unrighteous time, yet he was able to make good choices, instead of succumbing to the wicked ideas of his day. It is always hard to be righteous and countercultural. It is as difficult now as it was then to choose God, and to stick with God, no matter what.

Church-wide Lenten Worship and Study Series

Join us for TAKE THE FLAG a worship and study series based on seven flags used

in auto racing. First UMC is going to use this series as a church-wide Lenten

study, in Sunday school classes, small group meetings during the week (both at the

church and off campus), Sunday evening youth meetings, and children’s classes.

The purpose of TAKE THE FLAG is not to turn us into race fans, but to become

stronger disciples of Jesus Christ by paying attention to the signs God gives us

each day. Pastor Jamie will preach a sermon series for Lent and Easter that

parallels the lessons being learned. Together, we’ll read the book, watch the DVD

segment and discuss ways God signals us in our race of faith. You don’t have to be

a fan or know anything about auto racing, the flags are used as metaphors for how

God can and does speak with us in everyday life.

This series was written by pastor Rob Fuquay, our guest minister

during 2016 Mayme Weaver Preaching Mission. Copies of Rob’s

book are available in the church office at $8 each, or for your

Kindle device from Amazon.
