Memorial Day, an American holiday observed on the last Monday of May,

honors men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Origi-

nally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil

War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans ob-

serve Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family

gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, at least, it marks the

beginning of summer.

The Civil War claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history, requiring

the establishment of the country’s first national cemeteries. By the late

1860s Americans in various towns and cities had begun holding springtime

tributes to these countless fallen soldiers, decorating their graves with flow-

ers and reciting prayers. It is unclear where exactly this tradition originated;

numerous different communities may have independently initiated the me-

morial gatherings. Nevertheless, in 1966 the federal government declared

Waterloo, New York, the official birthplace of Memorial Day. Waterloo—

which had first celebrated the day on May 5, 1866—was chosen because it

hosted an annual, community-wide event, during which businesses closed

and residents decorated the graves of soldiers with flowers and flags.

On May 5, 1868, General John A. Logan, leader of an organization for

Northern Civil War veterans, called for a nationwide day of remembrance

later that month. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of

strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who

died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies

now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he

proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen be-

cause it wasn’t the anniversary of

any particular battle.

On the first Decoration Day, Gen-

eral James Garfield made a

speech at Arlington National Cem-

etery, and 5,000 participants deco-

rated the graves of the 20,000 Un-

ion and Confederate soldiers bur-

ied there. Many Northern states held similar commemorative events and re-

prised the tradition in subsequent years; by 1890 each one had made Deco-

ration Day an official state holiday. Many Southern states, on the other hand,

continued to honor their dead on separate days until after World War I.

Memorial Day, as Decoration Day gradually came to be known, originally

honored only those lost while fighting in the Civil War. But during World War I

the United States found itself embroiled in another major conflict, and the

holiday evolved to commemorate American military personnel who died in all

wars.

For decades, Memorial Day continued to be observed on May 30, the date

Logan had selected for the first Decoration Day. But in 1968 Congress

passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as

the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal

employees; the change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared

Memorial Day a federal holiday.

Cities and towns across the United States host Memorial Day parades each

year, often incorporating military personnel and members of veterans’ organi-

zations. Some of the largest parades take place in Chicago, New York

and Washington, D.C. Americans also observe Memorial Day by visiting

cemeteries and memorials. On a less somber note, many people throw par-

ties and barbecues on the holiday, perhaps because it unofficially marks the

beginning of summer.

Faith

We're a rugged breed, us quads. If we weren't, we wouldn't be around

today. Yes, we're a rugged breed. In many ways, we've been blessed

with a savvy and spirit that isn't given to everybody.

And let me say that this refusal of total or full acceptance of one's

disability all hooks up with one thing-faith, an almost divine faith.

Down in the reception room of the Institute of Physical Medicine and

Rehabilitation, over on the East River at 400 East 34th Street in New

York City, there's a bronze plaque that's riveted to the wall. During the

months of coming back to the Institute for treatment — two or three

times a week — I rolled through that reception room many times, coming

and going. But I never quite made the time to pull over to one side and

read the words on that plaque that were written, it's said, by an unknown

Confederate soldier. Then one afternoon, I did. I read it and then I read

it again. When I finished it for the second time, I was near to bursting —

not in despair, but with an inner glow that had me straining to grip the

arms of my wheelchair. I'd like to share it with you

A Creed For Those Who Have Suffered

I asked God for strength, that I might achieve.

I was made weak, that I might learn humbly to obey ...

I asked for health, that I might do great things.

I was given infirmity, that I might do better things ...

I asked for riches, that I might be happy.

I was given poverty, that I might be wise ...

I asked for power, that I might have the praise of men.

I was given weakness, that I might feel the need of God ...

I asked for all things, that I might enjoy life.

I was given life, that I might enjoy all things ...

I got nothing I asked for — but everything I had hoped for. Almost

despite myself, my unspoken prayers were answered.

I am, among men, most richly blessed!

A True Angel by George W. Zellars

A mother is special, she's more than a friend.

Whenever you need her, she'll give you a hand.

She'll lead you and guide you in all that you do.

Try all that she can just to see you get through.

Good times and bad times, she's there for it all.

Say head up, be proud, and always stand tall.

She'll love you through quarrels and even big fights,

or heart to heart chats on cold lonely nights.

My mother's the greatest that I've ever known,

I think God made my mother like He'd make his own.

A praiser, a helper, an encourager too,

nothing in this world that she wouldn't do.

To help us succeed she does all that she can,

raised a young boy now into a man.

I want to say thank you for all that you do,

please always know mom, that I love you.

I Don't Want To Go To Church! A mother went to wake her son for church one Sunday morning. When she knocked on his door, he said, "I'm not going!" "Why not?" asked his mother. "I'll give you two good reasons," he said. "One, they don't like me. Two, I don't like them." His mother replied, "I'll give you two good reasons why YOU WILL go to church. One, you're 47 years old. Two, you're the pastor!" One day, a teacher was talking to her first grade class about whales when a little girl had a question. Little Girl: "Do whales swallow people?" Teacher: "No, even though they are much bigger than a person, they have throat pleats that filter their food of krill and plankton. Little Girl: "But the Bible says Jonah was swallowed by a whale." Teacher getting angry: "Blue whales cannot swallow people." Little Girl: "Well, when I get to heaven I'll just ask Jonah if he was really swallowed by a whale." Teacher, still red with anger: "What if Jonah went to hell?" Girl: "Well, then you can ask him." Men are stupid. The main reason women are crazy is that men are stupid. God made man before woman so the man would have time to think of an answer for the woman's first question. Married men should forget their mistakes. There is no need for two people to remember the same thing. A little boy watched, fascinated, as his mother covered her face in cold cream. "Why do you do that?" he asked. "To make myself beautiful." When she began to rub it off, the boy asked, "Why are you doing that? Did you give up?"

Clorine Lawson 100th Birthday Celebration

She was born on April 7 1917 to Ina Chloe Norman Jones and Levi Leonard Jones . This was one day after World

War 1 began in the United States. She wrote her favorite childhood memories in a booklet entitled “ Memories of

Childhood.” The great economic depression of the 1920’and 1930’s influenced a lot of her early life. She graduated

from Temple Hill High School in 1936 as the class Valedictorian . On Thanksgiving Day November 25, 1937 she was

married to Bobby Lee Lawson. They were married for 60 years. They are blessed with 5 daughters and 12 grandchil-

dren 28 great grandchildren and 7 great great grandchildren. Clorine began LPN school in Glasgow in 1966. She took

her state board test for her LPN license and made the highest score to have been obtained on that test. She worked at

TJ Samson until 1982 . She has kept a diary from age of 13 years until recent years. She would like most to be re-

membered as being a caring Christian lady.

Why do people get white hair?

Each strand of hair is made by a part of the skin called a hair follicle. The color of the hair comes from a chemical called melanin. The follicle adds melanin as it makes the hair. For many of us, the hair follicles stop making melanin as we age. Hair looks white or gray because of the lack of added color
