The Problem: Substance Abuse is Causing a Health Epidemic
• Illicit drug use increased from 2.7% in 2002 to 6.3% in 2011
• Drug use in adults 65 + projected to skyrocket from 40 million in 2010 to 73 million in
2030
• The number of adults who need treatment compared to public treatment capacity in
Utah has a ratio of nearly 5:1
• Utah Division of Substance Abuse & Mental Health Annual Report
Estimated 600 billion dollars spent annually
on untreated Alcohol and Drug Abuse
• Utah Violent Crime Driven by Uptick in Heroin Use; Salt Lake Tribune,
September 4, 2014
• 4 major treatment providers in Salt Lake City at nearly 100% occupancy
with a 5-6 month wait
• 8 out of 10 offences at admission to prison correlate to substance use disorder
Effects of Drug Abuse In Utah
A High Price for Veterans
• Male veterans under 30 saw a 44 percent increase in the rate of suicides from 2009-2011
• Of the 22 deaths a day, only 5 are receiving treatment through our health system
• 60%-80% of those with PTSD require substance abuse treatment
• Traumatic brain injury increases vulnerability to substance abuse
• Opioid addiction increases after exposure to opiate medications for the treatment of chronic pain
What’s Working
Addictions Treatment is Effective: Over 600 Scientific Papers conclude that Substance Use Disorder Treatment is Effective (Marwick)
Relapse Rates for treatment for alcohol, opiates and cocaine are less than those for hypertension, asthma, and equivalent to those for diabetes –all chronic conditions (O'Brien & McLellan)
