1 We have EXCITING news! Last year we applied for an Artist In Schools grant for 2017 and have been successful! Our Visual Arts teacher Jeenah Metcalfe developed a project idea with Rob Scholten, a Melbourne based artist that will result in a series of art installa- tions in the central courtyard of our school. The project will involve not only all students, all staff and parents but a range of members from the wider community. The project entitled River of Voices encourages an exploration of local history, culture and the environment and the changes to community over time. It considers the role of the Yarra River, explores the culture of the Wurunjderi people, promotes understandings about agriculture and the impact of urbanisation, the modern climate as well as encourages stu- dents to make predictions about the future. Throughout the project members of the community to which Warranwood PS belongs, will share their stories with our students aka the Voicescomponent of this project. Students will look for ways to answer 3 key questions: What was life like? What is life like? What might life be like in the future? The project has three aspects: Researching as a part of classroom programs Translating ideas and feelings through a range of hand drawn designs into visual artworks that express the learning that occurred in the classroom. Making and creating art on tiles using paint. The first part is underway! The second and third aspects are components of the Visual Arts program and will begin to- wards the end of this term and in conjunction with Rob Scholten who will be our artist in residence for approximately 20 days during Term 3. What can you do? Share your own stories with your child/ren. Try to answer the 3 key questions using your personal experiences. You may also have family members and/or friends who have valuable information to share. Explore local areas including but not limited to Warrandyte, Warrandyte south, Warranwood, Wonga Park, Croydon, Lilydale, Ringwood and Ringwood North. There are many historical walking trails and places of interest that you can visit. Council websites provide a great deal of further information. Speak to your classroom teacher if you think you know of someone who might have an interesting story to share with our students. We can arrange for them to be interviewed and filmed by the senior School HAWK research group working with Andrew Tonkin this term. They will share it with all classes. Join our Facebook page Warranwood River Of Voices for reg- ular updates and photos of the project. The results of this project will be an exciting intersection between art, history and culture. If we can imagine this as some- thing that is alive, that affects us and is affected by us, the students and other participants will gain a greater understand- ing of where they come from and how they can positively impact their community. And by looking back at the past, it will also give a higher awareness of the future and our indi- vidual impact. This is a BIG project that involves many people. We want you to be a part of the journey with us by creating artwork for the mural also. More details about this soon! Inspiration for our mural – a community mural in St Kilda

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT WORKING BEE

Unfortunately I couldn’t attend the working bee, so thanks to Shane for coordinating and cooking! And thank you to the 5 families who came along! And our Preps have been working in the garden today, planting out lots of flow-ers!

al Dinosaur Museum, Old Parliament House, Australian Institute of Sport, Questacon, Parliament House, the

Australian War Memorial, the Royal Australian Mint and more!! The weather has been kind despite a chill in the

air morning and night! (That is Canberra!) Check out our Facebook page for lots of photos!

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL REPORT

LAST CHANCE TO BOOK A SPOT BY FRIDAY 6TH

MAY May 10

th is fast approaching and our first ever Fathering Project night is looking to be a great chance for Warranwood

dads to get together and talk about the challenges of being a dad! Don’t miss your chance to book a spot at the night and secure a beer and some pizza! RSVP closes on Friday May 6

th as we need to arrange catering for the night and can’t ac-

cept bookings after this time. Please return your personal invitation to guarantee a spot! The benefits of effective fathers, or father figures, are profound and have a very important influence on a child’s life. Mums generally do a great job as do some dads. However, some dads need to get more involved to be really effective so come along and get some great tips. Everyone “wins” - dads, wives, partners, kids, school and the community. IT’S GETTING COLDER! The weather has definitely changed in the last couple of weeks and the cold fresh mornings are with us to stay! If you have any Warranwood uniform jackets that are no longer needed or grown out of, we can put them to good use to support students who need a jacket to stay warm. If you have spare uniform items could you please send them in a bag to the office and we will redirect them to a needy and appreciative new owner. WARRANWOOD PEER MEDIATORS Over the coming weeks you will see our 2017 Peer Mediation team in action at lunchtimes helping students to solve social situations that don’t need an adult to be involved. The volunteer Year 5s have been participating in a special training pro-gram and have committed to giving up a lunchtime each fortnight to assist in the school community to help support War-ranwood’s safe and caring environment. Our Peer Mediators will also facilitate special games in the courtyard each lunchtime to assist lonely students with finding new friends and learning the skills of positive play. We are lucky to have so many Year 5 students who want to be so pro-active in making our community so supportive! Well done team!

At Warranwood we include Cyber Safety awareness and learning throughout the varying levels of the school. The content and focus obviously varies according to the age, skills and needs of the students. The RUIn values underpin our wellbeing work with students and naturally integrate to their digital citizenship. A wonderful resource available to parents is the iParent site at https://www.esafety.gov.au/about-the-office/resource-centre#forparents

MANAGING SCREEN TIME AT HOME! It can be a real challenge to lock horns with young people who feel they are the only ones whose parents don’t allow unlimited screen time! “Everyone else is allowed to!” - I hear this all the time from my 15 year old and in fact often get told I’m just old fashioned!!!! Please have a look at this tip sheet and reflect on how it might be useful to you and your fam-ily as it is always better to prevent a problem rather than cure it! Screen time and dependence is a challenging issue for many young people to sort through and come to terms with and the hints below might prove to be very handy! Shane

Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge 2017

The Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge is now open and we are excited about participating again this year. The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to 16 years in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition, but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by the closing date of the challenge. Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books. You can register your child by completing the form in this newsletter and returning it to school. All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and can choose to have their name included on the online Honour Roll. For more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge and to view the booklists, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc I hope that we have many enthusiastic Warranwood students participat-ing this year! Library News Dear Parents and Students, The library has had a problem in the loans database recently. I would appreciate if any student/parent has a problem or queries with their loans to please see me. I am available Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday’s, to help. Just pop in when convenient to you. With thanks Kim Barlow Library.

Grown Up’s Garden Club Our garden club consists of parents, grandparents and friends from the local community who meet to garden, maintain the school and enjoy a cuppa. We are mindful that some people have physical limitations, but there is plenty to do, so there is always an appropriate job for everyone. Projects are allocated based on what needs to be done in the school and the ability of the group from sweeping leaves to weeding, pruning, planting, mulching etc. In addition to the gardening we do, it’s a social morning with refreshments provided too. The kids love to be a part of it and often join in during recess or lunch times. Our next Garden club is Tuesday 16

th May from 9-1 and you are welcome to come for any part of this time you can

spare. If you have any questions or would like to be involved in any way please contact the office (child teacher etc) Or you can contact Kirsty on 0438 666 638 or [email protected]
