TWO VERSIONS OF PSALM 23

“From the Jewish Publication Society”

The Lord is my shepherd;

I lack nothing.

He makes me lie down in green pastures;

He leads me to water in places of repose;

He renews my life;

He guides me in right paths

as befits His name.

Though I walk through a valley of deepest darkness

I fear no harm, for You are with me;

Your rod and Your staff—they comfort me.

You spread a table for me in full view of my enemies;

You anoint my head with oil;

my drink is abundant.

Only goodness and steadfast love shall pursue me

all the days of my life,

and shall dwell in the house of the Lord

for many long years.

From “The Bible in Rhyme”

The Lord is my shepherd, and I want for naught.

He leads me beside quiet waters in thought.

He leads me in ways in which my soul’s restored.

He shows me the righteous way. He is my Lord.

I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

And I fear no evil, as God’s in each breath.

I am protected by His staff and rod,

For He is my savior as He is my God.

My table is set in the presence of my foes.

I’m anointed by God. My cup overflows.

Goodness and love follow me where I roam.

Forever I’ll dwell in the Lord’s holy home.

The Fourth Sunday of Easter is Good Shepherd Sunday. Jesus proclaims Himself to be the embodiment of the Good Shepherd evoked by David in the 23rd Psalm. Today I offer two versions of that psalm to spark our reflection. The first is a Jewish translation, which hopefully strengthens the bond with our Jewish brothers and sisters as we rely on the same God to shepherd us through life. The second is a creative, rhyming version from: “The Bible in Rhyme.” Enjoy!

The Holy Innocents Speaker Series will present:

The Link Between Mental Health and

Substance Misuse/Addiction:

CODA (Co-Occurring Disorders Awareness)

What comes first? Substance misuse or mental

health challenges?

Undiagnosed/untreated mental health disorders can lead to self-medicating with substances and substance use while the brain is still developing can lead to co-occurring disorders (COD). With approx imately 10.2 mi l l ion Americans meeting the criteria, the

diagnosis of COD is one we all need to understand. Early recognition and treatment can be the difference between a path of addiction, isolation and long-term emotional challenges - - or a path of wellness meaningful relationships and emotional well-being.

Today, April 22

nd, marks the 154th anniversary of “In God We Trust” being included on all newly minted U.S. coins by

an Act of Congress. The phrase seems to have originated from The Star Spangled Banner, written during the War of 1812, the fourth stanza includes the phrase “And this be our motto: In God is our Trust.” Its inclusion on American currency was a direct result of the turmoil of the Civil War when several petitions were made to congress to recognize Almighty God on our coins. The use of “In God We Trust” has not been uninterrupted. The motto disappeared from the nickel in 1883, and did not reappear until the Jefferson nickel in 1938. In 1908, Congress made it mandatory that the phrase be printed on all coins upon which it had previously appeared. It has been in continuous use on the penny since 1909, the dime since 1916, and has appeared on all gold and silver dollar coins, half-dollar coins and quarters struck since July 1, 1908. On July 30, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed a law to officially declare “In God We Trust” the national motto of the United States, two years after he pushed to have the phrase “under God” inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance. The law also mandated that the phrase be printed on all American paper currency. President Eisenhower discussed his decision to sign the law stating “in this way we are reaffirming the transcendence of religious faith in America’s heritage and future; in this way we shall constantly strengthen those spiritual weapons which forever will be our country’s most powerful resource in peace and war.” The legality of this motto has been questioned by those who advocate the separation of church and state and several lawsuits have occurred. The rulings have been that its use is of patriotic character and that government recognition of God does not constitute the establishment of a state church or sponsorship of a religious exercise. The adoption of our national motto has been reaffirmed by Congress in 2006, and 2011. A joint poll taken by USA Today, CNN and Gallup in 2003, showed that 90% of Americans support the inscription on our currency. In Judaism and Christianity “In God we Trust” resounds with several verses of the bible, including today’s responsorial, Psalm 118, Psalm 40, Psalm 73, and Proverbs 29:25. Muslim imam Feisal Abdul Rauf wrote that the phrase also resonates with early Islamic teaching from the Quran, 3:193, and 2:285. Melkote Ramaswamy, a Hindu American scholar writes that the presence of the phrase on American currency is a reminder that “there is God everywhere, whether we are conscious or not.” So the next time you find a penny on the street, a quarter in the washing machine or a dime in an old coat pocket, say our National motto as a quick prayer and reaffirmation of God’s presence in your life.

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

First Reading: Acts 4:8-12 Peter explains to the elders that his healing of a cripple was done in the name of Jesus Christ. He reminds he elders that they crucified Jesus, but God rose him up so that all people could be saved in his name. Second Reading: I John 3:1-2 John expresses amazement at the fact that God allowed us to be called his children. Although we are unsure exactly what we will be after this life, we do know that we will see God as he is and be like him. Gospel: John 10:11-18 Jesus speaks of a shepherd working only for pay, with no real concern for the sheep being well cared for. But Jesus is our shepherd and would lay down his own life for all those in his flock. God loves him for his willingness to sacrifice himself for the sake of all God’s children.
