PASTOR’S POETRY POST-IT

“Christ the Comrade”

Christ, by thine own darkened hour, Live within me, heart and brain- Let my hands not slip the rein! Ah, how long ago it is Since a comrade went with me! Now a moment let me see Thyself, lonely in the dark, Perfect, without wound or mark!

So many great things are happening during this Lenten Season! We had Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with the entire Wednesday afternoon classes. The children spent time with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. What a beautiful experience it was. We thank Mrs. Pomilla and our Third Graders for bringing us to the Lord! Last weekend we had the Mass of Introduction for our Confirmation Candidates and their Sponsors. As the Director of the Program I was so proud of all of our Candidates! They displayed the Gift of Reverence in their behavior, their attire, their mature attitude and their prayerfulness. We thank the Catechists, Parents and Sponsors for journeying with our young adults. We also thank the parishioners who took a dove home with a particular candidate’s name on it. We ask for you to pray for that particular candidate as they continue their journey. On Wednesday evening we teamed up with Pleasantville Strong who gave a presentation to our Eighth Graders and their Parents. We thank Michael Ahearn for his Witness and everyone who helped in the planning of the evening. It was an evening of awareness, prevention and healing. All of our classes are working very hard on the three pillars of Lent: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. I want to take this time to acknowledge the wonderful service work that our Fifth Graders did under the guidance of Lorraine McDermott, Jim Horrigan and Vanessa Kalle. On Saturday, April 1, 2017 our Fifth Graders went to BrightView Senior Living in Tarrytown for a morning of “Brightening the Seniors Day.” Our students spent time with the Seniors and played cards, colored, played game sand simply talked and shared. This is the second time that our 5th Graders went beyond the books in the classroom and brought their faith to life by giving of themselves to others in a beautiful and loving way! Thank you to the Catechists and parents who supported the children’s efforts. Looking Ahead: Classes will not be in Session from Monday, April 10th through Monday, April 17th. Classes will resume on Tuesday, April 18, 2017. Maria Lamorgese, Director Ph 914-769-3297, Ext. 1 [email protected]

This weekend our entrance hymn is There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy. It is #475 in our hymnals. The hymn was written by Frederick Faber. Frederick Faber was born in Yorkshire, England in 1814, and raised a strict Calvinist. After attending Oxford, he took orders as an Anglican priest in 1839 and began his ministry as a rector. He was influenced by his friend John Henry Newman, who converted to Catholicism in 1845. Frederick Faber converted that same year. Both men were drawn to the rituals and tradition of Rome. Faber formed a community in Birmingham called “Brothers of the Will of God”, Newman joined the Oratory, an order of secular priests established by St. Philip Neri in Rome. Eventually Frederick Faber also joined the Oratory and was said to be its moving and guiding spirit as long as he lived. He was a great preacher and a man of charming personality. Frederick Faber recognized that the Roman Catholics lacked a tradition of more recent hymns in English. He took it upon himself to remedy this, and by the time he died in 1863, he had contributed over 150 hymns, all composed after his conversion. There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy originally had eight stanzas which he expanded to thirteen. Frederick Faber wrote the images to cheer on the soul, recognizing the troubles of life, and holding out for the promise of a final homecoming. The hymn echoes some of his Calvinist roots with a mighty and sovereign God, but with Faber’s sensitivity that God’s sovereign power and understanding are far beyond human capabilities. As noted in the line:

“For the love of God is broader than the measure of our mind.”

The ultimate theme of this hymn is based on the premise that a sovereign God, unlike earthly rulers, demonstrates welcome, kindness, grace and mercy. All we need to do is have faith.

Second Reading: Romans 8:8-11 Paul reminds the Romans that they are not people of the flesh but people of the Spirit because the Spirit of God dwells in them. Gospel: John 11:1-45 In great detail, John tells the story of the raising of Lazarus to life. Upon learning of the death of Lazarus, his dear friend, Jesus goes to comfort Martha and Mary.
