The LEED Gold-certified department store was awarded an “Outstanding” performance rating by the U.S. Navy. The 150,000-square-foot building was awarded many national and state awards, including the National Design-Build Institute of America Award in 2012.

CMH will be tasked to redesign the new 60,000-square-foot museum on a 24-acre site in Leeds, Alabama. The museum looks to double their current footprint, and will neighbor the nationally acclaimed Barber Vintage Motorsports Museum & Park.

CMH was honored to be involved in the efforts to help rebuild and restore buildings in two separate communities damaged by deadly tornadoes. The first building was a historical renovation of the First United Methodist Church of Cullman, Alabama. CMH also partnered with the mayor of Cordova, Alabama, to rebuild their city hall.

The M. Miller Gorrie Center received the first USGBC LEED Gold certification in the state of Alabama and is the first LEED-certified building at Auburn University.

After a distinguished career as Director of General Services for Jefferson County, Billy joined the firm to help expand its capabilities for programming, quality control, and construction administration services.

The firm completed this 100-acre mixed-use project with retail, restaurants, a branch library with LEED Gold-certified interiors, and 80,000 square feet of office space.

The new 57,500-square-foot three-story public building houses the police department, municipal courts, and municipal jail facilities.

The original founders’ goal was to create a firm with resources capable of handling major projects, but personalized enough to enable them to infuse their own individual talents and interaction into each project that bore their signature.

CMH master-planned and designed all six phases of this upscale mixed-use development, and after nearly 25 years as The Summit’s architect of record, the firm continues to provide services as the project evolves in the ever-changing retail environment.

CMH moves from its first office location at 22 Inverness Park Drive to its present day headquarters in 1800 International Park.

CMH completed this 362,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility created for 2,500 students. The new building included a 2,000-seat

basketball arena.

This project combined two adjacent buildings to function as one building. This partnership with the county demonstrated CMH capabilities to problem-solve complex municipal projects.

The award-winning indoor-outdoor dining hall not only helped CMH create a presence on The Universtiy of Alabama’s campus, but also established CMH as an innovator in dining-hall design.

Everett Hatcher is managing principal architect with over 40 years of experience. He was selected to serve on the Design Faculty in Auburn University’s School of Architecture and worked with several design firms before he formed his present architectural firm in 1980. His architectural career highlights a strong specialization in the planning and design of institutional and corporate facilities.

Billy Morace joined CMH Architects in 2007. Since that time, he has worked on retail, government, and institutional projects. His 30 years of experience in construction project management for Jefferson County, Alabama, has given him a unique owner’s perspective that adds quality and value to our projects. His experience with all types of building systems and project budgeting are invaluable tools when developing projects from conception to completion.

JOHN WOODVice President

John Wood joined CMH Architects, Inc. in 2005, continuing a career as project architect. He has led the design of a wide variety of project types, both foreign and domestic. Included in his resume are Class-A office buildings, high-end retail centers, educational facilities (primary, secondary, and post-secondary), manufacturing facilities, and mixed-use projects. He has extensive experience in all components of the building process from initial programming all the way to construction administration.

With over 33 years of experience and the second architect in the state to successfully complete the interior design qualifying exam (NCIDQ), MikeTillman has combined the architecture and interior design disciplines while serving as project manager on a diverse range of project types and complexities. These projects include office buildings, healthcare facilites, department stores, and retail and mixed-use developments.

Blake Nelson joined CMH Architects upon graduation from Auburn University in 1998. He has had extensive involvement in various phases of many different project types, including both new and renovated educational facilities and many high-end retail developments. His responsibilities have included programming, site planning, design development, producing and coordinating construction documents, and construction administration.

Working closely with police and other staff, as well as holding open charettes with local community members, CMH designed a building for the City of Anniston, Alabama. The facility was located opposite Zinn Park downtown and included a new police department headquarters with e911 center, crime lab, and evidence storage, as well as the municipal court and a 110-bed municipal jail facility.

The new facility is a one-story building housing approximately 45,500 square feet of support facilities, two dormitory-style block housing units, and four new cell blocks. ADA-accessible cells have been provided per ACA and ADA guidelines. Required day room, classrooms, indoor recreation space along with equipment and space for video visitation have also been provided. A central building contains a sally port, laundry, commissary, central control, and a full-service kitchen for preparing meals for up to 500 inmates. In addition to the new construction, a portion of the existing facility was renovated. Electrical systems include energy code compliant design for all systems to include lighting and power systems, life-safety emergency and fire alarm systems, and data and communications systems.

Birmingham City Hall First Floor Office & Entrance Renovations

This project included the removal of part of the exterior monumental stair to the main entrance on the second level and the creation of a new main entrance to the first-level entry that is ADA compliant and provides security control for the general public. The interior renovation includes a new public lobby and relocation and general renovation of approximately 30,000 square feet of office space for the finance department. The exterior renovation includes a new entrance and a new plaza. Due to the complex nature of phasing and staged demolition, BIM modeling was utilized to enhance the construction documents and to improve the project description during the bidding of this project.

Cordova City Hall, Police Station & InfrastructureIn the aftermath of the tornadoes of April 2011, CMH Architects teamed with Cordova Mayor Drew Gilbert and City Planner Steve Ostaseski to pursue a grant to fund the redevelopment of the city. Their efforts paid off as they were awarded a HUD grant for tornado recovery from the State of Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs. The project is a new facility to house the City of Cordova City Hall, Police Station, and a 19-bed detention facility. The new facility is a one-story building housing approximately 11,600 SF.

The project included alterations and renovations by combining two adjacent buildings to function as one building for the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department. Renovations included general office areas, evidence labs, evidence storage, building systems, security systems, law enforcement center, and installation of a new elevator and shaft.

This project was a total renovation of building systems in two county jail facilities located in Birmingham and Bessemer, Alabama. During this renovation, the HVAC, fire alarm, electrical, and security systems were totally refurbished or replaced while keeping the facilities fully occupied. Additional work included bringing certain building elements up to the newest codes. Both kitchen facilites were completely renovated, and additional cosmetic changes were made to the administrative areas in both facilities.

Prior to joining CMH, Billy was Director of Facilities for Jefferson County and was responsible for the design, construction, maintenance,and operation of over 6 million square feet of institutional space, including their jails, sheriffs’ offices and training facilities, courthouses, and E911 facilities. Since joining CMH, Billy has managed the programming, budgeting, design, and construction of all our public-safety projects. His unique experience gives our team an owner’s perspective for designing functional facilities.
