Term 3 Week 8 11 Th September 2018 Week 8 Focus – we are RESPECTFUL before school. From the Principal: So many of our students have experienced wonderful things this week. Our Year 1 & Year 2 students visited Awabakal Environmental Centre, and by all accounts, they had a wonderful time. One of the instructors at the venue said on both days that our students were “the best they had ever experienced!!!” Does it get any better than that? Thanks to everyone involved for providing this opportunity for our students. Year 3 Camp What a dedicated team of teachers we have at MPS! Some slept over, others prepared breakfast and dinner, parents and staff helped to set up and pack up. They say many hands make light work and it was fantastic to see everyone pitching in to support this great initiative. One student comment was “I had so much fun, I don’t want to go home”. Others learnt to wash up for the first time – a life skill, for sure! Camp songs were sung, stories were told and everyone had a fantastic time. Thank you to everyone involved for providing such a beneficial experience for our students. State Dance Festival This week our Senior Dance Group will travel to Sydney to perform ‘In the Mood for a Melody’ at the State Dance Festival. Many parents and teachers will accompany our students and I’m sure everyone will have a great time. Personally I can’t wait to see the show on Friday night, I’m very excited! I would like to recognise the efforts of the talented Mrs Hugo and Mrs Payne, who work tirelessly to create wonderful opportunities for our senior dancers. I would also like to thank all the parents for being so supportive throughout the year. Enrolments for 2018 We are very much looking forward to welcoming of the talented Mrs Hugo and Mrs Payne, who work tirelessly to create wonderful opportunities for our senior dancers. I would also like to thank all the parents for being so supportive throughout the year. Parent Information Session At tonight’s P & C meeting, staff from K-6 will be showcasing how we integrate technology into our teaching/learning. The meeting will commence at 6pm and free babysitting is available. Hope to see as many parents/carers as possible. Enrolments for 2018 We are very much looking forward to welcoming all new families to MPS next year. Our school is now taking kindergarten enrolments, please see the office for an enrolment form. Please note that all public schools now have a catchment boundary. If you are unsure as to which public school your child should attend, please check with the office. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Joan Stephens – Principal Term 3 Week 8 Tuesday 11th September 2018

ACADEMIC

CORNER

SRC

This is the 11th year of our Student

Representative Council. In 2018,

the SRC consists of thirteen Year 6

members, who contribute to our

school in various ways. Four

captains are elected from the

group of councillors, who have

been voted in by their grade to

lead our school. Amongst our SRC

responsibilities are Welfare and Fundraising,

Environment, Sport and Culture. We also have a

secretary, who holds the responsibility of paperwork

and finalising the minutes of each meeting. Together,

this has given us a very well rounded and active

Student Representative Council.

2018 Councillor Team:

School Captains: Audrey S, Harry S Vice Captains: Claudia M, Cooper E Secretary: Ella R Welfare/Fundraising: Deacon E, Jed B Environment: Fletcher W, Kady S Sport: Hunter S, Cooper S Culture: Grace K, Alivia C

Apart from always

representing and

leading our school

during important

events, councillors

also have the

important role of liaising between the needs of the

students and staff/ P&C, to make our school a better

place. Issues and concerns are brought up in

classroom meetings and our councillors deliver these

to the appropriate staff member, so the issue can be

solved in the most appropriate manner. Reporting the

outcome back to students and Class Captains in our

SRC meetings is also part of their job.

SRC Treat Days are a

great fundraiser for our

school and donations

are given to the selected

charity of their choice

each year. This year we

have raised money for

Breast Cancer and the Mark Hughes Foundation. Next

Tuesday 11th September, our fundraiser will help

support our Senior Dance Group, who have attained

selection into the State Dance Festival, to help lower

the cost of accommodation for families. Next term,

our Treat Day will focus on raising much needed funds

for our farming community.

We have recently had the privilege of our mayor, Mr

Martin Rush, attend one of our SRC meetings. This

came about as our Welfare councillors wrote him a

letter, hoping to push for an extra pedestrian crossing

at our school. He responded immediately and

attended our meeting, taking questions from our

Stage 3 students. The calibre of questions given by our

students was outstanding, showing determination and

confidence in their beliefs. It was humbling to watch,

as student after student asked Mr Rush some very

insightful questions about Muswellbrook.

The Student Representative Council will continue to

work hard for the students and staff of Muswellbrook

Public School and look forward to the rest of 2018!

Term 3 Week 8 11Th September 2018

Stage 1 ‘Awabakal’ Excursion On Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th September, an excited Stage 1 travelled to Awabakal Environmental Education

Centre (EEC). We were met by the Awabakal teachers who coordinated a series of activities that complimented what

students have been learning about during their science lessons on living things at school.

Throughout the day, Stage 1 participated in four activities: dip netting, searching for invertebrates, a rainforest walk and

learning about how Aboriginal people used and cared for natural resources in the area.

When dip netting, students caught a variety of small water creatures including tadpoles, dragonfly nymphs, water mites

and water beetles such as backswimmers and water boatmen. These were examined under magnifying glasses and

then returned to their wetland habitat.

Whilst on the rainforest walk, some groups were lucky enough to observe a pair of kookaburras who had made their

nest in a termite mound attached to a tall gum tree. We also saw and learned about the effects of bushfires on the

forest.

Students surveyed leaf litter in the hope of observing some small invertebrates. Ants were a common insect found,

however, spiders, millipede’s beetles and grubs were also seen. When the sun came out, so did the large meat ants and

students were very interested in observing these from a safe distance.

In the Awabakal classroom, Stage 1 listened carefully to how Aboriginal people used natural resources found in the area

to make items such as spears, dilly bags, coolamons and bowls. They were fortunate enough to handle some of these

items. Students also learned about ways in which Aboriginal people used and cared for plants, animals and other

natural resources in a sustainable manner.

Stage 1 had a fantastic excursion to Awabakal EEC and a big thank you goes out to the parent helpers and teachers

who were involved. At the end of both days, Awabakal staff congratulated students on their exemplary behaviour. They

were very complimentary about their experience with Muswellbrook Public School. Well done, Stage 1!
