We are missionaries of Love and Hope:

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:

I am grateful for each of you as missionaries of love and hope. It is your witness to the people we encounter daily that impacts the sharing of the Love of Christ.

The 2020 One Bread, One Body Annual Catholic Appeal funds diocesan-wide ministries that assist in this sharing and serves all parishioners in our local Church. Through Jesus, we are called to care for one another. As a mission diocese, parishes alone are not able to provide for these essential services, which is why we depend on your generosity.

The ministries funded by the One Bread, One Body Annual Catholic Appeal are described on the following pages through the words of participants from across the Archdiocese. These are the voices of faith in action.

Generous hearts provide love and hope for all of our brothers and sisters, from Unalaska to Talkeetna, from Kenai to Cordova, and everywhere in between. Please prayerfully consider your contribution to the 2020 One Bread, One Body Annual Catholic Appeal.

Thank you for your generous support!

Many blessings and peace,

Our priests travel from the tip of the Aleutian chain to Prince William Sound, from the Kenai Peninsula to Talkeetna, and everywhere in between to bring the sacraments to our communities.

We are a people of many cultures, worshiping side by side as one cross-cultural faith family.

“ Whenever the Catholic Native Ministries sing native songs, it gives me great pride to sing in our language… I have learned how to look at “other cultures” not as other cultures, but as people.” – Marilyn Lokanin, Catholic Native Ministry member

“ I think our ministries are bringing many of our people back to church! If the family goes to church and takes their children, then our church builds back up!” – Renee Nicholson, Catholic Native Ministry member

“ The Valdez Ministerial Alliance has a breakfast meeting at a local restaurant once every three months to share plans and church events.  This brings all the pastors closer together and helps us to “break the ice” of isolation.” – Fr. Eric Wiseman, St. Francis Xavier Parish

Cemeteries are a visible sign of the love that unites the living with the communion of saints who have gone before us into eternal life.

Cemeteries

“ Each summer at Sacred Heart cemetery, we offer Mass for those who are buried there. Through the generations we show love for our brothers and sisters eternally, by the deed of our prayers and the truth of our hope in the promise of Jesus Christ to raise us all on the last day.” – Fr. Joseph McGilloway, Pastor, Sacred Heart Parish

Sound discernment and solid formation are critical to forming missionaries of love and hope in those who are called to serve our Archdiocese as priests, deacons, or consecrated religious.

“ We are missionaries of love and hope when we are present to those in need. My favorite quote is from Mother Theresa -“God does not require us to be perfect in what we do but to simply try.” – Deacon Mick Fornelli

Seminarians and Vocations

Clergy and Diaconate

“ I was able to spend two weeks in Kolkata, India as part of my formation. The intensive experience of Jesus’ burning thirst for love and for souls changed me and the way I think about service. The sisters and the poor we served taught me so much about giving and receiving love and how the love of Christ compels us to love those we meet until it hurts.” – Ed Burke, Seminarian

“ Sharing the Gospel with those in prison, teaching refugee children, feeding the homeless, and enriching the liturgical programs at my parish assignments are just a few of the ways God allows me to share in His mission of love and hope in the world.” – Madison Hayes, Seminarian

Our future is full of hope when young people encounter Christ: we must evangelize and empower them to share God’s love with their families and communities.

“ Going to the different workshops helped me learn new and different ways to strengthen my faith and to continue with it throughout my life.” – Jessica Salao, National Catholic Youth Conference attendee

“ Ever since before I was told I could go to World Youth Day, I have been going to church more often, and have tried to involve myself with its Catholic community as much as I can.” – Joseph Bjelland, World Youth Day attendee

Diocesan staff support parish leaders, who are the primary faith witnesses to thousands of youth. The sacraments are key stepping stones along the journey of developing a lasting, mature faith.

“ I especially enjoy witnessing the hunger and enthusiasm of our adults as they are captivated by new insights. This gives me hope that the formation will lead to transformation and ultimately a powerful desire to take Christ into their homes and the surrounding culture without fear.” – Joanne Rousculp, Faith Formation Director, St. Michael

Our schools provide moral and intellectual formation and a worldview centered in Christ, all through an environment of love and hope.

“ The Church and the Catholic School have given our family hope knowing that our children are receiving quality education and learning the purpose of the Lord’s words.” – Estelina Paasi, parent, Our Lady of the Valley Catholic School

“ I love how Catholic Schools have been a partner with our family to guide our children in the ways of our Lord.” – Barbara Corso, parent, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School, Anchorage

“ Catholic education has formed me to try and see each person as Christ sees them….[which] encourages me to see each person as they are: a person created for love.” – Kate Bazin, parent, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton School, and teacher, Lumen Christi High School, Anchorage

We are missionaries of

Love and Hope:Lord our God,

We thank you for our blessings. Everything we have is from your hand. Your love gives us dignity that cannot be taken away.

In light of your infinite love, we respond to your call to greater holiness by casting our nets into the deep, seeking you in everyday moments, and living as missionaries of love and hope to the world.

Your love leads us to action. The faith we profess is perfected through our relationships and our testimony.

Your compassion leads us to trust in your abundance, and our hearts are filled with mercy as we care for one another.

Your promise leads us to everlasting joy, and we bring your presence to the world when we shine as a light to the nations.

May our prayer lead us to conversion, to love as you have loved us, for you cannot be outdone in generosity.

Amen.
