The World Diabetes Day Campaign Book

I look forward to your continued support to take

World Diabetes Day to the next level. No matter

where you are, its your efforts and your hard work

that make World Diabetes Day a truly global,

grassroots campaign. Because of you and theevents you organize, diabetes is put in the

international spotlight. Therefore I count on you to

have a positive impact - not only on the lives of

people with diabetes, but those who are at risk of

developing the disease. We are united for diabetes,

Every year on November 14, World Diabetes Day unites the global diabetes

community to produce a powerful voice for diabetes awareness and advocacy,

engaging individuals and communities to bring the diabetes epidemic into the publicspotlight. The campaign is a truly global celebration that brings together millions of

people in over 160 countries to raise awareness of diabetes and advocate for

    improved diabetes care and prevention.

2010 marks the second year of the five-year focus on 'Diabetes education and

prevention. In 2009, the campaign called on all those responsible for diabetes care

to understand diabetes and know the warning signs and risk factors. This year we

are going a step further by calling on the global diabetes community, other

concerned individuals, and the general public to take active control of their health

    and wellbeing.

The success of the campaign is built on the dedicated grassroots efforts of diabetes

representative organizations, healthcare professionals, healthcare authorities,

industry partners, and individuals who want to make a difference. No matter how

small, every contribution makes a difference in the fight against the diabetes

epidemic that currently affects over 300 million people around the world.

What can you do to mark World Diabetes Day?

Youll find the answer in this user-friendly reference guide that weve compiled to

inspire and engage, and facilitate a unified global campaign across all regions and

countries. The guide will help you with the planning, promotion and execution of

    your WDD activity.

The document consists of three sections: Introduction, WDD activities, and WDD

    resources.

The activity section includes different WDD activities that can be organized to suit

different target groups. Each activity includes a description, a check-list,

suggestions on how to promote your event locally, how IDF can help promote your

activity, which WDD materials are available to help you organize your event, and

how you can share your success with others.

The resources section includes a selection of documents with information that has

been developed to help you organize a WDD event: from key facts about the

campaign, media guidelines, and campaign tools, to how to order WDD materials

and merchandize, and how to use the Virtual Museum.

If you require any additional information or have any questions or comments about

the information included in this document, please contact the WDD team at

    Blue Monument and Exercise Challenge

    Description

A great way of raising awareness of diabetes

and World Diabetes Day your village, town or

city is by lighting iconic buildings and sites in

the colour of the blue circle, the global symbol

for diabetes, the central component of the

World Diabetes Day campaign logo. The logo

can also be projected onto the building.

A key aspect of the Monument Challenge this

year is strengthening the link of the blue

lightings with diabetes and World Diabetes Day, and using this platform to

communicate the campaign key messages to the general public and media. We are

encouraging the organization of physical activity events in conjunction with the blue

lighting of iconic monuments and buildings. The lightings offer the perfect scenario

to organize activities which promote physical activity for example a walk, an

aerobics workout, or dancing to encourage people with diabetes, those at risk,

and the general public to take control of diabetes and their health, and convey apositive and empowering message. To highlight the benefits of physical activity in

managing diabetes, people with diabetes could measure their blood glucose before

    and after the exercise.

The blue lightings and exercise challenge are a perfect opportunity to involve local

authorities, celebrities, and the media. A ceremony could be organized around the

activity, and local authorities or celebrities could be invited to speak and share their

    personal experiences with the public.

We recommend programming the lightings on the evening of November 13; thisway the media will be able to have images of the lightings for use in WDD-related

stories printed or broadcast on November 14.

    Checklist

Identify the building or monument to be lit in blue and contact the peopleresponsible for the building to request the lighting. See our WDD lighting

    guide for more details.

Identify an area near the building where the exercise event could take place.

See the section on physical activity events and blood glucose testing formore information on how to organize the exercise activity.

Identify technical requirements for your event lighting equipment, audiovisual requirements, etc. You may also require a stage.

Identify who is going to participate in the lighting ceremony and sendinvitations.

Identify with the local authorities (e.g. police) what permits are required, and consider safety issues.

Identify a professional photographer or someone within your organizationthat could take pictures of the lighting. Be aware that night shots require

    special equipment and skills.

Consider a registration area for those who wish to participate in theexercise/blood glucose test event.

Order WDD promotional items from the IDF Online Shop.

How can I promote my event locally?

Prior to the lighting, contact local media and let them know about the event, what

is happening and why, and who will be attending (local authorities and/or

celebrities). Prepare a press release for local, and national media. Send media and

    photo call alerts.

Promote the event on local websites, and in local community centres, health

    centres, pharmacies, etc.

An example of a press release and tips on how to contact local media can be found

    in the Resources Section.

If you have a website or webpage, create a WDD section where you can include

news updates and information about the event.

How can IDF support my event?

If you secure a lighting, please communicate it to the IDF Executive Office

[email protected]. Lightings will be promoted in the IDF newsletter and on

social media like Twitter and Facebook. All lightings are listed on the WDD

website, and displayed on a Google map with an image of the monument or

building. Lightings are also displayed in the WDD online events calendar.

    Physical Activity

    Description

In 2010 we want to highlight the

importance of physical activity in the

    prevention of diabetes and diabetes

    complications. We are encouraging the

    organization of exercise events in

conjunction with the lighting in blue of

iconic monuments and buildings, or as aseparate event. Types of activities that

could be organized include walks, cycle

rides, aerobic workouts, hula hooping, and dancing. It is important to choose a

physical activity that is appropriate for those that will be attending your event.

Local sports clubs could also be invited to participate.

A ceremony could be organized to open and/or close the event, providing the

opportunity to engage with the participants and communicate the key messages of

the World Diabetes Day campaign, facts on diabetes management and prevention,

and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Invite local authorities and/or celebrities totake part, and give them the opportunity to share their personal experiences with

    those attending.

Blood Glucose Test: In order to convey the benefits of physical activity in the

management of diabetes, we encourage you to invite people with diabetes

participating in your activity to measure their blood glucose before and after the

exercise session. To ensure the availability of blood glucose meters for everyone,

you can invite pharmaceutical companies to sponsor your event and provide them.

Participants should register before the event and take note of their test results.

Make sure to collect the results so that you can communicate and share the

information with all participants and the media. For information on how to organize

a registration system and collect results, as well as facts and tips on diabetes and

exercise, go to the resource section of this guide.

For the general public, WDD blue measuring tapes could be distributed to highlight

the link between waist circumference and the risk of type 2 diabetes.

    Checklist

Map the route or location where the activity will take place.

Diabetes Day measuring tape for use in World Diabetes Day grassroots activities all

over the world. The tape will include information on the links between waist

circumference and the risk of type 2 diabetes. We encourage all those organizing

WDD events to distribute the blue measuring tapes among participants. They can

also be used in popular activities like mass screenings. Organizations are also

encouraged to distribute the tapes among the general public in busy areas of the

city or town, raising awareness of diabetes and World Diabetes Day among all those

with little or no knowledge about the condition and the campaign. More informationon how to use the offline version of the Blue Circle Test and order the tape can be

    Human Blue Circles

    Description

The formation of human blue circles

is a simple activity with a great

visual impact that can be organized

as an individual activity or as part of

a bigger event. It can be organized

    within a company, school, college,

university, with members of a localorganization, or just a group of

    friends.

Human blue circles are a simple and

fun activity to organize in a school. To do so contact the school principle or nurse

and explain the meaning of World Diabetes Day and the blue circle, the importance

of diabetes prevention, and how organizing an activity like a human blue circle can

encourage children to be more active, while raising awareness of one of the most

    common chronic conditions affecting children.

To organize a human blue circle in your workplace with your colleagues, contact

your HR department and explain how such an activity can raise awareness of

diabetes, and promote diabetes prevention and a healthy lifestyle among staff.

Colleagues could also receive blue measuring tapes to raise awareness of the link

between waist circumference and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

    Checklist

Identify the location where the human blue circle will be formed. Check with local authorities (e.g. police) if a permit is required. Plan in advance the size of the circle and estimate the number of people

    needed.

Print or obtain blue t-shirts, raincoats, balloons, or prepare pieces of bluecardboard that people can hold in the air. Blue umbrellas are an appropriate

choice if the weather conditions are a concern.

The online tool will showcase the risk factors of type 2 diabetes and display the

positive actions that can be taken to reduce a person's risk. Users will be

confronted with one or more fictitious characters at high risk of developing type 2

diabetes. The aim will be to reduce a character's risk by eliminating risk factors and

adding positive actions. With each action, the user will be informed in an informal

way on the hows and whys.

The offline version will consist of a special World Diabetes Day blue measuring tape

by being active and involving your friends and/or family. This year we are

expeditions throughout Latin-American. The main objective is to monitor and

balance blood-sugar levels before, during and after each activity to show that, with

access to the appropriate care and education, people with diabetes can achieve

    anything.

On the occasion of World Diabetes Day 2008 the Bandera al Cielo team will carry a

    ABOUT WORLD DIABETES DAY

When does World Diabetes Day take place?

World Diabetes Day takes place on 14 November every year. The date was chosen

because it marks the birthday of Frederick Banting, who, along with Charles Best, is

credited with the discovery of insulin in 1921. While many events take place on or

around the day itself, a themed campaign runs throughout the year.

How did it all begin?World Diabetes Day was introduced by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF)

and the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1991, in response to concern over the

escalating incidence of diabetes around the world. Since then, the event has grown

    in popularity every year.

    United Nations World Day

World Diabetes Day is now an official United Nations World Health Day. On 20

December 2006, the UN General Assembly passed resolution 61/225, which

designated the existing World Diabetes Day as an official world day beginning in

2007. This landmark resolution also recognized diabetes as a chronic, debilitating

and costly disease associated with major complications that pose severe risks for

families, countries and the entire world.

    Where does it take place?

    ABOUT IDF

The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has been leading the global diabetes

community since 1950. It has grown into an umbrella organization of over 200

national diabetes associations in more than 160 countries and territories,

representing the interests of the increasing number of people with diabetes and

those at risk. The Federation is divided into seven regions, with the aim of

strengthening the work of national diabetes associations and enhancing the

    collaboration between them.

Led by the International Diabetes Federation, the Unite for Diabetes campaign

secured a United Nations Resolution on diabetes in December 2006. The Resolution

encourages UN Member States to develop national policies for the prevention,

treatment and care of diabetes in line with the strengthening of their healthcare

systems, taking into account internationally agreed development goals, including

the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The Federation continues to lead the

global effort to implement Resolution 61/255 under the Unite for Diabetes banner.

The mission of the International Diabetes Federation is to promote diabetes care,

prevention and a cure worldwide. The Federation is engaged in action to tackle

diabetes from the local to the global level from programmes at community level

to worldwide awareness and advocacy initiatives.

IDF activities aim to influence policy, increase public awareness and encourage

health improvement, promote the exchange of high-quality information about

diabetes, and provide education for people with diabetes and their healthcareproviders. IDFs awareness and advocacy initiatives are grounded in the

experiences of its global network of national diabetes associations.

Global Advocacy on diabetes and other Non-communicable Diseases

    (NCDs)

Diabetes and other NCDs are a serious, fast-growing threat to global health and

economic development. Much of the burden falls on countries where communicable

diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria already present a serious

problem. Despite the size of the threat, the international resources to manage and

prevent diabetes and other NCDs are not forthcoming.

The International Diabetes Federation advocates for a significant increase in global

investment to tackle diabetes and other NCDs, and is working to raise the profile of

all NCDs within key governmental and inter-governmental organizations. In 2009,

the International Diabetes Federation formed an alliance with its three sister

federations - the World Heart Federation, International Union Against Cancer, and

the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (The Union). The

alliance has issued five important demands:

    1. That diabetes and other NCDs be included in the 2010 review of theMillennium Development Goals.

    2. That essential medicines be made available for all people living with NCDs.3. That funding for NCDs be increased immediately and substantially.4. That a Special Session on NCDs be held by the UN General Assembly.5. That NCD treatment and prevention be integrated into national health

systems and the global development agenda.

On 13 May 2010, the alliance achieved one of these demands when the UnitedNations General Assembly voted to hold a NCD Summit involving Heads of State in

    September 2011.

IDF also sits on the International Advisory Council of the World Health

Organizations Global Noncommunicable Disease Network (NCDnet), a network of

leading global organizations and experts brought together to combat NCDs,

strengthen global partnerships and help governments plan and implement

measures to reduce the burden of NCDs.

    ABOUT DIABETES

Diabetes is a chronic disease that arises when the pancreas does not produce

enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces.

Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that enables cells to take in glucose

from the blood and use it for energy. Failure of insulin production, insulin action or

both leads to raised glucose levels in the blood (hyperglycaemia). This is associated

with long-term damage to the body and the failure of various organs and tissues.

There are two main types of diabetes:

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease characterized by the destruction of the

insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Consequently, people with type 1 diabetes

produce very little or no insulin and must take insulin to survive. Type 1 diabetes,

which used to be called juvenile-onset diabetes, is most commonly diagnosed in

    children and young adults.

Type 2 diabetes is marked by insulin resistance. People with type 2 diabetes

cannot use the insulin that they produce effectively. They can often manage their

condition through exercise and diet. However, in many cases oral drugs are needed

and often insulin is required. Type 2 diabetes accounts for over 90% of the more

than 300 million people living with diabetes worldwide.

Both type 1 and type 2 diabetes are serious.

A third type of diabetes is Gestational diabetes (GDM), a condition in which women

without previously diagnosed diabetes have high blood glucose levels during their

pregnancy. GDM affects about 4% of all pregnant women. It has few symptoms and

usually disappears when the pregnancy ends. Women who had GDM have a

significantly increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

According to the latest data released by the International Diabetes Federation

(IDF), diabetes now affects over 300 million people worldwide. If nothing is done to

reverse the epidemic, IDF predicts that by 2030, some 450 million people will live

    with the disease.

    DIABETES PREVENTION AND EDUCATION

Diabetes EducationEducation is of the utmost importance in the prevention of diabetes

complications and central to the World Diabetes Day campaign.

Diabetes is difficult. It imposes life-long demands on people with diabetes, requiring

them to make multiple decisions related to managing their condition. People with

diabetes need to monitor their blood glucose, take medication, exercise regularly

and adjust their eating habits. Furthermore, they may have to face issues related to

living with the complications of diabetes and may be required to make considerable

psychological adjustments. As outcomes are largely based on the decisions they

take, it is of paramount importance that people with diabetes receive ongoing,

high-quality diabetes education that is tailored to their needs and delivered by

    skilled health professionals.

Without diabetes education, people with diabetes are less prepared to take

informed decisions, make behavioural changes, address the psycho-social issues

presented by diabetes and, ultimately, may be ill-equipped to manage their

diabetes effectively. Poor management will result in reduced health outcomes and

an increased likelihood of developing complications.

The role of the diabetes educator is of critical importance within the diabetes care

team. The educator enables people with diabetes to manage their diabetes-related

health to the best of their ability so that choices and actions are based upon

    informed judgement.

Diabetes education is best provided by a multidisciplinary team. While

multidisciplinary education is available in some countries, in many others it is not

available and its value is not fully recognized by the medical profession.

    Primary Prevention of Diabetes

At present, type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented. The environmental triggers that

are thought to generate the process that results in the destruction of the bodys

insulin-producing cells are still under investigation. Type 2 diabetes, however, can

be prevented in many cases by maintaining a healthy weight and being physically

    active.

The International Diabetes Federation proposes a simple three step plan for the

prevention of type 2 diabetes in those at increased risk. IDF recommends that all

people at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes be identified through opportunistic

and self-screening. People at high risk can be easily identified through a simple

    49 | 110

questionnaire to assess risk factors such as age, waist circumference, family

history, cardiovascular history and gestational history.

Once identified, people at high risk of diabetes should have their plasma glucose

levels measured by a health professional to detect Impaired Fasting Glucose or

Impaired Glucose Tolerance, both of which indicate an increased risk of type 2

diabetes. Prevention efforts should target those at risk in order to delay or avoid

the onset of type 2 diabetes.

There is substantial evidence that achieving a healthy body weight and moderate

physical activity can help prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. In primary

prevention there is an important role for the diabetes educator to help people

understand the risks and set realistic goals to improve health. IDF recommends a

goal of at least 30 minutes of daily exercise, such as brisk walking, swimming,

cycling or dancing. Regular walking for at least 30 minutes per day, for example,

has been shown to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by 35-40%.

    WDD Lighting Guide

    OVERVIEW

In order to mark World Diabetes Day on 14 November, iconic buildings and sites

throughout the world will once again light in the blue colour of the circle symbol for

diabetes - the central component of the World Diabetes Day campaign logo. We

expect to exceed the number of iconic buildings and monuments that participated

in last years campaign. The landmark illuminations are testimony to the power of

our combined efforts to alter the diabetes landscape. They also provide, of course,

a strong visual element to attract attention to the diabetes cause.

The generation and use of images to attract media attention will be essential to

drive local and global coverage of this yearsWorld Diabetes Day campaign.

It will be important to ensure that the media are aware of all events in advance and

provided with the appropriate materials and resources to encourage them to cover

the story. To facilitate this process, we have developed Media Guidelines to help

promote your event/s to media and ensure consistent messaging at local, national

and global levels. Please see Media Guidelines for more information.

The information contained within this document covers the following key areas:

Section 1: Bring Diabetes to Light (How to Light in Blue)

    Section 2: Photography and Filming

    Section 3: Appendix - Materials

We hope that this document provides you with all the necessary materials to ensure

a successful event in your country. If you have any questions, please do not

hesitate to contact World Diabetes Day team members Lorenzo Piemonte -

[email protected] (+3225431624) (English or French) or Merry Rivas

    [email protected](Spanish).

Section 1 - Bring diabetes to light!

    The monument challenge

Last year, the global diabetes community rallied behind the third call to light iconic

landmarks and buildings in blue to mark World Diabetes Day. More than 1000 iconic

monuments were lit in 2009 as beacons of hope for the millions of peopleworldwide living with diabetes. A full list can be found in Section 3. This year, with

your help, we aim to illuminate more monuments and to strengthen the link

between the blue lightings and diabetes. Visitwww.worlddiabetesday.orgfor more

information and support material to help you light a monument near you.

    How to light in blue

Different buildings and monuments present different challenges for lighting. Below

you will find easy steps to assist you in requesting and organizing a lighting:

Step 1: Identify the iconic building or monument that you would like to light in

    blue.

Step 2: Identify the person who can grant permission to light the building or

monument and the person who is technically responsible for lightings.

Step 3: Tailor the draft letter provided here to suit your situation [see Appendix

    1.1].

Step 4: Provide the reasons why the building should light in blue to mark World

Diabetes Day [see Appendix]. Also add the list of buildings lighting confirmed for

    this year -http://www.worlddiabetesday.org/events/monument-challenge

Step 5: Send your lighting request to your chosen location and, if possible, follow

    up with a phone call.

Step 6: If your request is approved, ask for the technical specifications.

Step 7: Decide on the best way to light the monument some buildings may

already be lit for other occasions, while for others this may be the first time. To

make the colour blue may require changing bulbs or filters. You can also choose to

project the World Diabetes Day logo and key messages onto the monument. See

photos of buildings lit in 2008 and 2009 -

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/idf/sets/72157603772275638/

Step 8: Identify any costs Often monuments are able to light in blue for free.Sometimes, however, charges may be incurred. Regretfully, the World Diabetes

Day campaign does not have the resources to support your lighting financially.

Step 9: Capture print quality photos or a video of your lighting. We need to share

the images of your lighting immediately with the global media and the public. See

    Section 2.

In 2010, we want to strengthen the link between the lightings and diabetes by

encouraging the global diabetes community to use the blue lightings as the venue

for all World Diabetes Day-related grassroots activities and events. We ask to putparticular focus on activities promoting physical activity, with the aim of stimulating

participation, particularly of people with diabetes, and interactivity in order to

convey a positive and empowering message.

    SECTION 2 Photography and filming

    Photography

The monument lightings provide such a strong visual element to World Diabetes

Day that we are keen to collect and share images from as many of the illumination

events around the world as possible. The take up of these by the media will be

essential to drive coverage of the overall campaign.

Please arrange (if you havent already) for an experienced professionalphotographer to attend your building illumination and capture a print-quality shot.

Please consider that taking images in low light conditions at dusk or night can be

very challenging. Weather conditions can also affect the quality of your photos.

We will all benefit from sharing high quality and interesting images. To facilitate the

sharing of images among the global diabetes community, please upload your

photographs to the WDD Virtual Museum

(http://www.worlddiabetesday.org/museum). In addition, we will also use Flickr

(http://www.flickr.com) to collect all images of events related to World Diabetes

Day. For examples of images from last years campaign, visithttp://www.flickr.com/groups/wdd.

We welcome all photographic material. The photographs will be used on the World

Diabetes Day site, in web banners and the high-quality ones will be used in print.

Please make sure you own the copyrights for any material published. By uploading

and linking the photos, you allow IDF to use the material for its World Diabetes Day

awareness campaigns and make them freely available for IDF member associations

and aligned groups to use in non-commercial material.

If you have a Flickr account (free to register), upload your pictures in highresolution to your own account and add the pictures to the public group "World

Diabetes Day" (for more information, seehttp://www.flickr.com/help/groups/)

If you do not have a Flickr account, you will still be able to upload your images

through the World Diabetes Day website

(http://www.worlddiabetesday.org/photos). Images uploaded through the site will

be published on the IDF Flickr account (http://www.flickr.com/photos/idf/).

    Filming

In addition to sharing still photography with the media, we are keen to collect video

footage (10 min. maximum per video) of the top lightings around the globe, to help

    APPENDIX

1.1 Draft Letter to Monuments and BuildingsDear

I am writing to you on behalf of to

request your support and authorization to light up the City

Hall and/or other civic buildings in blue to mark World Diabetes Day on

    the evening of November 13.

Diabetes is a leading global cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke

and amputation. The number of people living with diabetes has increasedconsiderably over the past 30 years. In 1985, an estimated 30 million people

worldwide had diabetes. A little over a decade later, the figure had risen to over

150 million. Today, according to the International Diabetes Federation and World

Health Organization, the figure exceeds 300 million. Unless action is taken to

implement effective prevention and control programmes, it is predicted that the

total number of people with diabetes will reach 440 million by 2030.

World Diabetes Day is celebrated every year on November 14. It was created in

1991 by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and the World Health

Organization (WHO) in response to growing concerns about the escalating threat of

diabetes worldwide. In 2007, World Diabetes Day became an official United Nations

Day as a result of UN Resolution 61/225. The Resolution invites all member states

to participate in World Diabetes Day and draw attention to the need for education

and awareness to tackle the growing diabetes epidemic.

World Diabetes Day is a global event that unites millions of people in over 160countries to raise awareness of diabetes. Numerous local and national events are

organized by organizations and individuals with an interest in diabetes. In 2008 and

2009, the global diabetes community worked together with local champions to light

iconic landmarks and buildings in blue to mark World Diabetes Day around the

world. More than 1000 monuments were lit in blue in 2009. The full list of

    participating monuments is attached.

This year we hope to encourage more iconic buildings and monuments to light up

and would like to include your as one of the participating monuments.
