En 1871 una epidemia de fiebre amarilla provocó la huida de las familias acomodadas que vivían en el barrio, trasladándose hacia el norte de la Plaza de Mayo. Las casas quedaron vacías y fueron ocupadas por inmigrantes que alquilaban pequeñas habitaciones con baño y cocina compartida. Hoy, recorrer sus calles especialmente los días domingo cuando la feria se instala en Plaza Dorrego, es formar parte de una fiesta popular. Es imperioso atravesar el Mercado de San Telmo y así volver a los inicios del siglo XX cuando la historia del barrio empezó a escribirse.Estas son las razones por las cuales se explica la mística de San Telmo.

Este gran mer-cado bajo techo fue proyectado por el arquitecto Juan Antonio Buschiazzo en 1897, y luego de sucesivos cambios tiene hoy día, entrada, por la esquina de las

calles Bolivar y Carlos Calvo, a la que para 1930 se le agregaron dos brazos con salidas por las calles Defensa y Estados Unidos.Su estructura tiene techo de vigas

de hierro con vidrios. Su fachada es de estilo italianizante, y se alo-jan en su interior locales con venta de pescado, carne vacuna, pollo, cerdo; de verduras y frutas que se concentran en el cuerpo prin-cipal de planta rectangular hacia la calle Bolívar. Los anticuarios se concentran en las dos salidas hacia. Defensa y Bolivar. De esta manera, los antiguos puestos “del barrio” que habitan desde hace varias décadas conviven con los



anticuarios, más recientes y rela-cionados como el boom turístico de San Telmo. Este lugar lleno de historia ha sido declarado Monumento Histórico Nacional en 2001, y muy lejos de ser un museo como tantos otros, está vivo en muchos aspectos. Habiendo pasado por restaura-ciones y modificaciones en su estructura clásica, su gente se fue acostumbrando a la llegada de turistas y curiosos que conviven con los vecinos de siempre. Definitivamente este es un lugar adonde puede respirarse el es-píritu de lo que fue el Mercado para el barrio, más de un siglo de

historias y anécdotas que se trans-forman en una clara expresión artística y cultural.

At the beggining had just one ac-cess but today the structure allows the visitors to use the entrances at Defensa, Carlos Calvo, Estados Unidos and Bolivar strreets. The structure of the market was based on steel pillars with a semicircular glass roof to achieve the light of the day. Carrara marble was used for the indoor floors that helped to give an italian style to the building, that at that moment represented mo-dernity. You may find on Victorica Stroll,

after you cross the bridge next to

the railway station, an extended

variety of restaurants among

which is a must Villa Julia, a stately

house built in 1906 as a private

vacation french style residence,

that has the most reccomended

international cuisine.

At the end of the way, you must

visit Tigre’s Museum, another

outstanding building of 1912

and 1913, that nowadays

exhibit a wide list of national and

International artists.

Finally, where locals used to trade

their diary supplies, foodstuff,

and merchandise produced on

the islands today arises a new

Fruit market, where, you may find

also,clothes, food, plants, and

furniture made out of ticker or jute.
