Every year, the National Cherry Blossom Festival takes place in Washington, DC, as a three-week long celebration of the historically significant gift of 3,000 cherry blossom trees from Japan to the United States and the unity between the two countries. The festival includes more than 200 international cultural performances and over 90 other special events ranging from art shows to parades to kite flying competitions. The Peak Bloom Date during this celebration is the day on which 70%+ of the Yoshino cherry trees surrounding DC’s Tidal Basin are open. The exact date varies year-to-year depending on weather conditions, but is projected to begin this year on April 8, 2014.
