Heated suits have come and stayed so has ultra flexi materials, better insulation, better fit, built in hoods, built in gloves and all sorts of strange names for zips. But this year there is a real movement towards dealing with the fact that wetsuits, our second most important bit of kit, are actually very environmentally damaging. The trouble is we are a sport/ art form so dependent on petro chemical derivatives. We go against everything we stand for when it comes to environmental responsibility, on one hand we do everything we can to protect our world, on the other we ride and wear toxic materials that go some way to undo this good. To address this in the following pages you will find many wettie manufacturers have turned to different techniques from recycling material to whole new construction methods to try and address this. The most obvious way of sorting this out is not always making a suit from recyclable materials but one that will genuinely last more than a couple of seasons, and there is a real feeling that suits are starting to be made to last now, thus solving this problem. It’s obviously been a concern for the consumer that suits are made to last for just a season, after all what company doesn’t want us to part with our cash every winter. But now winter suits are there to keep you warm for multiple winters, and this is the most environmentally sound thing we can probably do for now. Of course having a suit that lasts for a couple of winters with recycled plastic or neoprene in it is a step better, then suits with extra warm wool linings take it a step further, but that basic principle of getting a suit that lasts is by far the most important thing any of us can do. With this in mind take care when purchasing a suit. Always try it on, or buy online from a manufacturer that you already know the sizes of. Buy a suit that suits your conditions, a suit for the north of Scotland is going to be different from one for the South West, so purchase wisely for comfort and warmth. Last winter was one of the coldest on record but it didn’t stop the waves from pumping up and down the coast. If you want to be sure of a warm session this winter then try one of our suits. We use the best neoprene we can find and ensure its thick enough for the February with an easterly. We’ve been working closely with top Scottish rider Mark Boyd, He’s been helping us to tweak the spec to get the suits just right. Remember – Surfers design and test the suits – If it doesn’t work we don’t use it!
