Water vapor is the most important gas for understanding !
Lets learn why we need to dedicate our lives to this fine gas
States of Matter
Sublimation – solid (ice) turns to water vapor.
Deposition – water vapor changes directly to ice.
Phase of State
freezing
How does this relate to the water cycle?
Evaporation
• The process of a liquid turning into a gas
• This requires heat and puts water in atmosphere
• Example: boiling water on a stove or the sun’s heat
Transpiration
• Transpiration is the process where water contained in liquid form in plants is converted to vapor and released to the atmosphere.
• The U.S. EPA estimates that an acre of corn transpires 4000 gallons of water each day.
• We sweat they can too• Greenhouses always steamy
Condensation
• The change from gas to liquid
• Produces the clouds in the atmosphere
• Example: clouds, sweat on pop can, breath in cold weather
Precipitation
• Product of condensation
• Water returning to earth in some state of matter
• Example: rain, snow, hail
What states of matter are seen with precipitation?
Ground Water• Water stored underground between soil and rocks• This water is in natural holding areas that can be
pumped for consumption• Water naturally enters the ground in areas with
grass or soil…..NOT CEMENT• Example: Aquifer, wells
Why is it so important to have forest preserves and other retension areas?
Run-off• Flow of precipitation
from the land to lakes and streams.
• Occurs when ground cannot hold anymore water or when rain goes into storm water storage.
• Example: when glaciers melt, reservoirs, flooding
How can all of this affect your life?
