OBJECTIVES

• To give information and elaboration on how the wastewater treatment process.

• To expose about the importance of wastewater treatment process

WASTEWATER??Figure 2 : Sample of sewerage

• “Used” water deposited into drains by domestic (residents and businesses )

• Down the sink or toilet and travels through underground pipes (sanitary sewer system)

• A mixture of domestic

sewage

1. CollectionFigure 1 : Sample of domestic sewerage

• Sewer system is completely gravity powered

• Sewer mains flow into progressively larger pipes until they reach the wastewater treatment plant.

2. Preliminary treatmentFigure 3 : Bar screen used in preliminary

treatment

• Bar screen to remove large solid objects (sticks and rags)

• Grit tank to allow sand, gravel, other material that not to be caught by the bar screen to settle to the bottom.

• Debris is disposed of at a sanitary landfill or recycled.

Figure 5 : primary sedimentation tank

primary settling tank and primary sedimentation tank :

• physical separation of solids and greases

• solid particles of organic material are removed

Page 9: Waste Water Treatment Process

4. Secondary treatmentFigure 6 : Aeration tank • Biological treatment

process

• Removes dissolved organic material and suspended organic solids

• In aeration tank

5. Tertier treatment / DisinfectionFigure 7 : UV Radiation Instrument

• Chlorine and ultraviolet disinfection are the most widely used

• Disinfection using chlorine to reduce pathogens.

• Exposing contaminated water to radiation from UV light

6. Discharged • Treated water discharged

• To the water stream

• Safe for rivers

• Safe for aquatic organisms
