During their first year at W&J, Washington Fellows will be invited to participate in the President’s Symposium led by Dr. Tori Haring-Smith, W&J’s 12th president. The topics for the symposium will vary from year to year but will involve contemporary as well as timeless issues like “Gender and Identity,” “Race in America,” and “Robots and the Question of What it Means to be Human.”

During their sophomore year, Washington Fellows will attend special networking events with alumni, members of W&J’s Board of Trustees, including Fortune 500 CEOs, successful entrepreneurs, international business people, and renowned physicians, lawyers, and educators. These experiences will allow Fellows to connect their classroom learning with future career aspirations.

Washington Fellows will cap their experience with a graduate-level honors thesis or project in their area of expertise under the careful guidance of an individual faculty member. Fellows will have access to funding that can be used to support their individual research activities or to defray expenses of presenting their work at regional, national, or international conferences.

Washington Fellows exemplify the mission and values of W&J. They are lifelong learners, responsible citizens, and prepared to contribute significantly to the world today. In addition, they embody the core values of W&J including integrity, honesty, respect, intellectual rigor, responsibility, diligence, and courage.

Students and parents will be able to attend one of the seminar experiences taught by W&J Faculty during this event.

Coming Out of The Cave What are the liberal arts? How does the W&J curriculum adhere to the ideals of the liberal arts while offering outstanding preparation for post-college life?

Graphing Your Social NetworkWith the popularity of social media websites like Twitter and Facebook, people rely more and more on their social networks for information, entertainment and commerce.

Old McDonald Had Some…Soybeans? — A Free Entry And Exit ExperimentThis seminar will use the basic market structure of perfect competition, which allows free entry and exit, to discuss the behavior and profitability of firms in both the short and long run.

Perkin’s Mauve: A Molecule That Changed The World Those who participate in this seminar will gain a better appreciation of the intersection between chemistry and our lives.

“Mad, Bad, and Dangerous To Know”: Coleridge, Byron, and The Siring of The Modern Vampire The vampire, a figure with a long past in most every culture, enters its modern incarnation in English literature at a critical moment in history.

Terrorism and Dictatorship in The MoviesHumankind has experienced all kinds of violence throughout history and there seems to be a fascination with telling and retelling these stories about tyrants and rebels.

The Basics of BehaviorWhat influences our behavior? How does behavior impact our everyday lives? Participants will consider such questions in this psychology seminar.

The Candy-Sharing Circle: A Case Study in Problem SolvingMathematical or logical puzzles often have solutions that are best discovered in groups. In this class, we will investigate the following question: Will the group reach a Tootsie-Roll Equilibrium?

The Washington Fellows is an honors program at Washington & Jefferson College (W&J) designed for exceptional students who are interested in challenging themselves in their years at W&J. This program is for outstanding students who desire a deep engagement in the liberal arts and sciences, both as ends in themselves and as engines of change in the world. Toward this end, Washington Fellows will be afforded unique opportunities to interact with distinguished faculty and alumni, visiting lecturers and dignitaries, the W&J senior administration, and the Board of Trustees throughout their time at the College.
