Our Vision

As staff we are proud and passionate about our students. We collaborate together respectfully and know that we are

making a difference. We enjoy the challenge of striving for excellence.

We develop partnerships and build pathways for our students into their community.

Our students are sure of who they are and take pride in their qualifications and achievements.

They confidently work towards their goals and create a future for themselves as hardworking contributors to and participants in

their community.

Our community acknowledges the worth of our students and actively welcomes them into their workplaces and social lives. The community

prospers from our students’ success and, in turn, our students are secure in their experience of belonging and acceptance.

Warnbro Community High School Education Support Centre is an Independent Public School for students from Years 8 to 13 with an intellectual disability. Our school is co-located with Warnbro Community High School at Swallowtail Parade.

Our focus is to offer an inclusive, innovative curriculum, where students are provided with an Individual Educational Plan catering to their specific needs.

An Opportunity

Parents as PartnersParents are the most important partners in our school. We strongly encourage the input, feedback and participation of parents in daily activities, celebratory moments, planning and reporting. We involve parents in developing and writing

individualised plans for students that incorporate their literacy and numeracy skills as well as their social, emotional and physical development. It is a priority for

our staff to maintain regular contact with parents about daily issues and the progress their child is making. We invite parents to attend our fortnightly Community Time where the whole school comes together to celebrate and acknowledge the work that each class is doing around the school. This opportunity is valuable for sharing experiences and recognising students’ efforts.

The school is committed to working with outside experts to support student learning. An example of this is a recent partnership involving Edith Cowen University where supervisory and trainee Speech and Language Therapists worked in the school two days per week. The project aimed to build teacher capacity in the area of Speech and Language

as well as support small groups and individual students in the development of speech and language skills. The school has an ongoing commitment to build partnerships with outside agencies and experts to ensure students individual needs are met.

Mathematics is a major focus for students in Year 8 and

Year 9. Students are provided with learning experiences

in Number, Algebra, Measurement and Geometry and

Statistics and Probability in line with the Australian

Curriculum. Students develop fluency with basic facts,

number sense and vocabulary and learn strategies to

help them solve a range of mathematical problems. Number

is a major focus as students learn about whole numbers,

decimals and fractions, and financial literacy. They investigate

the different measurement units, tools of measurement and

measuring strategies while also learning to tell the time on

digital and analogue clocks. In Statistics and Probability,

Developing students’ skills in Language, Literacy and Communication through enjoyable and engaging learning experiences is a fundamental focus. students learn to interpret basic information from charts, tables and graphs and investigate ways they can represent data. Students are explicitly taught a variety of strategies to solve mathematical problems which they can draw on to solve a range of problems.

Our school uses the First Steps in Mathematics resources to provide explicit teaching and engaging activities for

students. Mathematical problems are presented in real-life contexts and students are taught how, when and where to apply mathematical skills for everyday, functional purposes. We know that mathematics can enhance students’ ability to live independently and our school programs reflect that real-life application.

Our students participate in a comprehensive and intensive Protective Behaviours program from Year 8 to Year 13. The program includes independent life skills and personal safety which aims to strengthen the resilience of students and ensure their safety as they grow and develop. As students

reach the senior school years, they follow the Growing and Developing Healthy Relationships Program. Students also access health programs which target sex education, healthy eating and lifestyle education.

Inclusion forms a strong foundation of our pedagogy. Students are equal citizens of both Warnbro Community High School and Warnbro Community High School Education Support Centre. Students in Year 8 and Year 9 spend approximately 30% of their class time in integrated mainstream classes working alongside their mainstream peers. Students are supported by Education Assistants in

Option Classes while our year 8 and year 9 teachers work in partnership with the mainstream teachers to ensure equal access to the curriculum. Students participate in Health & Physical Education and access subjects such as Drama, Art, Dance, Information Technology, Materials and Food Technology on a rotational basis.

Transition from Primary School to Secondary School

The process includes:

Supporting our students’ journey through school to build

the confidence, skills and qualifications for a prosperous

life beyond school, is a process which begins in the

Primary years.

Our comprehensive transition process is designed to ensure

every child feels supported through a seamless transition

process from Primary into Secondary School. This involves

an intensive ten week program, where we ensure that we get

to know each child individually and students are provided

with opportunities to build relationships with their peers. Students participate in team building activities and get to know new staff as well as familiarise themselves with their new environment. They also have an opportunity to experience Mainstream Option Classes, and have a taster of the Enterprises run by senior students. Students also meet our Wellbeing Team encompassing our schools Psychologist, Youth Worker, Nurse and Chaplain. In addition, we liaise with primary school teachers to gather a broad range of information and establish links with families.

• Introductory parent information sessions

• School Open Morning

• Visits to schools by our staff

• Big Buddy/Little Buddy Mentoring program: Year 6/7 students participate in fun and engaging activities with Warnbro CHS ESC students. This is an opportunity to build relationships with students and staff to familiarise them with their new environment. The program culminates in a Morning Tea and presentation for parents.

• 10 week Transition program: Students attend once a week, more if required, to participate in a range of programs including team building and engaging activities.

• A barbeque for Year 7 students and parents.

Building Equitable Links in Enterprise and Vocational Education (Believe Program)

In Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 students participate in the BELIEVE

Program. Students choose from Industry Pathways to build their

qualifications and skills appropriate to their level and interests.

Their studies include vocational qualifications at a Certificate I

or II level, completed at school or through attending TAFE. We

offer a number of Industry Pathways that reflect community

and industry skill shortages which are in areas of interest for

our students. These pathways are at a level achievable for our

students and may include qualifications in Retail, Hospitality,

Automotive, Construction, Business and Community Services.

These vocational studies are integrated with School Curriculum and Standards Authority courses. Students also participate in Workplace Learning where time spent on the job ensures students build up the skills necessary to be competitive in the workplace and to gain and maintain meaningful employment once they have completed school.

This program caters for all students offering a range of the opportunities including: The formal graduation from Year 12 by completing WACE – Western Australian Certificate of Education alternatively the achievement of P-units or ASDAN qualifications.

Enterprise Learning Cycle

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT Planning Phase

In this phase students are involved in discussing and deciding on a project that they could be involved in. They identify the direction to take and

formulate outcomes in relation to a product, service or solution.

PRODUCTION Action Phase

This is the ‘doing’ part of the cycle. It involves students implementing a process to create and make a product, perform a service or event,

or actively participate in the resolution of a problem.

REFLECTION Evaluation & Improvement

This phase allows students to reflect and review their enterprise activity. They

determine successes and the direction of future activities. This phase informs both the beginning and end of the Enterprise Learning Cycle.

MARKETING Promotion Phase

This phase involves the students in designing, producing and implementing a marketing campaign to advertise or promote a product, service or solution.

Enterprise EducationIn Years 10, 11 and 12 the emphasis is on Education through Enterprise. Enterprise education is an approach to learning where students identify real-life projects through which they develop and demonstrate transferable enterprising attributes. It is about making learning real and exciting with a focus on the achievement of curriculum outcomes. The goal of enterprise education is to achieve a learning culture which will result in our students being motivated and equipped to identify, create, initiate and successfully manage personal, business, work and community opportunities. Through the use of enterprise education activities, students

achieve learning outcomes from a wide range of learning areas. The Enterprise approach is used across all industry areas as the method for an integrated approach to delivery and assessment of VET as well as School Curriculum and Standards Authority Programs. In this method, students engage in meaningful, hands-on activities and projects such as running a café where they make and sell coffees to staff, building functional and decorative construction projects around the school, building remote controlled cars and running a simulated office completing jobs for staff.

Workplace LearningIn their senior school years, students will be engaged in Workplace Learning which involves training and assessment in a real workplace, providing students with the opportunity to put their skills learnt at school into practice in their chosen industry. Students attend a variety of workplaces over the year and usually participate in one week blocks twice a term. This helps the students to gain confidence in the workplace, assists them in working within a team and understanding the parameters of each workplace. Students are supported in the workplace if and when required. Staff maintain contact with the students and their employers via telephone and daily on-site visits. Students maintain a logbook while in the workplace, that is completed by them and their employer. This logbook guides the student to record the tasks undertaken, skills learnt and employer contact details which will aid them in producing meaningful and successful resumes once back at school.

Students who attend Workplace Learning develop employability skills that are transferable to other aspects of their lives. These include skills in:

• Communication

• Teamwork

• Problem-Solving

• Self-Management

• Planning and Organising

• Technology

• Learning

• Initiative and Enterprise

An Individual Education Plan (IEP) in Year 8 and Year 9 and an Individual Transition Plan (ITP) in Years 10 to 13 recognise that students have highly individualised needs. An IEP/ITP allows for the prioritisation of the most important educational and vocational outcomes to help meet these needs. As such, the IEP/ITP may take into consideration the emotional, behavioural, physical and sensory needs of each student.

An IEP/ITP ensures the school provides an inclusive educational environment and program by facilitating appropriate classroom planning and the use of relevant educational strategies. This in turn, enables each student to achieve their educational potential. In addition, IEP/ITP provide a form of accountability for all people involved in

students’ education. The Principal and Deputy Principal are also closely involved in IEP/ITP accountability process.

Parents/Caregivers are invited to meet with the classroom teacher to share information and set priority goals for the student. These goals are measurable and able to be achieved within the semester.

Students’ progress towards IEP/ITP priorities is monitored, reviewed and reflected upon regularly as part of good classroom practice by teachers in the Education Support Centre. The student’s IEP/ITP is formally reviewed with parents/caregivers twice a year and students are issued with an end of semester report.

Transition Planning We believe in the abilities of our students and the process of individual discovery and action that enables a person to lead and improve their own life.

Through the ‘My Future My Life’ transition planning process, students are supported to envision their future and make choices about learning, work and life. Person Centred Planning and The Big Plan are used to enable students to

have a deeper understanding of themselves and of the

possibilities for the future. From this planning students’ are

supported to develop, implement, review and adapt action

strategies to enable learning, work and life choices. Students

are also supported to build networks, pathways and

community supports so that they are able to move beyond

school into fulfilling lives.
