Warm-Up 9/4/14• Make sure you picked up a periodic table
• Identify and highlight the six (including Carbon) elements that make up organic compounds.
• Carefully outline the Non-Metals section using
a black marker (hint: look at back cover of textbook)
• Secure the periodic table in your journal and add to your table of contents:
6. Periodic Table of Elements
Card Sort
• Sort your word cards into 3 groups.
Chemistry For LifeOrganic and Inorganic Compounds
Elements
• A substance consisting of a single type of atom. • It is pure.• It cannot be broken down into different kinds of
matter.• Are arranged on the periodic table• Elements make up molecules or compounds
REVIEW
The Periodic Table of Elements
Compounds• A substance formed from two or more
different elements that have chemically combined
• The elements lose their individual chemical properties and the compound has new properties.
• Cannot be easily separatedC12H22O11 NaCl
Table Sugar Table salt
REVIEW
Mixtures
• A substance consisting of two or more substances mixed together.
• Mixtures can usually be separated.
REVIEW
Card Sort
1. Put away your element and mixture cards2. Sort your remaining word cards into 2
groups.3. You must decide what “rule” you want to use
to sort your cards.
Organic Compounds• To understand life on Earth, you must first
understand organic compounds.
• Organic compounds contain carbon which can be bonded to hydrogen, sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen and/or phosphorus.
• There are millions of different organic compounds.
• There are organic compounds that make up your hair, your skin, even your fingernails.
• All life as we know it is made up of organic compounds.
Organic vs. Inorganic
In science, Organic can be a biological or chemical term.
• In Biology it means any thing that is living or has lived.
• In Chemistry, an Organic compound is one containing Carbon atoms. The opposite term is Inorganic.
Organic Requirements
Organic Compounds have the following properties:
1. MUST contain Carbon (C)2. Must have a C-H bond (carbon-hydrogen). 3. Carbon may also be combined with
Sulfur (S), Oxygen (O), Nitrogen (N), and/or Phosphorus (P) 4. Living or from something that was living

1. Should your “rule” be adjusted? Now separate your cards into organic and inorganic compounds
